Good posts from hypnotoad. I think the main danger regarding Rhodes and this Boro business now is that it will alert a Premiership Club to his availability who can match the sort of terms the owners want then it becomes a completely different ball game.

In purely footballing terms we simply can't afford to sell him to anyone now though. And he'll need to keep banging the goals in if he wants to keep alive the chance of a move in January or at the end of the season.

Does that matter though as we don't want to sell him anyway? And when he gets over his sulk and starts playing well again, it'll go back up. It probably seems ruthless, like we're holding him hostage during the prime years of his playing career, but he keeps making the decision to sign new contracts.

Every time he signs one he gets a substantial pay rise, but he makes it harder for clubs to buy him. That's the trade off, he's always happy to take the first, so he's gonna have to lump taking the second.

This is why I never understood the animosity for Lucas Neill when he left. Its just good sense for players who want to leave a club to not sign a new contract, and its up to the club to realise this is on the cards 1-2 years before and get them sold for a fee while they still can. We dropped the ball with both Neill and Hoilett, but have made the smart move with Gestede.

Rhodes on the other hand just keeps making it easy for us, we get to completely dictate the circumstances under which we sell him.

Quite right. He signs new contracts for much more cash when he wants.

Apparently Sunderland are interested now.

Having read the article again they might be putting just 2x2 together because Wickham has been sold.

Any club would be bonkers signing JR for more than £2M.

We over paid for him (ask the Huddersfield Chairman) and we still have to pay all the instalments.

How do you work that one out pb?

Did we manage to negotiate a "0% interest nothing to pay until 2050" DFS type deal?

I wonder if Venkys would accept less than they quoted Boro from a Prem club ? Rhodes price as has been said is down to what he cost in the first place plus his record and the fact others with a lesser record have gone for similar amounts. You could say it's market value.

I reckon if we had got him for 4/5 mill and he was now on offer for 8+ there'd be an auction for him including a good few Prem clubs.

I realise someone is going to come along with better stats. This really is a game changer.

I've never heard of Connor Wickham, he's 22 and scored 39 goals in 184 games - that's close to a 1 in 5 ratio. Crystal Palace have paid £8m for a player Sunderland don't think is PL quality - they paid £8m rising to £12m - with a career record of 1 in 6.

Rhodes is 25 with a career total of 325 games and 173 goals. That's a ratio of better than 1 in 2.

If Wickham is worth £8m to a PL club - he scored 11 goals in 79 PL games in 4 years - surely Rhodes should be a minimum of £15m possibly £20m?

I'm not suggesting he, or any footballer, is worth it but if Palace will pay £8m for Wickham??????

We should sit on him till someone stumps up the going rate.

Lots of good sense in SKH's posts. Much of this is of Rhodes' making

Sunderland after Rhodes? I dont see them coming in for Rhodes. They have Defoe who is poacher so dont them wanting another striker of that type.

They have just bought Lens in who is a pacey striker/winger and fits into their manager 4-3-3 system. Rhodes doesnt IMO.

Wickham wants to leave cos he wants to play the number 9 role not as a wide striker I am led to believe. Palace have wanted him for around the last 12 months. Expect Palace to be in the top 8 this season.

Graham has already been told he hasn't future there. That leaves them with Defoe and Fletcher. They need one more. Advocaat should have good connections so Rhodes shouldn't only option.

Lens, Fletcher, Defoe are Sunderland's strikers.

Advocaat will target their Dutch or German league for players.

Wickham is a very different sort of player. Mostly a link/support player while Rhodes is an out and out striker. I would be surprised if they tried to replace one with the other.

It's possible they feel they have already replaced Wickham with Lens and want Rhodes as a lone striker alternative to Fletcher and Defoe. I'm not convinced. If they had a strong support striker for Rhodes to play off maybe, but no one there really seems like that. It's a lot of money to spend on a square peg.

I'm sure advocaat would find a better suited player with top league experience in Germany, Spain or France for twelve million quid.

Lens by your own admission is more of a winger though Chaddy.

They have just lost a british player in Wickham. They may see Jordan as a good replacement for him.

Lens can play either up front or on the Wing of a 3 man striker force.

I'm would be very surprise if they move for Rhodes.

I have no doubt Rhodes will be attracting interest from premier league club and we all know they usually go about their business towards the back end of deadline day.

The only saving grace on this is Venkys seem to be as good in business as they are at running football clubs, which makes the sale of Rhodes almost impossible, and fills me with dread over the sale of the club should it ever happen.

shocking that someone who is/was? a prominent trust chap doesn't know who Wickham is. The same person didn't know Yeovil were in our division a couple of years back. Certainly doesn't fill you with any confidence.
