[Archived] Transfer Talk Part 2

Well, they're multimillion pounds better off than us as result of being in the PL, they are in line for multimillion pound parachute payments for the next 3 years and they still have a good manager in place, all of which means they are in far better position than us to go up next year.

And they still don't have a player with half the skill of Cairney in the team. But my God they put in a shift!. Yeeeuukk!

I don't care who Shaw supports per se, I'm only interested in his suitability for the role/competence. Both of which I have doubts over to be fair.

Sort of see where your coming from with the skill of cairney, but when did "putting a shift in" become a stick to beat a player with?

If Rhodes and/or Rudy are sold this summer and we're still embargo'ed, then f**k it.... why not? What's the alternative? Brownie?

I think Best has probably burnt his bridges for good, though, and lord only knows what clauses he has written into his contract.

Anything is better than Lukey and Brownie.

What does Shaw have to do with the Rovers talk thread?

Maybe because he is the Chairman? :)

When it became a substitute for skill.

Previous transfer talk thread went way off topic so was locked.

Please keep this one on topic.

Threads go off on a tangent all the time. When there is some transfer news to talk about it'll soon jump back so don't worry your little blue cotton socks.

Yep, when there is transfer talk put in here. Simple enough so even you can grasp it.

blueboy, you've taken more threads off topic than most people have posted!

I know what you're saying, but with little or no transfer talk its good to have some debate at least? even if its in this thread?

Bet you preferred Roy wegerle to Alan shearer..

Don't be silly. Wegerle was good to watch but Alan Shearer had it all. Skill, speed and strength. Pity that injuries cut down his speed later on.

There can be no logical reason to sell Cairney to a Championship rival that finished well below us in the league last season and is going to be a direct competitor this season, whilst under a transfer embargo.

My observation, having watched every game Cairney has played for Rovers, is that he is by some distance the most technically gifted player at the club. Other than Marshall he is the only player we have who can 'make things happen' - get forward with the ball at his feet, shoot from in and around the area, take people on. Its painful enough at times with a central midfield devoid of any creativity, at least when the ball comes to Cairney I expect something to happen.

Those who would like to see him sold under some notion that it 'might' see the embargo lifted need to explain who on earth we have or could bring in to fill that void were he to leave. We are short on creativity and flair as it is. It is extremely difficult, almost impossible, to significantly strengthen the squad. The very least we should ensure is achieved from this summer is to retain or better players.

We also need to wonder why Fulham, a side claiming to want promotion next season, would see fit to make him one of their top targets and spend several million pounds on him if he isn't good enough for our team.

I've heard suggestions that Cairney might be a worthwhile sacrifice to make if it helps us to keep Rhodes and Gestede. Again that cannot be the policy.

If we need money we should go back to Watford and accept their bid for Gestede. Get that issue over and done with and take the money. All it takes is for a Premier League club to pick up the phone on 29th August and offer £7 million for Gestede and he's a goner. Whether we sell other players or not. Selling the likes of Cairney in some attempt to strengthen our position re. Gestede would be futile.

The day we allow our best players to join direct rivals is the day we wave the white flag in this division. Up until now, whatever you think about Venkys/Bowyer/Shaw, we have assembled a good squad and have kept the best players out of other clubs' reaches. Fair enough if a Premier League club comes in, but you don't ever sell your best players to Championship rivals. When you do you go from one of the top end clubs in this league, which I believe we still currently are, to a bottom end club in this league.

Matter of opinion. Admittedly Ings and Trippier have now left so we wait to see who comes in but there's still some ability within this team - after all more or less this squad walked out of this league just a season ago.

Good question. Yep all our players work hard, every game, it is the absolute minimum expected by the manager. There was once a popular football cliché, seems to have diminished in use, it was 'you have to earn the right to play'. A player who immediately come to mind linked to you who for me was not only exceptionally gifted as a player but who every game put in a shift and 'earned the right to play' was Shearer.

So I guess the original posters aim was to condemn us with scant praise - personally I take it as a compliment and walk off every game at least knowing the players gave what they had. They well have come up short but that was never as a result of lack of effort.

Very true - and there were many times last season when I felt our players had not given their all.

The other side of that coin is that other clubs are only ever going to be interested in our better players so it's inevitable that there will be interest and speculation.

But you are right in what you say. There is no point in selling our best players to get out of the embargo, and certainly not in the Summer. Even from a business perspective.

If we sell now then we are out of embargo in January (when everyone pays a premium for players). If we sell our best players in January then we can command premium rate for our outgoings and plan a complete overhaul in the Summer. To sell players now would be nothing short of stupidity.

Obviously this is predicated by Venkys continuing to fund our losses for a further season or so - because if they aren't, well it's game over anyway.

Pre taking over at Ewood my dad chatted to Shaw a few times whilst fishing down t'Ribble. Amiable chap and all that, but 'he's no John Williams'.

And isn't that the issue? We were used to the best, Chief Execs, MDs, managers that squeezed out every bit of value, that existed to win football matches and make the club the very best it could be.

We are now a much reduced shell of a club with poor leadership at every level it brings home what we have lost.

Very good! I guess he is more Dan Quayle.

It is so blindingly, frustratingly obvious to anyone outside a district in Maharashtra (or Portmeirion) that you need skilled people in key posts.

If you decide to leave Frank Spencer in charge of your best china, well buy a sweeping brush and prepare to lose a lot of money. If your heart surgeon is Benny Hawkins, say goodbye to your nearest and dearest.

If it is so obvious, why is it that they always under recruit for all the key posts in Blackburn Rovers? People wonder why conspiracy theorists abound...
