Beaten by PKE. Another line of thanks on the Venky statue.

Maybe he wanted assurances that he would not be played everywhere bar his natural position?

Or the better he plays the less likely he'd be dropped (a revolutionary idea I know!)

Combine with tribunal money for King and possible Dann money and its going to get more and more difficult for Rovers/Football League to keep convincing people we should be under an embargo.

From the link:

Varney yesterday said he turned down the chance to stay at Rovers, before his release was confirmed, in order to win a permanent deal at Ipswich Town.

“There were discussions going on with Blackburn,” Varney told BBC Radio Suffolk. “I think they were going to offer me something but I made it clear to the manager I wasn’t going to return even if they were to offer me any sort of wage.

“I still would have stuck with Ipswich because I’ve enjoyed my time here and am desperate to get back playing."

I'd love to say it's baffling that Bowyer was looking to offer Varney a new deal but let's be honest, it's really not. The fact that plodders like him get offered new deals whilst our more talented players are allowed to leave is ridiculous.

The interesting bit for me - "I think they were going to offer me something" - not "there was a deal on the table". Being realistic - he is going to be out for a while yet - so with only 24 permissable players I doubt they would have taken up one of those slots on a player he would be injured or gaining fitness for a large part of the upcoming season

I just wonder why discussions were even ongoing. He should have been told in no uncertain terms he had no future here.

Josh McEachran has sign for Brentford for his £500k.

He would have been good replacement for Cairney but sadly we cant spend money.

Makes that whole "selling Cairney" thing seem not such a good idea, huh?

Exactly. I'm not sure how £2-3 million for any player can represent good business if not a penny can be reinvested back into the squad.

If it's been used to get rid of best then in a way it has gone back into the squad - the bad attitude and influence being removed can only be good

It's not about good business, we are under a transfer embargo. If we want to get out of it we have to sell players, that's the top and bottom of it.

Personally i think the quicker we sell players the better. The longer the embargo drags on then the worse the quality of the squad will become and then we are only heading one way.

Not nearly as good as still having Cairney.

I thought bowyer said he hoped to have some new signings by this Monday?

Time is running out...

Why does he put time scales to things he can't promise?

Ah well... Fingers crossed something happens over the weekend.

So how come nobody else in this league has had to sell players to comply?

The way to do it is to keep the important players and phase out the big earners like Best and Robinson. Not sell the important first team regulars to the likes of Fulham.

We can have a small squad, as we have now, with the likes of Cairney being very good players to have. Now we've got a small squad without one of our most able players and are worryingly short on attacking options with no chance of bringing in an adequate replacement.

Replacing him is a problem that we didn't need this summer. We've enough to worry about with Gestede.

There is not even real rumours. Maguire has been mentioned more than once but nothing in few previous days. Maybe the trialists can be decided after tomorrow's match.

At least the pay-off for Best seems to have put a stop to the rumours that Venkys have had enough of funding the club and are looking for an exit.

If they were looking to do this then stumping up more than a million quid to get shut of Best now doesn't make any sense.

The only positive from the Cairney sale is that a big chunk of the money has gone straight back into the club to rid us of Best and his salary, and not into the owners pockets.

Because other teams are within the levels of accepted loss, we are not being picked on. The rules are black and white.

We lost between £35 and £40 million last year and if my memory serves me correct it's down to about £25 million in the last accounts. That cannot be reduced to the required level by selling fringe players. The wage bill needs dramatically reducing.

The only way out of this sorry mess and rid of the vile imbeciles from Pune is probably administration.

Just selling Gestede for £6 million will not get us out of the embargo. Before we even think about replacements we need to be in a position to be able to pay for them. The loans and freebies trick will only work for so long.

Other clubs broke the rules. That is in black and white. Middlesbrough lost £20 million last year. Brighton and Bolton were two others who lost more than the permissible £8 million. I want to know why the Football League have used their discretion to decide not to punish any of those. Check their published accounts if you don't believe me.

Could you tell me how Bolton managed to go from £40 million losses to compliance in the space of 12 months without selling anyone?

If they could do it surely so can we?

The last accounts showed an actual loss of £26 million which included numerous multi-million pound pay offs to the likes of Etuhu and Campbell. So take those out and we're probably nearer to £20 million. Factor in the drastic fall in the wage bill and I can't see us being far away from where we need to be.

Selling your better players whilst under an embargo will only end one way. I'd prefer to remain in the Championship under an embargo for a few years and keep our better players than risk League One so that we can spend a bit of money next summer.

Well income from parachutes payments halved so I would say that the loss with probably be around £20-25m again this year when the accounts are released. The reason we are being picked on is that it is only after being put under an embargo are we trying to do anything about it! Other clubs have been doing it for some time to get nearer to compliance. Also we will have lost around £85m in 3 seasons with parachute money, preventing that sort of situation is exactly why ffp has been introduced and i'm not sure why we are all complaining when we only have ourselves to blame.

We should have done the payoffs in year 1 of relegation, got back to an even keel and then pushed on in year 2 for promotion but sadly we didn't and we are likely to be a league 1 team this time next year or the year after as we will only have an income of around £8m, if we are allowed to make a £5m loss each year that will give us a budget of £13m, so pretty much anyone in our squad who is earning more than £6k per week needs to be sold/released this summer.

We should be looking at a squad of lets say 24 players, at £5k a week plus all of the other bits and pieces you have to pay that is £6m in wages plus national insurance etc and bonuses that comes to £8m or our total income. Let's now look the academy which is £2-3m to run, maintenance of ewood which is around £500k per year, other staff let's say £1.5m and I have already spend our budget before we get into transfers from other years we are paying for etc. So I think we can safely say we'll be under the embargo for the considerable future and even if it is lifted in time for next summer it does not matter because we won't be able to match the embargo rules packages to players anyway
