[Archived] Charlton Preview!

Nice to have that winning feeling, happier with the number of chances we created - but - still concerns.

As poor as Charlton were for large parts, they had at least 4 very good chances but luckily for us Watt put in an Ashley Ward-esque performance. No exaggeration to say it could have been 10-7 to us!

We (JR especially) missed plenty of chances - we need to be more ruthless as we'll not get that many in most games.

Finally, we got what most people think is our most effective team - no Lowe, no Spurr and 2 up top. However, what's the betting that when everyone's fit Lowe, Spurr and 4-5-1 will return?

Judging from today it seems like we should be starting with Guthrie/Akpan in the centre, with Lawrence playing behind Rhodes. Koita is a good option to come on and harass tired defenders towards the end, but doesn't seem to have the creativity or goalscoring instinct to merit a starting place.

Wouldn't drop Evans - he was immense today.

Good result.

Lawrence was very impressive when he came on, beating players both to set up Rhodes for his second and then before smashing one in himself. I quite like Koita but Lawrence should get a start at Ipswich.

Lowe and Spurr simply cannot come back into the team when they're fit.

As an aside, what's happened to the big picture of the title winning team that was outside where the BBE/JW stand meet?

Much needed win. Rhodes was excellent but not his usual clinical self. Evans pressing and general performance are at a level now he needs to maintain, very good.

Bit of caution on Lawrence, was brilliant when he came on but Charlton (who were bobbins) were tiring. But the lad certainly has something about him. Wouldn't rush him in just yet.

Actually thought we were pretty good in both halves, cannot remember last time I said that.

It's gone. I'm disappointed

Firstly what a star Lawrence is.

Secondly eventhough we won that was a pretty dreadful game of football.

The standard was League 2 at the very best. Two poor sides.

We need to improve on today. Until the last 15 minutes or so it was yawn football.

Agree it was very poor entertainment, very little excitement to our play, not sure it was League 2 standard but then I haven't seen any in years.

Lawrence had an immediate impact but we should wait to see if he's a star or not.

My next door neighbour, Utd fan, took his son. He was impressed by the good standard of football. Make of that what you will. Personally I was less than impressed - we would of lost to a good team.

Whilst Lawrence may not be a star at this juncture, surely he's a better bet playing behind Rhodes than a guy we got on a free transfer? If we've got him here on loan we might as well play him.

When the game is tighter someone with arial ability offers you an out ball. Lawrence might be the second coming, but let's not heap too much pressure on the lad too early. Wasn't at Brighton, led to believe he was lively then?

Nobody is calling him the second coming or anything so ridiculous. He's surely a better option than Delfouneso, at the very least. If we want a big lump who can jump around we already have Chris Brown. I don't mind Koita but I don't see how Delfouneso can get in the team ahead of Lawrence and hope he doesn't going forward.

I am hoping he is the second coming. Spot on with Delfouneso, but he has been crap throughout his career, still don't get why we bought him.

At the moment i would hold Lawrence back for last 30, if he keeps doing what he did today he will force himself in.

I really enjoyed the game today. I thought we played some pretty decent stuff through midfield instead of hitting it long. Guthrie and Evans continued to impress as they did on Wednesday and Olsson makes a difference at left-back. I thought Lawrence looks a pretty decent player and Akpan again impressed when he came on. No complaints about today. Charlton had chances, but then so did we before we scored. We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and there is still work to be done in defence. However, for the third time this week we look like we are starting to integrate the new players into the team and are starting to look a decent outfit.

Completely missed it all as I was otherwise detained today.

But isn't it nice to get a win? A clean sheet, too.

As much as the last 5 years have ground my gears, I still totally hate losing.

Whether or not it's a flash in the pan, who knows, but it's a hell of a lot better than zero points.

Was sticking up for Spurr in the week, but playing like he did today Ollson should be in the team every week.

Change of goalie has certainly made a difference. Raya is highly rated but he had the crowd nervous and players with his kicking and probably started us on the back foot.

Enjoyable day, but tougher tests around the corner.

good win today and very pleased to get our 1st win finally this season.

Thought we played some good passing football and control the game. Guthrie and Evans impressed me again in centre midfield and for me, Evans was my man of the match.

Rhodes does what he does best and that is scores goals and very impressed with the number of good/clear cut chances we are creating.

Charlton were poor but could have scored couple goals today but very poor side today.

we have a weakness on the right side of defence between Duffy and Henley where they get caught out of position too much but Hanley was very good today

I really don't understand how anybody thought that Rovers had very little excitement to our play. we were passing ball very ball and creating chances to score. what more do people want?

Great result and crucial three points in the circumstances but I actually thought it was a desperately poor performance until we scored the second. Sideways back, sideways sideways back, always looking to go backwards even when the ball was in an around the opponents penalty box.

All that changed with the introduction of Lawrence who finally injected the bit of urgency we'd been desperately lacking within 20 seconds of coming on by driving to the by line for the first time in the game and setting up the sort of chance for Rhodes he should be thriving on as a matter of course. After that we grew in confidence and it was very comfortable.

Two massive positives for me today: Lawrence showed how to play with Rhodes within seconds of coming on by getting to the byline and pulling a ball back into the area for him. I can't remember the last time we did that under GB as opposed to inverted wingers merely standing the ball up in front of the oposition defence.

Secondly Akpam looked a colossus when he came on and immediately gave us a sort of physical presence in midfield we've lacked for years.

It was all about the 3 points today and notwithstanding the fact I thought we looked poor for long periods hopefully that vital first win can give the players the confidence to kick on and play with a bit more fluency and urgency going forward.

Rev, agree with all you say. Rovers were dire for much of the game and struggled to put two passes together, it was minor league footie.

However there were some bright sparks: Lawrence and Rhodes, Akpan and a decent performance from both our full backs.

A good 3 points but nothing to get carried away about.

First time I saw Koita I thought he had 2 left feet. Today confirmed that he is a one trick pony with his headed flick-on's?

Koita is good in the air but I prefered the first couple of games where he was more wild and trying shots from distance.

Lawrence looks very tidy and for me can be a more effective Cairney.

I've said all I need to about Akpan, looks strong, mobile and has great composure.

They do seem to have drilled that out of Koita which is disappointing. There was definitely a net breaker coming.

It wasn't outstanding football but we kept the ball for large periods of the game. To say we couldn't string two passes together is not something I would accuse us of today.

Exactly. Rovers kept the ball much better.

Really dont know how anybody could say we couldnt put two passes together. Must have been at a different game.

Rovers have 59% of possension
