Is there any possible alternative to letting people move near to whatever school they want and letting the market decide the value of the house? Gav clearly doesn't like the idea, but it's a personal thing.

Of course in the US they used to bus students to schools miles and miles away in order to desegregate them.

Hardly the same thing, but Clitheroe Grammar got students from Burnley, Blackburn, and everywhere in between when I was there.

You know what ultrablue, there was uproar initially when Feniscowles primary school started to bus Asian kids in to join the school, this uproar was started by parents that were not even brought up in the Fensicowles area. Some had moved in because the area was nice of course and free from Asians, disgusting, but thats another story.

Its a real pet hate of mine, you can probably tell, along with faking religion to get into a school :(

You like thousands of other have moved because of the school Tom, or at least thats one of the main reasons you moved to the area.

I've made my feelings known on the subject, its nothing persoanl, be it you or one of my best mates who decided he'd found the lord to get his kids in Wilfreds, its disgusting in my opinion.

As for me moving, has no bearing on this at all.

Why should people move house, if not to better their lot, or that of their family?

Why is it disgusting that someone has made a decision to better their lives?

People want to move to the better areas. I'm priced out of the area that was my first choice because the transport links are top class. Getting in a strop about it won't make the house prices there deflate.

Should we move on to parents moving into the more attractive postcodes so the kids can qualify for certain schools?

Absolutely disgusting, another example of poorer kids missing out, but at a working class level.

Don't be so silly GAV. All parents want to do their best for their kids. You are not a proper parent if you don't and if it means moving house or attending a church you do it. It's like the tigress who will go without food to feed her cubs. You are so red it becomes embarrassing.

The problem with Blackburn, the most racially segregated town in the country, in my opinion, is most of the decisions are made based on race, not based on where its nice to bring up your kids, although the 2 are linked for many people.

Just to add I'm not accusing Tom of making his decision based on race, but plenty do and its to the continued detriment of the town.

Of course it had a bearing. You did a poor Midlander out of a job.

Just to go back for a moment to the discussion we were having about intelligence being at least partly genetic.

Last night there was a programme on identical twins. It was clearly stated that scientific studies had concluded that 2/3rds of intelligence was inherited from parents. In fact exam results for identical twins were almost exactly the same.

Rubbish Al.

They copied off each other.

If you move because of the school its a disgrace in my opinion Tom.

If your child is good enough they'll thrive in whatever school they attend, its snobbery for the working classes, disgusting.

Probably but it will likely be a lot harder work for everyone concerned.

The 'tragedy of the commons'. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons. If everyone keeps claiming ther little bit as of right, sooner or later... Generalising, 'those that have' try to manipulate an advantage so that 'those that haven't' aren't ever in a position to claim their bit. Goes for every walk of modern life including education and our newly trumped 'British values'.

Just another aside. I expected the tone of these threads to be much more divisive than the mb but folk when they post over here appear a lot more accepting of different viewpoints. Or is it just me?

Yet you like footballers on 40k pw?? Thats 8 grand per day! How does that work?

btw I'm all for giving them a 50% pay rise abbey and doing away with expenses. Lets not forget they are only on a 5 year contract.

I think I was a little over the top on the quote you mentioned Mark, but it is a subject that gets me wound up and often these threads get closed down more than on the football side tbh.

Just on location/schools,

We looked at a place in West Midlands that was on a trainline to Brum (Our only criteria) just so happened to have the best school in the area if you believe the ofsted report, its full of people not born in area, no community spirit, its like a ghost town after 7pm, souless, we gave it a miss.

How can that be good for any community?

That's the tragedy, GAV.

They copied off each other.

I knew as soon as I had posted that I should have omitted the bit about twins exam results being similar. It gives doubters a way to twist the facts.

The scientific studies were not conducted specifically on twins, they were general for everybody and they concluded scientifically that 2/3rds of intelligence is inherited. Is that better?

Many people would kill for that peace and quiet.

So the Tories are now trying to stop workers from striking, or making it harder to fight for workers pay and conditions.

With a Tory imposed public sector pay freeze at 1%, MP's have been given a 10% pay increase on the back of that, people should be outraged, nurses, underground workers, whoever, should be allowed to strike without those posh Eton ****s getting involved.

Hurt the unions, you hurt the Labour party, we're all in this together, if you're a Tory.

Again you appear to have not bothered to read the reports, merely the headlines. The old school unions will still be allowed to strike, no problem there at all. The government are trying to make it that those concerned have to at least have a decent turn out at their ballots. No more of the 40% voted of which 75% said yes to strike action. Ridiculous that you can bring a service to its knees on the back of 40% turn out of which not even all agreed.

P.S. completely agree about the 10% payrises. Although it is being paid to ALL MP's. Hope the Labour ones are giving theirs away to charity. They're not? .. well I never.
