[Archived] Suggested Message Board Reorganisation

Recommended Posts

Banning by committee? Whatever next? I think people are taking themselves and this mb too seriously.

It's a messageboard that's all. If people don't like what people are posting then ignore or leave! It's that simple.

What we should be looking at is not how we deal with offenders but how we react to offending.

Not a dig at you Stuart, but how many times have some posters been told to put people they don't agree with on ignore?.But keep having a tantrum with each other. Ok it can be hard when using the quote system when you see some posts.

Also people explain why they have made a decision, but some can't read or understand the reason and keep having a pop, and it spoils the topic. On a slightly different point someone can make a joke of someone but the person on the end of it takes it the wrong way and makes things worse.

On your second point I don't know. You have suggested a start from scratch, forgive and forget but how long did that last?

More often than not it's someone taking offence on someone else's behalf!

I often do forgive and forget - but that only applies to past misdemeanours.

It should never have got to that point.

I'll go back to the segregation suggestion. I'd guess that BlueboyZZZZ - the cause of many a problem on this mb - would not be in the same circles as Maj in real life. Stop feeding trolls and they will go away.

:D Oooh you are a wit with all those ZZZZ's.

Just so we're clear, I certainly wouldn't be in the same circles as a manchild that posts porn on an internet MB meant for people of all ages. You defended him too. How shameful. I'd wind yer neck in.

For anybody else wondering, i've just looked up the phrase 'Stop feeding the trolls' and it apparently means 'someone disagrees with me so i'm gonna put em on ignore cos i can't cope with someone disagreeing with me cos i'm a bit pompous and a bit of a coward like'. Who knew?

Oh and Maj/Big Fat Sam/Whoever, if you're reading this please don't threaten to sue me again via PM as it was Stuart who mentioned you in order to have a dig at me. I'm just defending myself. With friends like him eh?

Mods - i know you'll delete this but If people, well mainly Stufart (ooh how clever i changed his name, what japes) keep bringing it up, i'll keep defending myself. Feel free to ban me. I promise not to post porn as my last hurrah.

Laters haters xxxx

You are right BB, but your problem is that you aren't in the clique!!

The ignore facility should be withdrawn altogether. It's babyish and encourages sulking.

God knows I've disagreed with blueboy enough, and he has on occasion sanded my boobs (metaphorically), but if I was to get wound up enough about it to start a spat, then clearly I am taking this whole thing far too seriously. I wouldn't want to stop anyone having a view. Clearly, I'm always correct, but I'm willing to indulge people in their perpetual determination to get things utterly wrong :)

It's summer, the birds are singing, the sky is blue, the air is fresh and clear, holidays to look forward to, women wearing skimpy gear (not always a good thing I guess), why the hell would anyone want to glue themselves to a messageboard and indulge in a hate-fest?

That's out of order Stuart. I'd wager you know nothing about either poster. I spoke to maj via pm and I have to say he seemed a decent bloke. I've also spoken to Blueboy too and my opinion of him is the same. Neither gave me any reason to think one was intellectually or professionally superior than the other. They differ on football opinions but let's not presume one mixes in higher circles than the other. We've all got our faults as human beings. It's those who can't realise that.concept that are the real problem on this messageboard.

Edit

I should add, I'm not saying because I've spoken to both via pm that I know them. I have no idea about either of them. But that's kind of my point.

Your boobs are a delight. That we can agree on.

It's ironic that those that moan most about 'trolls' etc are the ones most willing to carry on the spats that are long forgotten.

You're right about the ignore function too. Bizarrely, those that encourage it's use continue to slag off the people they have on ignore. Wrong 'uns i tell thee.

I think there is a tendency to regard all disagreements as "spats" and to use the term "slagged off" indiscriminately. I recently got involved in an argument with Blueboy but I never resorted to any personal insults. I said things he didn't like but that is not the same thing.

Its one thing to have a "conversation" where 2 people end up calling each other names but another for posters to have a disagreement about matters of substance.

We are always going to have disagreements or we are in danger of watering down the MB to nothingness.

How we respond is the key.

Finally I hope we never go back to the modding we used to have where it was totally inconsistent, totally arbitrary and there was no accountability.

Stuart is right, use the ignore function.

If you're reading a post and it's making you angry as you read it, then you need a break from it all.

I wonder if composing an artfully-expressed critique of someone else's point of view, blending in some stylish insults gives people a hit fo dopamine?

Bit like facebook where if someone "likes" your post you get a hit of happy chemicals. Only here it's hatebook, and you keep on making the insults and the rebuttals more and more venomous until you get so angry you can't get any more happy chemicals and you've forgotten what the bloody hell the original point was, but all you know is you just wanna reach through the screen and stragulate the chicken sh|t out of some ass-hat who had the sheer front to disagree with you, and they wear support tights and smell of urine and you're so wound up now you can't express it ... gggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggggh!

And breathe.

It's not worth it.

