He would have been playing for a team in a better position than he is now, but he would have more money. To me that is not bettering his career.

How do we know he would have been playing?

By going to Spurs and them choosing his loan club, has probably secured his minutes for the past two seasons.

He might have been on the bench most weeks here.

Of course he has bettered his career by leaving here for Spurs.

If you are good enough you will secure your own minutes

Or he might have been picked

He has bettered his bank account, not his career.

Do you think Phillips made a good career decision going to Spurs ?

I think it depends on if you think Philips would have played every game here if he stayed. Personally I dont think he would of so I think it would not a made a difference if he stayed or went as I think he'd played about the same number in the Championship here or away from here so it is irrelevent but because he will get a better exposure to the International Set up linked to a 'top' six side than being registered to a Championship side.

I don’t see much argument to suggest he’d have been better staying here, maybe you could argue it if he hadn’t been loaned and just played in the reserves but there’s no downsides to his move with plenty of benefits

You really think they wanted to go out and sign McFadzean and Batth?

He'd have played A LOT if he'd have stayed.

Spurs think so highly of him that they're playing an 18 year old CM at CB instead of him.

Do you think so? Possibly at the time with JDT in charge but Eustace wanted experienced players so one or both of the two players would still would of been signed.

Carter, Hyam then another experienced player would mean Phillips would have been third or fourth choice at best

He wasnt playing under JDT with Carter, Hyam and Wharton all ahead of him. Im not sure why that would have suddenly changed.

He has played loads at Championship level, an amount to which theres nothing to suggest he would have matched here. And on lots more money.

He was 17!

He played 14 times for us, they were clearly desperate to integrate him into the squad.

His transfer value has dropped since leaving Rovers. Greedy Spurs thought he was going to be a superstar so 2M was peanuts for them. They have mismanadged his career and i do believe he would  have been a better player now had he stayed with us. I don't blame him for going to Spurs but if you told him that he would end up at Plymouth or Stoke i'm not sure he would have gone.

Of course he would.

All about bank balance, despite what they say.

Did Tottenham really think he was going to be a ‘superstar’ or just another one of the dozens of teenagers those clubs hoover up for peanuts on the off chance an odd one actually is?

The rest of them? Just loan them out until they eventually get rid, no skin off their nose.

I dont get how it has dropped considering he has played loads of games and done well at Championship level.

He is still valued at around his release clause of 2M. Spurs had offered 3M until the release clause was magically leaked.

That article says Tottenham thought he was a ‘superstar’ over and above the dozens of other hoovered up teenagers, where?

Name one of the dozens  that Spurs payed 2Million for

Ah, so just your opinion then (also, I said dozens ‘those clubs’ hoover up, I.e the ‘Big 6’, as was, not just Tottenham on their own).

It was £2million, absolute peanuts for a Tottenham - the equivalent of us bringing in that O’Riordan for a negligible fee with the hope he also could make it at a higher level… he didn’t, young lads are a gamble, but it’s a low stakes one if a minuscule fee, so out on loan he goes too.

Off the top of my head, teenagers that Spurs signed for similar or more In the past 12 months

Archie Gray

Wilson Odaoert

Lucas Bergvall

Mason Melia

Yang

A quick google shows that large amounts were also spent on Veliz, Sarr, Udogie, Sessegnon, Jack Clarke, , all within the past 5 years, and limiting it to teenagers only
