Retention of our playing assets kept me.

Showing a determination to keep our better players out of other clubs reaches, demonstrated last summer with the rejection of a huge bid for Rhodes, meant that whatever people felt about the manager the club at least meant business from a playing staff point of view and weren't going to cash in on their best players.

The Cairney sale has changed all that. Sell any more, combined with the embargo, it will only end one way.

That's why my belief has been to keep the embargo and keep our good squad. Not decimate the squad to try and get out the embargo, by which time (January or June 2016) it might well be too late to arrest the decline.

You make some good points but I would assume that with the relaxation in the rules we'd be out of embargo in 12 months time, especially if Gestede is sold.

I think the loss of both Rhodes and Gestede would leave us in critical trouble given the fact that goals win games and our lack of alternative options up top. I don't believe the loss of any other individual players will be that critical or it shouldn't be on last season's evidence. It's up to the manager and scouting staff to roll up their sleeves get on with it and stop bleating about FFP as they knew it was coming.

Nice to see you've beentaking note mustard. :rover: Also that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery "I had the foresight". Pity you left it so long to develop that foresight though. :tu:

Haha well if it's going to be all about you then it may as well be about me even for a post or two :D

Well, I wasn't particularly pleased with the Bowyer appointment at the time (but it could have been worse). I then completely lost faith perhaps halfway into his first full season. Called for his head ever since. I meant the foresight to get rid before the embargo as opposed to hoping Bowyer would 'come good'. I'd rather we do everything we can to salvage the wreck than just resign ourselves to our (likely bleak) fate.

Oh for the halcyon days of the Walker Trust when we fought tooth and nail to hang on to our prize assets like Sutton,Duff, Bentley, Roque Santa Cruz etc. and wouldn't dream of cashing in.

Oh err hang on......

They were sold for significant profit and similar sales (Shearer, Berg, Le Saux) had already been initiated under Jack Walker himself "Blackburn Rovers is a business and must be run as such", whereas the transfers out by Kean (with the exception of Phil Jones) were done for a very different reasons.

Gary Gardner on loan?

would be a very good loan signing

Daily Mail is reporting that Brighton have put a 1.5 mil bid in for Marshall

by getting out of the embargo we can sign the next Cairney/whoever and continue to be the trading club that we've always been. Staying in the embargo will mean we can sign no-one of any real quality and the ones that are left will leave the club on frees when their contracts run out. Then we really will be screwed..and possibly still under an embargo. Selling Cairney does not automatically translate to playing League 1 football next season, he wasn't even very effective last season.

We have to sell a select few to get out of the embargo but it's a fine line. Sell too many of our better players and i agree we are screwed, but sell a couple and we might just get out of the embargo in time to attract other quality players before the ones we have now leave for nowt. Personally i'd sell Rudy as he has said he wants to leave and we will receive a good fee for him.

While we're restricted to frees and paying under £10k pw we're in the Brown, Varney, Songo'o, league 1 trialist's world of football. Get the embargo lifted and we're back to paying £ for the likes of Duffy, Conway, Rudy, Cairney and Marshall.

Also someone on Twitter has tweeted they have seen Rhodes playing golf... Waking on his injured ankle with no problems...

Now he's for it. Athlete, Rover shaun, abbey etc will be jostling each other aside to take the rip out of him! ^_^

Until you look at the maximum figure of debt that were allowed to show on the books, which for 2015-2016 accounts is a 15m loss.

So I am guessing cairney was sold as his was the only offer on the table at the time before the books must have been closed, which i believe is 30th June. Hopefully the management team and accountants will have looked into "impairment" and put some of the players contract valuations into that, but when last i saw it mentioned our debt was just shy of £80m according to the BBC six months ago (approx £57m of which is an interest free loan from Venkys - but still a debt).

I think the highest amount currently shelved under impairment by any club that the FA has allowed was approx £20m, that leaves is a further £45m to shave off the books to get below the 15m radar - and thats at LAST years loss figures.... going to take quite a few sales then, granted tv money should be up from the cup run, some money back from fonzi and king, but i doubt where going to make serious inroads into that sort of level of debt....

Eh? Have I missed something? I thought FUP was all about losses, not debt. If they're changing it to debt, we frankly aren't ever coming out of the embargo for the rest of our (presumably short) existence, so surely it's not the case.

you're right it is losses, not debt. The question is how much our losses will be in 14/15? The wage bill will have gone down from 13/14 but by how much is anybody's guess.

Even before Gestede goes, losing Cairney and Marshall would be a bad window.

We need to add to our midfield, not decimate it.

Wonder if Bowyer will have a say in this one.

We already have a ready made alternative to Marshall in C. Taylor who would be far more effective over the course of a 46 game season imo.

Do you sit directly behind one of those girders on the Riverside or something?

I hope Gestede stays.

Gardner is available on loan or sale.

Chris Taylor is not the same type of player as Ben Marshall. Rovers will never sell him to a rival as GB rates Marshall highly despite him being a prick sometimes. GB choosed between Marshall and Cairney for the free role and you see whos his favourite. ;)

Chris Taylor is only at Rovers to compete on a central mid role and at right wing. Good squad player.

I think Maguire would be Kings replacement and IF Gestede goes Maynard may come. Furman will get deal too. The other trialists unsure.

The cretin Shaw has a certain eye on him at the moment.

Gestede cost £100.000. One of the best buys in rovers history if sold for £7m.

Furman did play in championship season 13/14 with Doncaster. Full South Africa international. Only 27. Hard to find better midfelders and captain material who also can score on a free. Good scouting work there.

Gardner being Craig Gardner? If only. He's exactly what our midfield needs, good engine on him and he can't half strike a ball. Him and furman would be a class pairing in centre midfield, I think furman looks pretty decent. You know for a fact Lowe will be starting in centre midfield first game of the season though.

A bit from left field but I think we should approach Celtic to loan Tom Rogic. Fellow Aussies will know the potential this guy has and I think he would be the perfect replacement for Cairney. I would go as far as to say he is more skillful than Cairney. Here's an article from the 30th of April this year about his return from a lengthy injury.