In one sentence, you've appointed yourself judge and jury not only on Blueboy's contributions on the MB, but also on what you assume to be his social / financial / professional standing away from the internet.

Would you care to chuck in a "guess" on skin colour or sexuality while you're at it? We wouldn't want "those people" in the wrong "circles" would we?

You spend a lot of time lecturing everyone else on how to use the messageboard, respect opinions, put people on ignore, etc etc

Has it ever occurred to you that you are actually part of the problem, rather than the all-seeing oracle with the magic solution?

what you actually did was criticise a post/viewpoint of mine without directly quoting what i had said or addressing me directly. It was the 'look at what that idiot wrote' type post that was playing to the crowd. A few others stuck the boot in on the back of it. I find that kind of post a bit annoying and cowardly, you had no interest in a debate but just set out to try and score a few 'likes' off the ever-so predictable little clique. A bit like stuart did above. You then got a bit back and resorted to the 'i'm so offended i'm going to avoid this poster in future'. Then you mention me again now. What's the point? So take Stuart's advice and use the ignore function. You'd be doing us both a favour.

Can't help thinking we take ourselves too seriously!

I think this is a fair point.

I don't really think the nub of it is an issue with politeness or civility (though that is important symptom that needs to be addressed).

The issue is that if people log on and see a four pages highly personal slagging match between a number of (theoretical) adults about our manager or whatever it is just flat out depressing. It makes people not want to post out of embarrassment not fear.

Who wants to be associated with that?

If I walk into a pub and there are a bunch of people acting like idiots and bickering at the top of their voices leave. Not because Im scared but because it ruins the atmosphere.

No it's not. You've lost your wager, plus I know exactly what went on. Maj is more than just a 'decent bloke' and I'll defend him over an internet troll every day of the week - especially one whose trolling caused 'real life' problems for him. If Blueboy had been banned, as he should have been, before it escalated we'd still have a much better contributor on the board. Instead I expect he's still pissing himself and/or in denial.

(By the way, you only ever seem to reply to my posts these days to disagree with me, PV - as though you've made it your duty to police what I write).

Difference is though, Majiball reacted in one of the worst possible ways, you can't defend the indefensible, though he wasn't the only one at fault, he must be the only poster ever on here to post such things!

I seem to recall another poster afterwards saying 'I've met him at a few reserve games and my opinion of him has gone so low it's gone through the floor'.

Not defending what he did, and he knows what I think.

But the person who caused it is free to carry on trolling - and regularly does - with complete impunity. The only thing that can be done is to put him on ignore because the mods didn't and don't deal with him.

Internet troll blah blah blah. Trolling caused real-life problems? Stop making things up. It's pathetic. It wasn't just me who those pictures were aimed at so maybe there were others trolling him too. Maybe everybody was? Or nobody was. Maybe some people just disagreed on football. Oh yes that was it. FYI, he wanted to leave the board (he'd requested the mods close his account on a few occasions, the mods told me) and that was the way he decided to do it. A 'decent bloke' would just stop posting.

You didn't even see the pictures so you don't know what went on at all. They had to be described to you. You then addressed a half-hearted apology to ME. Now you're trying to re-write history. Carry on though, you're just making yourself look like a massive 'troll'.

Now stop referencing me in your posts. If you have anything to say PM me. If not, do one.

Stop it lads. 8 pages of trying to mend something that aint broke. I repeat that there is nothing wrong with this messageboard. Yes there are arguments and likes and dislikes but it's all part of life's rich pageant. Keeps things interesting and worth reading. It would be boring if we all agreed.

We don't always agree with Gordon or Jim but remember how bland it was when they weren't posting.

Leave well alone.

...and off he goes again. The person who caused it? Feck me, you're like a little schoolgirl. I've never even had a warning post, yet quite a few have been banned whilst i've been posting. I've either got naked pictures of all the mods or i've just not posted anything worth being banned for. You work it out you massive troll.

At least it is confined to a single thread now!

I draw the line at taking the p#$% out of people suffering from mental illnesses, disabilities, pornographic images etc. That is where I feel simply hitting ignore is not sufficient

To be fair the threads (generally speaking) have been a lot calmer over the last few days. Long may it continue.

That's the second time you've accused me of that Stuart. Considering I took an extended break from here I think perhaps you're being paranoid. I've got no agenda with you or anyone else. I thought you were one who was all for people disagreeing as long as it was discussed in a civil manner. Now you accuse me of what? Picking on you or singling you out? Either way you couldn't be further from the truth. As I told you before, I enjoy your posts. It's just on this occasion I felt you made sweeping statements about two members on here. Unless you know them personally (and very well) then your assumptions were misguided. As for any effect on Maj's real life, well I didn't make any comment about that. If he's suffered personally because of any activity on here then I feel for him. As I said, he seemed like a thoroughly decent bloke when I chatted to him. Nobody wants that for anyone on here. It was a point I argued about the treatment of chaddy. Nobody knows how constant criticism can affect people in the real world.
