Most people, really

A lot of horrendous drivers out there chief.

A free piece of advice to anybody who chances not stopping at zebra crossings when somebody is waiting (which seems to be a sizable portion of drivers): it's going to cost a lot more than the few seconds of your time if you hit the person or persons trying to cross.

Although you don't need to stop unless the person has shown the intention to cross by placing a foot into the road. I believe that is the highway code.

Unless you want your foot broken you'd have to be insane to do so. If a person is standing at a zebra crossing what other intention is there - admiring the paintwork, mesmerised by the flashing lights?

Hardly most though is it. If it was most then there'd be tens of thousands of crashes every day. Its about 5-10% I'd estimate, and the other 90-95% not only have to drive sensibly, they have to anticipate the idiocy of the 5-10% and basically help them out by getting out of the way of their utterly moronic driving. In that sense most people are very good drivers.

I'd say a sizeable proportion of the 5-10% terrible drivers (especially round here) don't have insurance and don't even have a licence. The rest tends to be made up of boy racers, people who are too old to drive competently and people who are just complete prats.

Where I live, there is a chippy directly in front of a zebra crossing. Regularly has people standing outside or talking right on the edge of the crossing. So there are situations where there can be people loitering.

I agree though that it is a little tenuous but those are the rules - see the bit below that only says you MUST give way if a pedestrian has moved onto the crossing.

Rule 195

Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing

Most may have been an exaggeration , granted. I'm too used to talking about the totality of crap making up most of our first team.

Aye, I know those are the rules, but IMV they just allow certain drivers to ignore zebra crossings entirely. As a pedestrian you're not going to step out into a road, even with your foot, if a car is approaching at speed.

I see your point regarding loitering in certain areas, but there's a difference between somebody chatting with friends, etc, and somebody clearly facing the road wanting to cross. Either way a driver should at the very least slow down, as if the person does step out and you hit them, you're screwed.

but he started it... ;)

TJ you are getting boring (as I'd hidden the post after this). There might not have been anything vastly wrong but its just petty point scoring which no one else wants to read.

TJ, I can play, hide your boring posts all day.

I'm "abusing the system" even though K-Hod has already hidden LOADS of your posts and asked you to stop it. And yet you carry on and get all pissy at me.

Is pissy allowed ?

As long as we know .

I saw one forum that got spam attacked real bad and they closed the forum and had up a sign that "Forums are dying", I don't know if they meant their forum, for the record, a type of bicycling forum or forums in general. Sometimes I think the popularity of forums has declined with the rise of other social media. "Dying"? Not sure, some forums have certainly scaled down. Maybe it's like magazines, some magazines work, others fall by the wayside.

Forums are superior to social media, but only if you appreciate the creativity and depth of discussion available. The next generation won't have the patience for such things and will expect everything to be created for them and for 140 words or less to be sufficient as an opinion. I'll be shaking my (probably virtual) cane at them... in my day...

Facebook is just full of people showing-off and 'showmances' as well by extension. It's a complete cringefest. It's like people turning life into a competition.

Money talks, wealth whispers etc.

(I'm still on there by the way as it's a necessary evil, but christ it's irritating at times!)
