I think it is fair to say poor Pete got a bit of stick at Blackburn Council for that one Tony. Any bragging rights he had from playing for the Rovers were lost, in (for him) a horrible split-second.

I spoke to him several times about this Andy during games and if he ever questioned one of my decisions I reminded him about it. I actually saw him in Lidl recently and passed the time of day with him.

There's no secret to the success of Wales and Iceland - they have both have a tremendous work ethic and team spirit that makes up for any deficiencies of the players at an individual level. The good feeling in the dressing room is all down to the managers.

All talk of "systems" and tactical formations that led to England's downfall are irrelevant when confronted with the above.

WOW. I find myself agreeing with you 100% Jim. Possibly the most sensible post you have ever made.

McManaman made a good point over here on ESPN England had no urgency no drive or imagination. One free.kick just in Icelands half he was flippin out" what are they doin, 6 passes from that free kick and they have gone 20 yards.backwards. This happened all night long. It is gut wrenching that.we showed some promise in the build up, with the youngest team and we put the shackles on em. They play like they are afraid. We need some balls not caution all the.time.

What baffles me regarding England is why we abandoned what worked so well in the first half against Russia. Walker and Rose were bombing down the wings and getting balls into the area, which was causing Russia all sorts of problems and stretching their defence.

Exactly, why. Walker was great that game, then what back to safety first.

I just look at the body language of our players, before and during the game what I saw was a bunch of players who really looked like they did not even want to be there.

What ever happened to us as a nation that once produced great goal keepers. Hart ffs, when ever he has time to think about a shot he screws it up . 2 huge clangers 2 goals he should have stopped. Very Bonettiesque. Aaaah for a Gordon Banks or a Peter Shilton.

Please....... man goes on holiday with his wife after 11 month sports season. Yeah, what a total dick!

And while we're at it, what a pathetic, snide dig by the ragtop - "He might have a lot less hair, but the England captain still managed to let it down..."

WTF?!

They wouldn't write a line like that about Gail Porter so I see no need to be saying it about Wayne Rooney.

Rooney had the worst game I have.ever seen him play. Just.how many times did he.lose or give the ball away. A joke he.stayed on the field, again a decision driven by fear of what some might say, perhaps driven by comments.made.after he pulled Rooney last time. The.look on Woy's face during that.gsme, well he just needed a brolly.

I think that Gill has spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson about who to appoint and he will recommend Sam Allardyce.

if Allardyce does get the England job then who do Sunderland appoint next

How did Sir Alex's recommendation for his replacement at Man Yoo work out. I don't think Sam is right for England, or is he?

I'm not sure if anything can be taken from these kinds of stats.

Transcribed it manually so one can double-check it for accuracy.

It seems there is some room for hope with Iceland if one is supporting them.

Turns out K**n always knew Coleman was destined for success...

“I would always say to him: 'you have so much presence just speak to the boys as if you are speaking to them like you did when you were the captain'."

I can't believe some news outlets/journos still give him the time of day.

(edit: article from the other day btw)

Competitive is a fairly loose description of never having beaten them though. I'd love to see Iceland do it but I think their performances in Euro 2016 are more of a guide than any historical fixtures (all bar one are 17+ years ago)

So, with Chiellini, if he didn't fake the injury, there might not have been enough time to make the substitute? That is a bit what it looks like.

Still, I think a number of teams might try that trick. They wanted to leave maybe their best player on the pitch until pks.

He knows a lot for a man who failed so miserably in management that he could only get a job in footballing backwaters.

He's probably just looking for a claims company, to see if knows anyone who has been in an accident.

Iceland are playing France tonight, bleedin ICELAND!

Belgium held the record of most consecutive appearances in the World Cup by a non-host team (in Europe I assume). So that caveat basically nullified Germany, Italy and Spain who all hosted during that streak.

So that was 1970-2002 and during that time, they were also runner-up to the 1980 Euro; so a good record though not finishing higher than 4th ever, 1986 in the World Cup.

This isn't about England. It's about how superbly France have played tonight. Hat's off to them.

No.... sorry... this IS all about England and how overrated we are .....ojf1 !

Not sure if you've misunderstood my post JAL. England aren't playing tonight, tonight is France's night. They have played football the way it is meant to be played and blown Iceland away in a little over half an hour.

England don't deserve to be mentioned in the same discussion. When did we ever do this to a team in the knockout stages of a tournament ? (including 1966!!)

I'm sure it's happened but I don't know the last time any team ran up a lead like this on another in the knockout. It probably has happened. They said 4-0 is the most in a first half in the Euros.

France are doing what the nation was led to believe England were capable of doing, unfortunately nothing could be further from the truth.

Gutted for Iceland still want them to do well, but want France to knock a few more in just to highlight the gulf between England and France in terms of footballing excellence.

Most realistic English folk know that we aren't in the same bracket yet as the very top nations. We still should have been playing tonight, right enough!
