I stand corrected. It seems local teenagers caused bother late in the evening back then with plenty of glasses smashed in the road. This time, with the Lancs & Yorks and White Bull shut, no bother there and the other landlords were very strict in keeping drinkers off the pavement. A well run event this time.

Edit:

I was told yesterday that louts from Burnley travelled to event in 2011 and caused trouble.

I guess they won't.

Apart from the Black Bull I am not sad to see the back of the recent pub closures on Station Road. The S(w)hite bull was a hole as was McKenzies. The Lancs and Yorks tried to have a go about 18 months ago but fell by the wayside because others do it better.......like the Withy Arms which when compared to it's old life as The Top House is a real success story*. Just a shame that the clowns at SR Council rejected their expansion plan thus making them put the money into the old Roebuck in Leyland.........and with it Ed their best chef.

*The Hunters seems to be of the same ilk as the Withy Arms but bigger. Real Ale, good food, yet still has a large bar area

There's no comparison between the Hunters and the Withy Arms.

The Hunters is tied to Thwaites selling 3 cask beers (Wainwright, a Thwaites seasonal bitter & Hunters Bitter) at £3.20/£3.10 and Carling is £3.40. All diners I have spoken to have said the food is not very good value and the portions not big enough.

The Withy Arms is a free house with 5 changing cask beers starting at £2.30. Quality food at decent prices.

You'll be glad to know that a good majority of those are now in jail for attacking a Wednesday fan in wheelchair, last report was a couple have been crying for mummy, the rest have stopped having showers as picking up the soap was becoming problematic :tu:

I can only go off my own visit MCMC1975

Their own ale was £2.80 and the 7 tapas dishes we had were excellent.

over the Withy it has a better outdoor area and a seperate bar. The withy is in no way better now they serve food till 8 (or is it 9 now?). It was far better when the food finished early and the kids left. As it is it's murder to get a seat just for a few pints. Pints may generally be £2.60-£2.80 (Withy ale @ £2.30 is a bad version of thwaites original seeing as it's supplied by them using dog end originals dregs) but it has lost it a bit in it's eagerness to take the food ££

We're well off topic here Shaun but I don't care ha ha...

Hunters Bitter is re-badged Thwaites (or should that be Marstons) at £3.10, that's 80p more than the Withy Arms version of the same thing.

Back on topic...

The same person told me at one coffin parade for Rovers, he saw Ronnie Clayton, Bryan Douglas, John Byrom and Fred Pickering sat at a table in the Withy Trees.

It certainly tasted better than Withy Arms Ale. But that might be psychological as I was told by the young lad running the Withy Arms that it was a mix of original and something else. And I despise Twatses Original

However I cannot recall the price being over £3 as I would have spat my teeth out. So we'll have to be to differ........however they did spend £500k on the place so I suspect it's trying to claw some back.

Still cheaper than Keswick ;)

I rather like Thwaites Orginal and Mild (Nutty Black) but it needs to be kept well; try the Nabs Head at Salmesbury which btw is run by a Rovers fan.

In fact Orginal has improved since Thwaites stopped brewing it; it has been brewed by Marstons for 18 months. Do Thwaites brew anything anymore?

I was talking to an ex-Matthew Brown bloke last night about this. We think that Marstons are brewing the lot now including 13 Guns and the rest of the craft stuff. Talk of a new brewery at Balderstone is pie in the sky. Wet led pubs in Blackburn continue to be closed. The business is fast becoming a hotel/restaurant group.

Tbh I haven't had any Twatses for a while as I've not been in The Cup or Station for a while and my pre-match visits to the Navvy are now in the past.

I think the last pint I had was Magic Sponge in Arnside.

Weren't Thwaites moving to a craft beer only operation at Mellor? They must be struggling to sell the land in the town centre. After all who wants to be in Blackburn??

"After all who wants to be in Blackburn"?

Aldi, Lidil, Primarni and lots of charity shops. No-one with much sense would want to invest in the Town unless it is the pack it high, sell it low brigade......unfortunately.

At least the bus station they've stopped building is on a par with that complete shithole they have in Preston :tu:

I remember the flashing neon lights advertising THWAITES A1 ALES where the t,h,w,t,e and s letters would go out to display the AI as A1.

One display was the ginnel (or snicket if you're from Yorkshire) from Lancaster Road up to the old bus station in Tithebarn St in Preston.

Who cares how North End get on? It won't get Rovers up the league.

Lived and worked in Preston all my life and they have had it rough. Good luck to them.

Talking of their chavvy nasty fans makes me laugh. Ever followed the Rovers away? It's not a PKE thing. It's a young chavvy knob head hands down trackies kind of thing.

Strange things happen with the crowd figures at weepdale as well it seems. Press guys handed the official attendance figures of c10,800 including 960 visitors, a bit later the crowd announced as 12.330.

Following in Burnleys footsteps the other week !
