Jock Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 No it wasn't that game it was probably the last Manx cup game we played, think we drew 1-1. Police escort back to Burnley barracks and not even an attempt by that lot to have a pop despite the reputation they'd created in their own minds at places like York and Scarborough!! Got down near The Sparrowhawk, pub on the opposite corner with the idiots locked in the pub and the bin was launched through the window, they sh1t themselves, the police sh1t themselves also. Young and daft. Which match was it when Rovers fans kicked off in the Cricket Field Lego Stand? It was in the days when Dingles occupied that end. Didn't Dingles claim it was Man United fans helping Rovers fans? Because as we all know Bumley have never been done by anyone ever

Mike Graham Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 You are right about the roof it was 93. Wegerles last minute winner was sublimehttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mbjYXTo07aE&feature=youtu.be I was stewarding on both ocassions by the emergency ambulance entrance in the Darren/nuttall corner and there was a shopping trolley full of cans they couldn't take in the ground. Also Gray and Keys came in that way. Keys put some change on a charity bucket but Gray said he 'only had a £50 note'...tight cwunt Speedie hat trick https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dvjqU1GWD6E&feature=youtu.be Wonderful memories, 'twas at both games. How crap we are now compared to those wonderful times.
blueboy3333 Posted June 9, 2015 Author Posted June 9, 2015 http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/sport/football/rovers/news/13320016._/?ref=mac 2nd part of the Speedie story. He's right about teams needing players that run round like lunatics for 90 minutes. Hughes bought Savage to do that and it got the crowd and the team going...and Savage was a complete fanny compared to Speedie. It's amazing how few of those types of players there are these days. Every team had one 20/30 years ago. It's all about step-overs, diving and shyte refereeing these days.
Mattyblue Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 One of my all time favourite players, shows how far force of personality, with a bit of quality, of course, can take you. The Newcastle hat-trick, giving it some to the Geordies in the Darwen End after a week full of 'King Kev' claptrap, the hat-trick at Plymouth saving our bacon, the Derby play off goals, the Wembley foul etc etc. We talk about how the 2001 Promotion outfit would destroy our current bunch of soft sods, but the 1992 vintage wasn't half bad either- Moran, Hendry, Wright, Cowans, Super Atko, Wilcox, Sellars, Newell, Speedie. P.S. Wasn't the Rovers Return half time draw called the 'Speedie Return' at one point, or are my Rovers based dreams getting more off the wall?

Only one downer on the '93 clip - at the end of the match the dreadful 'The Final Countdown'. Who instigated that, Gerald Jackson, not very cutting edge - better Steve Barker or someone else?
Rover_Shaun Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Sounds like a Gerald-ism. Like Simply the Best, the boys are back in town (I now deteste that song) and the more modern and truly dreadful Wild Rover attempts

thenodrog Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 One of my all time favourite players, shows how far force of personality, with a bit of quality, of course, can take you. Mine too. He was already that when imo before we signed him and I couldn't believe it when we did! All the best players that I have ever seen actually play football as if they are enjoying it and Speedie obviously loved it. Might be an odd thing to say but I'm convinced playing football is not the favourite occupation of many professional players.

Might be an odd thing to say but I'm convinced playing football is not the favourite occupation of many professional players. I loved Speedie and his snarling passion. I was absolutely gutted when he left. My wife is Irish and we regularly listen to Speedie on RTE, talking about football. All time Rovers legend status in less than 12 months!
thenodrog Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Correct Leonard. he wouldn't buy a drink in my pub that's for sure.
Exiled in Toronto Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 That was brilliant, head butted someone in the wall and leathered the ball into the crowd when shown the red. Big following that night, first game was called of because of the weather or we'd have taken more He tried a back head butt while jostling in front of their wall. As that missed he turned round and did it properly. In that great 3-1 Newcastle video, as well as Wilcox studding the keeper, in the run up to the Newcastle goal there were three challenges that would've all got bookings today. It's like watching a completely different sport.
Mattyblue Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Indeed EiT, 1991/92 was in many ways the end of an era. The Premier League started in August 92', as did Sky coverage, the backpass law was brought in at the same time, Liverpool dropped away and Man Utd became dominant and terraces began to be knocked down at a rapid rate. Was it all for the better?
