tomphil Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 It wasn't outstanding football but we kept the ball for large periods of the game. To say we couldn't string two passes together is not something I would accuse us of today. It was average, not great entertainment of course but who cares we got a result for once. Thing with this div is so many teams are evenly matched and it's so competitive that they often cancel each other out. Lack of real quality players to unlock teams and lack of any other than bog standard managers with no clever tactics all add to it. I suppose Charltons manager will point to a 14 mill rated striker as being the only real difference.

Nope, as far as I can see he didn't mention it at all. Just said he thought they were unlucky and that the first goal was crucial.

Backroom Tom Posted September 19, 2015 Backroom Posted September 19, 2015 Charlton looked like a team that didn't care, a team that is content going through the motions and targeted very little in away games. watching them walk out for the second half I can't remember seeing a team look as disinterested! It was refreshing today that we didn't have to resort to desperate tactics and we were comfy once the second went in
Parsonblue Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 It wasn't outstanding football but we kept the ball for large periods of the game. To say we couldn't string two passes together is not something I would accuse us of today. Agreed, I thought we retained possession very well today. Instead of just lumping high balls forward, we played it around and moved the Charlton defenders about. It was very similar to how we played on Wednesday and we now seem more intent on playing our way through midfield. I thought Guthrie and Evans were excellent in both games and Akpan looked the part as well when he came on today.
tomphil Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 It was good that we tried to kill the game off and also had the subs available to do it. Around the 65th min I was a bit worried, I thought he'll bring Akpan on and just try to see it out but it seemed they were going for it today, refreshing to see. In the not to distant past they'd have been settling for one nil mid way through the second half. Don't know whether I can actually put it down to good management yet though
A cup of beans Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 And I thought OUR defending was bad! The match report is excellent. Paints the whole picture.
Pedro Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Akpan for me is better than Evans but Evans and Guthrie have to keep their places on merit. First time in a while we have had strong option there. Evans has played very well in the past 3 games, finally looks like his confidence is coming back. I like Akpan too though.
cesus Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I said before the game 3 points was all that mattered and we achieved that so happy days. I think previous posters have covered all points from the game, only a few points I want to bring up. I thought Evans had one of his best games for us. I thought the two chances Rhodes missed in the first half were absolute sitters and was actually quite poor he didn't take both. Charlton were very poor but could have quite easily picked up a few goals. Hanley didn't "lose his head" when he picked up the yellow he broke up play as an easy pass to the left was very much on which would have seen the Charlton player through one on one. For once I could actually understand the sideways and backwards passing as it was done under pressure thus meaning charlton left gaps, when we do it at 1-0 down with the opposition sitting back it is infuriating. I genuinely see no place for Lowe starting in central midfield, he is behind Guthrie, Evans/Akpan, Williamson in that order.
Backroom Tom Posted September 19, 2015 Backroom Posted September 19, 2015 Rhodes missed 3 absolute sitters but his second goal was a harder chance to take I think. I still don't know how we Failed to score when 4 on 2!
bob fleming Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Hanley has never played better for us. If Rhodes is a Premier League player I'm a Dutchman. Unlucky Garns. He's a coming. Delighted today. Well deserved. They could have had two first half, we could have had 3 or 4. No prob. Tommy Lawrence has slimmed down since his Liverpool days and, quite simply, was fantastic. Bring on the leopards.

I still don't know how we Failed to score when 4 on 2! Agreed, the two in the first half just seemed more significant with the first win hoodoo still hanging over us. The 4 on 2 was perfectly played until the woeful miss. 5 would not have flattered us today but you kinda have to say on another day Charlton themselves would have had a few too.
chris_h Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Hopefully this result signals a run of form that hits its peak late next month in Royston Vasey.
Wing Wizard Windy Miller Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Today was my first game as been away on hols. Must say I thought we looked much better knocking it around than last year. Guthrie and Evans showed a good work rate and tried to push us forward. Enjoyable to watch and the last goal was a great move. Guthrie is much better at picking the ball up deep and playing a probing ball. To think we had williamson and lowe playing that role last year! Lets hope this wasnt a one off. Anybody can beat anybody in this league. Play like today and we will beat most sides. Thought Bowyer's subs were spot on today as well. Still. One swallow does not a summer make...
Mr. E Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 And I thought OUR defending was bad! Dear Lord, yeah, Charlton would ship 5 to a conference side if they defend like that...
joey_big_nose Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Hull should show if we've had a lucky break with three relatively disinterested teams or we have genuinely turned a corner. The result will obviously be part of it, but just as important will be the midfield showing they can keep up an effective passing and pressing game against probably a better and more motivated side.
1864roverite Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Result paled into insignificance as it was such a delight watching the Japanese do the south Africans in the RWC. They celebrated long and hard!
Stuart Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 The 4 on 2 was perfectly played until the woeful miss. It was very badly played, with the pass going right instead of left into the only place that gave the defender a chance. Just goes to show that footballers are not good when given thinking time.

Maybe the ball should have gone to the left, maybe it would have wildly the been hit into the stand, the chance that did come from the play we did create was a good one and should have been buried.

To be fair to Marshall, the ball ended up just behind/under him. The chance should have been much much simpler.

A cup of beans Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Well done to Japan (thought I'd join in) Never been into Rugby union. Not enough hours in my week to cram a dull sport into.
