by getting out of the embargo we can sign the next Cairney/whoever and continue to be the trading club that we've always been. Staying in the embargo will mean we can sign no-one of any real quality and the ones that are left will leave the club on frees when their contracts run out. Then we really will be screwed..and possibly still under an embargo. Selling Cairney does not automatically translate to playing League 1 football next season, he wasn't even very effective last season.

We have to sell a select few to get out of the embargo but it's a fine line. Sell too many of our better players and i agree we are screwed, but sell a couple and we might just get out of the embargo in time to attract other quality players before the ones we have now leave for nowt. Personally i'd sell Rudy as he has said he wants to leave and we will receive a good fee for him.

While we're restricted to frees and paying under £10k pw we're in the Brown, Varney, Songo'o, league 1 trialist's world of football. Get the embargo lifted and we're back to paying £ for the likes of Duffy, Conway, Rudy, Cairney and Marshall.

I accept your business plan if our better players are being poached by Premier League clubs. I'm not daft enough to believe we can continue to fight off Premier League interest year after year as a mid-table Championship club. For that reason if a Watford or West Brom or whoever else from the top division seriously wanted a Gestede or Rhodes or Marshall I would have no complaints with a sale being agreed, provided the price was good value for BRFC.

That's where we are at. As a Championship club we will always be susceptible to being preyed upon by those who can offer Premier League football.

However, I cannot accept that we should be selling our assets to the likes of Fulham or Brighton. They are not bigger than us. They are not better than us. Selling our assets to them will only result in one thing - deterioration in results and league position.

To overcome the embargo problem we should have been tying our best players down to good contracts. We should be using the money saved on King and Best to offer Gestede significantly improved terms to try and tempt him to stay, and if the reason for Cairney's departure to Fulham was wages then we should have used the King money to give him a new deal.

Cost cutting was needed at this club. But there's a limit to how far it can go. It can go no further without serious ramifications.

Think about it logically. Bowyer obviously didn't trust Cairney in CM and when he played on the right last season he was poor. We lack pace as a team and Cairney had none. If your going to play out wide you need at least a bit of pace. It made sense to sell him, we got a good price, he obviously wanted to go and i'd rather have Marshall/Conway on the wing than Cairney, and we now have O'Sullivan and C Taylor to play out there. Cairney was hardly indispensible. Selling him to 'likes' of Fulham is irrelevant, as is whether they are bigger or better than us, we needed the money and Cairney, a supposedly creative player with only 3 goals and 3 assists last season, was simply not important enough to the team to keep at any cost.

To overcome the embargo problem we should have been tying our best players down to good contracts. How is giving players bigger contracts going to get us out of the embargo? The money saved on the likes of King will help reduce the wage bill, which will help reduce the losses. I agree about Rudy, it would be great if he signed a new contract but he wants to leave for the Prem and he'll earn more there than we can offer him so why would he sign a new contract? Why offer Cairney a new deal based on last seasons performances, and how do you know Fulham didn't offer him a lot more than we could offer him anyway?

selling a couple of players isn't the end of the world. Not selling them, not leaving the embargo and them letting them leave for free would be financial suicide.

Gestede did not travel to Portugal.

This LT piece says that Rovers have lost 12 players with first-team experience since the end of last season, although I can't name them all.

Edit: just noticed blueboy3333 already posted this link

Gardner being Craig Gardner? If only. He's exactly what our midfield needs, good engine on him and he can't half strike a ball. Him and furman would be a class pairing in centre midfield, I think furman looks pretty decent. You know for a fact Lowe will be starting in centre midfield first game of the season though.

Nah, his younger brother Gary.

I think 'contradiction' springs to mind here JHR !!

Might not be bigger or better than us but critically they are not under embargo which makes them considerably better placed than us. My horror comes in us not fighting the embargo which tells me they probably wouldn't want to spend even if the embargo was lifted.

But the money saved on King, Best and anyone else you care to mention has to be used to bring the expenditure in line with our income-and even now I don't think its that close- so the prospect of what we saved on certain outgoing players being used to tie down existing players gets us absolutely nowhere. Would these players that you want to tie down be those that weren't good enough for the last 2 seasons??

Yes of course there's a limit how far it can go without ramifications mate, that's why this Board has been at each others throats for god knows how long-those serious ramifications are happening in front of our eyes man!!

Somebody told me that Maguire was asked to come on trial and he told us to get to France!!

I think Maguire would be Kings replacement and IF Gestede goes Maynard may come. Furman will get deal too. The other trialists unsure.

The cretin Shaw has a certain eye on him at the moment.

Gestede cost £100.000. One of the best buys in rovers history if sold for £7m.

Furman did play in championship season 13/14 with Doncaster. Full South Africa international. Only 27. Hard to find better midfelders and captain material who also can score on a free. Good scouting work there.

Good scouting work????? Have you seen his CV and clubs he has played for in England???? He is probably about what we can hope for so far have we fallen but lets not pretend we have unearthed a gem that nobody knows about. The dumbing down of our Club is in full swing Neophox.

Are you still confident of Maguire?

Yeah, think he'll sign. Things always take longer when Venky's have to give the nod.

Brighton are hardly a fashionable club despite the location and good infrastructure. They've achieved nothing as a club previously and struggled last season.

Given the chance to play for Blackburn Rovers or Brighton, you'd have to pick Blackburn.

You mean YOU would! Naive in the extreme rovers11. I've said previously many times that any self respecting agent with a talented player on hisbooks would avoid BRFC (under embargo and with ffp forbidding the owners chucking money in )like the plague.

Seems I point this stuff out and some people choose to ignore it.

The question isn't whether Marshall might want to go there. If there's no better offer he might well want to go. However, the poster asks why we'd want to sell and then quotes reasons why he might want to go. 2 different things.

And has anyone told burnley that Brighton think they are the best supported club in the championship?

That footballing dynasty that is Brighton. Honours probably includes a few division 3 southern league wins. That said kind of agree with him in that although they have made zero impact on the footballing landscape with all those points he makes sounds like they are on the up whereas thanks to our regal owners we are in complete chaos.

Yes, because I support Rovers. I'm biased. Let's face it, a player would pick us or Brighton based on who offered the bigger financial package. Simple as that.

A footballer would have pre-V's. Any one who likes a crap beach and a chance to crap in the briney may think otherwise.

Good God how low have we fallen that we find ourselves in a contest with the whatevers of Brighton.

We already have a ready made alternative to Marshall in C. Taylor who would be far more effective over the course of a 46 game season imo.

Provided we have no injuries and suspensions all season you could have a point.

This bit of the thread has made me think exactly the same thing. We are in a world where our owners have screwed us up so much as a club we cannot now dream about competing with Brighton and bloody hove Albion. I'll add it to the lengthy list of reasons to hate the venkys.
