roverandout Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Can see Ronaldo retiring from Portugal duty after the euros, I really don't think his heart is in it when he plays for the national team due to inferior players
joey_big_nose Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Can see Ronaldo retiring from Portugal duty after the euros, I really don't think his heart is in it when he plays for the national team due to inferior playersPortugal have a pretty decent team to be honest, they should get much more out of them. Like Belgium they just dont look motivated and cohesive. Ronaldo is captain but his body language and communication was abysmal.
roverandout Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I think Portugal are very ordinary team with few quality players, they rely too much on pretty boy
Husky Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I've just turned over to ITV to watch the highlights.
BlueMonday Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 Ronaldo's ego stifles anyone he plays with. Not a team player. He greets team mates mistakes with hands in the air indignation, but got encouragement when he missed his penalty. Says it all. Its like everyone around him is holding him back from greatness. I'd punch his lights out if he was on my team.
joey_big_nose Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I think Portugal are very ordinary team with few quality players, they rely too much on pretty boyTheyve got more quality than the majority of teams at the euros. They should have walked that group. If I was a Portuguese fan id be fuming.
oldjamfan1 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I haven't seen Shearer laughing like that since the half time score of Faroe Islands 2 Scotland 0 came in a few years ago.
joey_big_nose Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I know its asking for trouble, but I still havent seen a team as good as England at controlling a game. I take that back. Just caught up on the Spain v Turkey game. Wow. Best performance by anyone at the euros yet by a mile. Look like champs to me.
Neal Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 I take that back. Just caught up on the Spain v Turkey game. Wow. Best performance by anyone at the euros yet by a mile. Look like champs to me. They looked a shadow of their former selves in the first game, not the same team without Xavi and Alonso. Against stronger/physical opposition that can also play I think they could get overpowered.
donnermeat Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 A strange combination. Badr Hari is a legit psycho!

Plenty of top sides start slowly in tournament football, Germany are usually notoriously slow starters and end up winning the thing! Portugal will probably make the quarter or semi finals after being awful in the first game and unlucky last night.

They'll be under a lot of pressure against Hungary though, who are no mugs themselves. Am I right in saying that no third placed team can end up with more than 4 points now?

Am I right in saying that no third placed team can end up with more than 4 points now? Hungary are no mugs, you're quite right, in fact from the games I've seen there are no mugs still in contention in any group. Slovakia and NI are on 3 points, Portugal on 2, all in 3rd place. Only 1 game today, France v Swiss, good job Lancs are on against Birmingham bears in T20
Stuart Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 True. They'll be under a lot of pressure against Hungary though, who are no mugs themselves. Am I right in saying that no third placed team can end up with more than 4 points now? Sounds like a misquote in relation to England now qualifying for the last 16. England will qualify as a minimum of third place now.
oldjamfan1 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Sounds like a misquote in relation to England now qualifying for the last 16. England will qualify as a minimum of third place now. Not the easiest thing to work out but I think if we got thumped by Slovakia it is technically possible for us not to qualify if other 3rd placed teams (with 4 points) had a better goal difference. I think it is possible for 5 of the groups to have teams finishing 3rd on 4 points. But I'm not certain (which is why I didn't phrase it as 'England have qualified')
Gav Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 If England win the group, which I think they will, they'll play 3rd place from A,C or D at Parc des Princess next Saturday, it could be Northern Ireland, but plenty of permutations before thats decided.

Only 1 game today, France v Swiss, good job Lancs are on against Birmingham bears in T20 Two games today- Romania v Albania could be very important because if it is a draw, it will rule Group A out of providing a contender for best 3rd place finisher meaning 4 out of the other 5 third place finishers will go through. Group D is also a candidate for not producing a best third place team.
Gav Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Apologies, I can't see the Romania game anywhere on the TV guide, but you're quite right philipl and it is a very important game in the context of 3rd place placings if England win the group.

Only 1 game today, France v Swiss, good job Lancs are on against Birmingham bears in T20 But when you factor in who they play in their final game, and the other fixtures, it isn't that straightforward. Teams sitting on 1 point can also get to 4 points etc. It would take a freakish set of results to prevent England from qualifying, but we aren't quite there yet.
perthblue02 Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Bit of trivia. Last night somebody posted on twitter that they thought they had heard it mentioned during the R5 commentary of the Iceland v Hungary game that one of the players was an ex Rovers trialist although unsure which player. Sparked my interest, quick searches came up a blank so listened to the re-run commentary on the bbc iplayer site (yes i know sad). Turns out it was Hungarian central defender Richard Guzmics who spent two weeks on trial in 2014 according to this translation of a polish interview https://translate.google.com.au/translate?hl=en&sl=pl&u=http://historiawisly.pl/wiki/index.php%3Ftitle%3DRichard_Guzmics&prev=search Oh and the Hungarian GK played for the dingles!
philipl Posted June 19, 2016 Posted June 19, 2016 Oh and the Hungarian GK played for the dingles! There had to be an explanation for him playing in over-sized gardening pants.

Its on tv too on either bbc4 or itv2 depending who has the games tonight.
