thenodrog Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Brighton is a fantastic place and Ben likes to party! Plenty of available sex too I hear...... ..... but it'll make his arse sore. Yes, because I support Rovers. I'm biased. Let's face it, a player would pick us or Brighton based on who offered the bigger financial package. Simple as that. Correct...... and if they offered the same I'd imagine the South east would win out hands down. A footballer would have pre-V's. Any one who likes a crap beach and a chance to crap in the briney may think otherwise. Good God how low have we fallen that we find ourselves in a contest with the whatevers of Brighton. We've been here before.... the really amazing thing is how high we were raised.

Not as good as Marshall on his day as a constructive player but Taylor IS a lot more consistent, better defensively and rarely goes missing.

So none of you lot can neither want or read or believe Marshall when he PUBLICLY states he has no wish to leave, he is happy here and his family is settled, Can you lot not be positive for once this dam year.
thenodrog Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Any 'positivity' has been knocked out of us............ the hard way too. The only positive things from last season imo were King and Gestede.

AllRoverAsia Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Any 'positivity' has been knocked out of us............ the hard way too. The only positive things from last season imo were King and Gestede. Rhodes scored a few - despite in the opinion of some being surplus to usage and sometimes not even played. Weird game.
JHRover Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 So if Taylor is a better bet than Marshall how come Brighton didn't offer him a contract this summer when he was available on a free and instead have apparently offered a 7 figure sum for Marshall? Same applies with Cairney. If he's really not up to much and we can do without him then why on earth have Fulham spent £3 million+ on him and not gone for a Taylor instead? Truth is that Cairney and Marshall are very good players at this level. That's why they are the ones attracting multi million pound offers and are likely to be the only ones in the Premier League in the near future. They are still relatively young and have plenty of time to develop and improve. The likes of Taylor and Williamson by contrast, whilst fantastic pros whose commitment and endeavour will never be questioned, are at the back end of their careers and have spent the entirety of their careers in the lower leagues. It is staggering that anyone would be comfortable with selling either of them. There's no such thing as a good deal for the club if we are significantly weakened at the expense of a rival whilst being unable to reinvest any of the money.
ptholt Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Bear in mind any bid will be automatically passed onto the owner to decide whether to - accept, reject or negotiate. So regardless of whether Marshy wants to go if someone decides they want to accept the bid, off they go to negotiate personal terms/medical. As to whether Brighton is bigger its inner city population is twice that of Blackburn, with an immediate catchment area of nearly half a million people with little/no decent football alternatives within 20-30 minutes. Granted last season was poor for them, but play offs twice in the last three years is arguably not bad going. Add in the recession proof property climate that exists around Brighton and Hove, a very nice town with links to london in 30 mins and a nicer climate to live in, agreeing terms wouldn't be that hard..

It hasn't even got a decent beach ffs

Once again - there's more to being a big club than catchment areas and attendances. If we are simply going off crowds then Brighton are the biggest club in the Championship. We've also got to take into account that they are from a seaside town on the South coast with little to no footballing tradition or pedigree, have never won anything, haven't been in the top division for about 30 odd years. It seems to be escaping people's attentions that barely 3 years ago Brighton were getting crowds of less than 10,000 playing on an athletics ground. Now they have a shiny new stadium and have had some money thrown at them, the good times have rolled with Poyet and being in the play-offs in the Championship. These things go in peaks and troughs, and a prolonged spell struggling in the Championship or back in League One will quickly see some of the new supporters drift away again. It is a nice town, yes, but if you are a young footballer the lifestyle of living in Salford/Manchester/Cheshire would just as attractive as living on the south coast. I'm sure Ben Marshall wouldn't be particularly interested in the climate difference either.

thenodrog Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 r u Marshall's agent or a property agent from Brighton? It hasn't even got a decent beach ffs How about Blackburns beach? Marshall doesn't live in Blackburn anyway. He lives in Manchester, so who is to say he would actually live in Brighton? Plenty of nice places within a 30 mile radius I'd imagine.

