I lived in Wythenshawe for 5 years and Wallasey for 15 years and I know where I felt safer.

There are some funny buggers on Merseyside though, the best for me was during the champions league final between United and Bayern Munich. United were on a hiding to nothing and I was watching it in a crowded wine bar with Terry, Liverpool through and through but a big United fan.

He was a bit p1sssed and kept saying loudly 'change it Alex, change it'

As we were watching the lottery result came up and all the numbered balls flashed up on the bottom of the screen.

From the back of the room, 'Kin 'ell, he's taking 'em all off'

Obama allegedly paid Iran to ransom citizens.

http://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-sent-cash-to-iran-as-americans-were-freed-1470181874

Giving money to Iran, regardless of what is for, is not smart.

I think giving money in those circumstances is certainly counter-productive. Just encourages Iran to pull similar stunts in the future, thus unecessarily endangering US personnel in the area. I'd have definitely used the stick rather than the carrot on that one.

However in the wider context I personally think Iran is heading in the right direction. With Syria in turmoil, it's the last predominantly Shia Muslim country in stable existence. Which makes it a target for its aggressive Sunni neighbours like Saudi Arabia and certainly a target for IS.

There is also the encouraging sign within the country of Rouhani's more moderate government making further recent gains. This strikes me as an opportunity for the West to build bridges.

Blatant anti-Semitism from the Lebanese olympic team. Can you imagine if this had been the other way around? All the Israel haters in this country would be outraged.

Funny how the Israeli team were perfectly happy to share the bus with them considering Israel is always made out to be the unreasonable aggressors.

A very good news story demonstrating what can be achieved with long term vision and investment.

Not a bad return on £60m.

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/aug/07/national-forest-woodland-midlands-regeneration

Paul, whilst it's good that the environment there has been returned to its former glory, it shouldn't have been up to the public purse to fund it.

A company made millions from it and should have paid to rehabilitate the site.

That's supposed to happen at the many mine sites around Australia, but it doesn't always happen; companies suddenly go bust and the public are made to pick up the tab....

I see the point Dave but this is mining, pollution and industry which may go back 150 years or more. I'd rather see £60m thrown at solving the problem in 25 years than see possibly £000ms spent on court cases determining who should foot the bill.

When you think how much government wastes this positive.

Modern day mining licences, industry etc. absolutely should only be granted on the basis of the polluter pays. It's probably not practical but reinstatement financial bonds might be a way forward.

Nickname is Sky Bum I think.

World's 'largest aircraft' gets off ground

The world's "largest aircraft" embarked on its maiden flight on Wednesday, four days after a previous attempt was abandoned due to technical issues.

The Airlander 10 -- part plane, part airship -- took to the skies amid cheers and applause from crowds gathered at an airfield in Cardington, central England.

The successful flight comes 85 years after another airship -- the ill-fated R101 -- took off from the same airfield in October 1930 before crashing in France, killing 48 people and effectively ending the development of airships in Britain.

Originally developed for the US army as a surveillance aircraft, the 92-metre- (302 feet-) long Airlander 10, also has potential uses in the commercial sector, such as carrying cargo, according to makers Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV).

Child suicide attack kills 50 people at a wedding. Can see why nobody's mentioned it though, pales into insignificance when compared to the evil and world threat of Donald Trump.

Kurdish wedding, absolutely tragic.

Wasn't that because seats were reserved? Though, granted the whole thing was a bit ridiculous. Don't think it was worthy of any column inches to be honest. Like most things Corbyn does though, it all gets blown out of proportion by our mainly right wing media.....

Looked like the seats were reserved from the first clip, subsequent footage shows empty seats. He's an idiot.

Thankfully.

I think all the seats were reserved, that was what he was getting at (even if they were empty). Granted, I'm far from a fan of his, but the treatment he gets in the press is never relevant to his policies or anything like that, just juvenile irrelevant rubbish....

I see leaked documents from the department of health are showing major risks from the government plan for a full 7 day NHS.

The government response, well we are putting an extra £10bn in, however this is the same £10bn that has been announced 4 or 5 times since last year, and was the minimum needed to keep the service in its current form - not to transform it.

The cynic in me says its a deliberate attempt to try and make out the NHS to be 'failing' which would then give the impetus to bring in competition and therefore break up the service.
