I wonder if we could get Quinn in on a free?

Former Hull midfielder

Or even Tunnicliffe as part of the deal?

Quinn has been offered a new deal at Hull and is also being pursued by Reading. He's the type of replacement we need but won't get.

I expect Cairney's 'replacement' to be one of either Paul Taylor or Chris Taylor. How exciting.

We would have six and we would need an absolute bare minimum of eight going into the season to give us some options and back up in the event of injury. Of those mentioned the manager has already identified two - Lowe and Marshall - as in his plans for defensive cover if we get injuries there (another area we aren't exactly blessed with strength in numbers).

O'Sullivan is a good prospect but has played 2-3 senior games in the Championship. It is too early to be relying on him as a first team regular starter. Same applies to Lenighan who even if he signs on is untried at this level or in midfield.

That would then leave us with five proven midfield players. One of which is still recovering from an injury that kept him out of almost all of last season.

So I'm looking at things with a great deal of concern. Given our shocking injury record over the last two seasons it would be pure suicide to think we can make do with what we have already got at the club, and given the loans we brought in last season (Taylor & Spearing) I have little to no faith of attracting some high calibre players to fill in on a temporary basis.

We need one or two as it is following the departures of King, Taylor (x2) and Spearing. Lose Cairney as well and we are well short of what we need.

I genuinely believe that if we lose Cairney and one or both of Rhodes/Gestede then we will be in a relegation scrap next season.

Can you name me another player at the club with the same technical ability as him? I can't. You're also overlooking the season before this where he was our standout performer.

Look at the goals he scored against Cardiff/Norwich earlier in the season and that is what he can bring to the team. Only Marshall is capable of doing the same.

Is it our plan to rid ourselves of any attacking midfield player we've got?

You waste your breath pal. They would much rather have somebody who runs about a lot and achieves FA a la Luke Varney. The average Rovers supporter has lost the ability to appreciate skill.

Looks like Cairney has gone to Fulham according Alan Nixon.

Fee not even 3.5 million according to Alan Nixon.

Shocked and Angry by this tbh

Has this actually been confirmed by a reputable source?

Bit torn on this one. The only member of the current playing staff with an ounce of creativity, but on the other hand he had an extremely poor season last season imo and judged purely on that form we're having Fulham's pants down at 3.5m or anything around that figure.

Maybe he will flourish under a manager who encourages him to express his creativity and doesn't stick him out on the wing. On the other hand maybe he'll only perform a handful of times for Fulham as well and be tweeting in early to mid September about needing a break to "recharge the batteries".

Of greater concern is that GB clearly doesn't like risking players with any flair in the middle of the park, Rochina, Dunn, Cairney etc which is a primary reason why we'll never progress with him in charge imo.

I would imagine the fee would be undisclosed so Nixon can say it is whatever he wants - he would never say we have got a really good deal because he doesn't like us.

Nixon has said He doesnt understand why Rovers have sold him. Rate Cairney highly actually.

I had Cairney on my shirt last season - maybe I will go for Williamson this time - see if it has the same effect :tu:

This reminds me that Williamson might be our best Centre Midfielder next season........

or 'they' would like a player with ability who gives their all for Rovers. I like Cairney, he's a talented footballer, but there were times last season that he didn't look interested and was walking round the pitch staring at the ground like a sulky teenager. Is that what you want from a Rovers player Al?

To be fair it doesn't really help at all when our manager is completely devoid of enthusiasm.

I'm not particularly surprised by Cairney moving as we have always been a selling club and we have always had a blue print of buying cheap with the aim of selling for many times more. Unfortunately for us this deal represents the clubs current standing that one of our better players is actually only worth £3-4m rather than when the same blue print 3-7 years ago meant we were selling players like Bentley, N'Zonzi for much healthier profits. The transfer embargo means we are a sitting duck and I'm under no illusions that we aren't currently whoring a good few players out to the highest bidders, the owners have got us into this mess and we are the ones who now have to carry the embarrassment of nearly relegated Fulham of the same league as us looking a far better place to be. I'm not happy about it in any way shape or form but selling Cairney for a profit like Rhodes and Gestede was always the plan it just so happens that the embargo kindly doesn't allow us to replace them with any sort of equal quality and we can be taken for a ride over their prices. We have to sell to stand any chance of getting out of the embargo as we aren't exactly going to be making more cash through season tickets and walk ons.

Cairney is certainly a flare player.. he turns it on with some silky skills and the odd rabona when the game falls kindly in his favour but at times he can also be left wanting. That sort of money for a player who was not the bread and butter of our side is probably worth snapping up. Not the end of the world, although for the younger of the fan base it might feel like it. I'm interested to see where this transfer window leads from now as I'd rather we get rid of whoever is going to leave early on and have time to rebuild from there.

That's just not true. You make things up to suit your agenda. There is now no (nil) skill left in the whole squad. Thanks a lot Bowyer. You just screwed up the whole of next season.

I understand and agree with most of what you say.

But we are not unique. Every club in this division is a 'selling club'. No player is off limits and is available at the right price if a bigger club e.g. Premier League club comes in.

If Cairney was moving to a Watford or even Bournemouth he would go with my blessing and I would have no problem with the club for letting him go.

But as you say, we're talking about Fulham. Championship Fulham. Fulham who spent all last season miles behind us in the league fighting relegation. What on earth can they offer that we can't? They aren't a bigger club than us, and are allegedly bound by the same rules as us (though im not convinced)

The fact we are under the embargo and can't replace them basically eradicates any of the benefits of selling him at a profit. He can't be replaced. So even if we sold him for £20 million none of that money can go back into the team to improve us. So what's the point?

We are playing a dangerous game here. Offloading our assets to rivals ends up the majority of the time in on the pitch failure. This is the first time since the days of 2013 that I am worried about League One.

Keep this up and League 1 will soon be an ambition.

who knows maybe selling cairney and gestede for a combined for £10 million may get us out of the embargo and enable us to keep Rhodes....

Nope. It won't.

Whatever fee we're getting for Cairney won't come close to sorting out our losses. Even if it did, our accounts have already been submitted for the summer and our next chance at escaping the embargo will be in November ahead of the January window.

The more likely outcome now is for Gestede/Rhodes/Marshall to look at this - see a good player being sold to Fulham and wonder what the hell is going on and probably push for moves themselves.

Never mind, we're keeping the 'grafters' Willo and Lowe, who between them never get past the half way line, never score and don't know the meaning of getting forward. At least we're rid of that pesky Cairney, who actually gets forward and wants to make things happen with the ball at his feet.
