I used to get incredibly upset whenever England got knocked out of a major tournament. I remember being particularly heartbroken over a late Romanian penalty that sent us tumbling out of Euro 2000 at the group stage. Yesterday's defeat is probably our most disappointing exit tournament since then and yet I just find the whole thing mildly amusing. From the images of Hart, Cahill & Smalling sprawled out in the opposition penalty area at the final whistle, to Hodgson's ludicrously pre-prepared resignation speech in which he thanks the players and says he will look back on his time as England manager with pride (despite only winning one major tournament game out of seven!).

Credit to Iceland, they deserved the win on the night, they took their opportunities well and defended the lead admirably. I was a little uncomfortable with the way pre-match the press and media seemed to underestimate Iceland based on the fact they've got players who play for Cardiff and Charlton or this silly notion that population size as anything to do with a game of football. As if to say England should automatically beat them just because they have players who play for more prestigious clubs or simply because they are a much large country. The Icelandic side looked like warriors on the pitch with an obvious game plan to execute. Whereas England in the second half looked like nervous schoolboys rather than well-established Premier League footballers who seemed to lack any sort of cohesive plan, not helped by Roy's strange substitution which narrowed up the game and seemed to ultimate revolve around getting as many offensive minded players on the pitch at the expense of team shape.

Both have multiple promotions on their cv.

Looks like Redknapp has already ruled himself out though - or knows he won't get a look in - given his comments since last night.

Allardyce it is then. :tu:

Multiple promotions eh

Lets give it to Warnock then, I bet he's got more

But back in the real world Stuart, its a tough one, no stand out candidates at all.

Gus Hiddink?

Warnock. Yes, another English candidate.

Hiddink might be a decent shout, actually, but would he really be any different than Capello? Or even Sven?

I stil believe the problem is the FA and their partners. Until that changes it's just a second rate job.

Maybe it's time to ditch all PL players and only pick English players from Football League clubs. You can be sure they'd play with a lot more pride.

Not a bad idea at all Stuart.

Hiddink is a fantastic shout. Is he available?

Edit - actually maybe not! Performed terribly with the Netherlands and Turkey national teams recently. Did well with Russia, South Korea and Netherlands (again) but you need to go back a bit. Hmm mixed bag.

Did well with Australia, 2005-08; when Lucas Neill played for Australia. Every coach will have blemishes on their record apparently.

A lot of articles out there, Southgate as interim manager perhaps.

The next England Manager will select by Martin Glenn, Dan Ashworth and David Gill.

Glenn said The England FA are open to Foriegn manager..

I think Hoddle has been option. Experience at this level, Tactical good and knows the game.

Southgate, Redknapp and Allardyce should be on shortlist.

Its a big NO from me about us appoint foriegn manager

Blind patriotism and discrimination towards someone from another country managing us isn't the way forward Chaddy. The best possible qualified candidate should get the job, although it would be nice if they were homegrown.

Take the England Rugby team for example, struggled to beat Australia on their soil, lacked belief, employed an Aussie and then completed a whitewash on their turf. My point being, it shouldn't matter where they come from if they can instill belief into English players representing our country, get results and turn the mindset of English football.

Bilic or Low for me hands down. @#/? to patriotism I want to see us compete and possibly even win something.

I cant see why Bilic or Lowe would want the job to be honest. Not really worth the hassle from their point of view.

There is some speculation today that Southgate will be appointed interim manager for 12 months until the right man (Wenger?) becomes available. This is typical of the dithering FA if true as the World Cup qualifiers start in October and we could be half way through the qualifiers when the permanent managers takes up the reins and gives him less than 12 months in the job.

Little wonder the game in this country is in a mess.

Southgate! Another ridiculous appointment. Relegated Boro and was sacked by them. His u21's finished last in last years Euro tournament . And has he done anything else?

Working for the FA already so his face fits. English football is in the hands of amateurs (except that they receive big salaries).

England supporters deserve better.

I've long thought your knowledge of football is limited at best and lead by blind faith in certain individuals but this is beyond mental.

Hoddle hasn't been near the top level of football for over 10 years and was last seen making a dogs dinner of things at Wolves, tactically he is so far out of date it hurts. Did you not listen to any of the nonsense he droned on during the England games?

None of Southgate, Redknapp or Allardyce should be anywhere a shortlist, unless its for putting the bins out.

Southgate has an appalling record, granted he recently did well with the junior england team but its against very mixed opposition and ultimately kids football.

Redknapp, well where do I start. Just no, absolutely not.

I have a lot of time for Sam and think he is a good manager at certain sorts of clubs, England manager, absolutely not.

We are so caught up in this country with the idea of having to have an english manager, ultimately there currently isnt the quality required. Look abroad, fantastic coaches all over, Unai Emery has just gone to PSG, Guidolin at Swansea has an incredible record. We are so inward looking its embarrassing. The act that Gareth Southgate, a failure at Middlesborough is even in the frame tells you everything about the FA and the footballing authorities in this country.

Most countries hire a manager from their own nation. It's what you're meant to do. It could even be seen as a form of cheating if you don't.

The point of international football is you are testing the strength of your country's footballing talent against another's, and managers fall into this criteria as well.

Saying that, obviously if Mourinho fancied a crack at the Scotland job I would quickly change my tune. But an extreme example nonetheless.

Arry has put forward Tim Sherwood, he must have been drunk or delusional.

The England job is career suicide. Its why the options are always limited and its why we over pay massively to lure somebody half decent.

The fact that Southgate is even close to being in with a chance highlights how bad the options are

Whoever the next manager is he needs to have a clear vision on how he wants the team to play. To many seem to bow to the press and public opinion and half wing it, constantly tinkering.

Roy at times was like he was playing a new Football manager game, where you constantly tinker looking for that right formula and formation that works all the time.

Foreign players come into our leagues and most struggle early on. The pace and physicality of the game catches them out. Often top players cant adjust, others need a season to get going. This is how we play, this our our style. fast paced, direct in your face football. yet we spend all our time with england trying to replicate something other countries do. Lets do it the spanish way, then the german way bla bla. We need to focus on what we do well and play that way.

The Italy v Spain game was all we need to watch. Italy were superb and are everything English football is and should be. 100% committed, aggressive, direct fast counter attacks, in your face pressing for 90mins, throwing bodies infront of everything. Its how we play week in week out and its how we need to setup the england team

FGS above nails it for me. Just to add to that, it seems as though we are ashamed of our own identity as a footballing nation for some reason, when we invented the damn game!

Hard work, pressing, crosses into the box and in your face football is what we are good at and the way we've always played. Forget copying other countries and their models, we need our own identity. Which we already have, just seem afraid to show. That alongside sorting the players out psychologically.

Some of the names being bandied about are awful candidates. To put it more simply, folk wouldn't be happy with them as manager of Rovers, so why would they accept them as England manager?
