The way I read the article was that Derby don't want promotion yet and are concerned about a repeat of the disaster the last time (?) they were in the Premier League. Clement on the other hand wanted a full on promotion push now. Nothing to do with recent form.

Personally I'd go for promtion and worry about relegation when you're back in the PL.

Interesting point that. I remember their manager at the time, saying they'd been promoted a year early, but they could hardly turn it down and they'd give it a right good go(or words to that effect). They didn't add much to the squad either.

What followed was the most embarassing season in decades.

Looks like they are still haunted by this. However, if you don't want to go up when you have the chance, what exactly is the point?

You cannot assume you'll have the same chance next season.

I'm looking forward to this with every goal he scores

Quite Tom. Reminds me of the old HT-FC World cartoon strip and "Jordan Rhodes would have scored that". I'm sure we can expect that every time one of our strikers miss for the next decade or so.

Reading their owner's comments he's clearly making them with no concerns or regard for potential FFP ramifications for his club. Having spent more than several Premier League clubs over the last 2 years under McClaren and Clement then he's either being very brave in thinking they won't be punished, or more likely he's done his homework and knows full well that the Football League can't or won't punish Derby if they fail to get promoted.

I expected as much. Those hoping cheaters like Middlesbrough and Derby get the book thrown at them if they fail this season are going to be very disappointed. There's no way the League have the wherewithal or interest in punishing 'good men' like Steve Gibson and Mel Morris for investing money into their local clubs. So if Derby fail this season it will be business as usual this summer with another 'big name' manager and another £15-20 million spend. And on we go whilst I have to listen to nonsense like they're able to spend like that because they get bigger gates than Rovers as though that comes close to covering that amount of spending.

Sounds like Neil Warnock is going to be taking over at Rotherham until the end of the season. Could be a very good move for them on a short term basis. Warnock will get them fighting for their lives and knows this division inside out.

I think Morris could have worded his thinking better, but I think the logic behind it is sound. Most clubs going up now are playing expansive, modern football. They all seem to be the ones that adapt best to Premier League as well. Swansea, Southampton and Watford being the best recent examples. Bournemouth too if they stay up.

In the long run, Derby have a better chance of establishing themselves in the Premier League if they can get that style of play embedded in the club. If they went up this year playing a different style, obviously next season would be just a scrap for survival, and therefore they'd have no chance of developing that style of play.

It's a long term view that will probably be rewarded if he selects the right coach.

Am I the only one who thinks the Derby owner's comments are a load of bunk?

So, what was the plan at the start of the season? Miss out on promotion but make it look good?

There was probably a falling out over transfers. Clement wanted more money to spend in January to get them over the line, and the chairman's twisting it into an ideological disagreement.

You cannot assume you'll have the same chance next season ever again.

Arrogance to think that you can chose when/if you get promoted.

Derby's most embarrassing season ever in the PL will make them millions and millions. Enough to help rebuild. It's actually arrogant to think that they should expect to be able to compete when/if they are promoted. You get there and you try your best.

If its true they're massively short changing the fans. All fans want to see their team do the best they can at that time. If it's get promoted then that's great. If it leads to a subsequent relegation then so what. You have to have the hopes and dreams to make it worthwhile

Wrong thread.