It hasn't even got a decent beach ffs No i just live and work close by your right the beach is best forgotten, but its a rather nice place to live, then again so are the normal footballers domains of Cheshire, but to discount it as being small and insignificant is probably a little far off the mark, it has potential to be large which is why the local authority has allowed such a nice stadium to be built in such a stupid place with sod all parking and poor access, but they will change that it is moving onwards and trying to go upwards, something im not sure we can currently aspire to under ffp.

The only positive things from last season imo were King and Gestede. Sorry - you can't say that Taylor is better than Marshall because of his consistency - and then say that King was a positive from last season - he was a positive in a few FA Cup matches and that was basically it.
Lancs Rover Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 A friend visited Brighton recently at the invitation of a mate. Said mate is a BHA ST holder. They went to a match together. My friend commented on how few people there seemed to be In the ground. Said mate pointed out it was never as full as the official attendance. Said mate never bothered attending all the games. Like a large minority of BHA STs who apparently like having them for their social cachet. Plastic fans, plastic club.

I worked on the South Coast for a few years and you are quite right - sand on the beach would be be a massive plus - but with those waves I don't think so. I still keep a boat down there.
Butty Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Martinez has said he intends to send Luke Garbutt out on loan this season, think whoever he goes on loan too he'll do well for. But I doubt we'll be going for him as we already have two options for left back and need to be filling places in the squad with positions which are needed
tomphil Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 People going on about Taylor being a better option than Marshall and wanting a striker who runs about more than Rhodes (we have one in Brown) are seriously in danger of going down the water carrier over quality route. I like the guy but a team full of Taylors would do nothing more than work hard and draw game after game. Your Marshalls and Rhodes turn draws into wins, get draws instead of losing and often win games on their own with their quality. We must keep hold of QUALITIY players and it's up to the guy in the dug out to get the right blend between grafters and quality, something he struggles with up to now. What's that old phrase...'use it or lose it'
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted July 14, 2015 Moderation Lead Posted July 14, 2015 How about Blackburns beach? Marshall doesn't live in Blackburn anyway. den Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Your Marshalls and Rhodes turn draws into wins, get draws instead of losing and often win games on their own with their quality. The league table tells me that we don't win enough games. That £8m has got "the team" nowhere. Good teams win games tomphil, not poor teams who put all their eggs into a basket with holes in it.
Rover_Shaun Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 If location, as a lure for footballers, was the main point then thank god Cornwall hasn't got a league club
joey_big_nose Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 It's a balance thing. Too many fancy dans and you lose your work rate. Too many "I know my job and I give a 100%" and you lose creativity. You need a mix. Also, crucially, both groups need to be lead, and really - as triers are much easier to find than talents - the triers should be at a minimum leaders. I like Taylor, gives his all, tries every game. But to be honest what I don't like is he lacks leadership. We have too many hard workers who don't organise people and themselves. Williams, Evans, Taylor, Olsson, Brown etc. Its a massive f-ing problem. They should do this. Hughes got it right. Have four or five flair players. They can float in and out of a game as long as they bring a bit of quality often enoung to justify their appearence (Tugay, Bentley, Pedersen, Dunn, McCarthy, Cruz etc.) Everybody else had to be a leader. Full stop. Hughes bought Savage, Reid, Nelsen, Samba, Mokoena and inherited Neill. All limited players in their own way but they not only worked hard - they organised and lead. We were also lucky to have the likes of Freidel and Bellamy who distinguished themselves by being both brilliant players and leaders. Currently we have zero leaders. Zilch. Its our biggest problem. If Taylor could lead I'd be all for him starting games. But he doesn't like every single bloody player we have. And he hasn't got the talent (unlike Marshall) to go into the affordable luxury bucket. Therefore he is a squaddie, no more. If Taylor left and we got someone who looked like they could wear the armband I would be fine with that, even if they were a bit worse at football than he is. If Marshall left I'd be worried that we had lost our last technically accomplished and genuinely creative midfielder.
