Mrs Shoelaces went at the end of the school year in summer. I hung around until this half term. When the time comes you know I suppose. I did anyway. We're out in Spain at the moment. When we came out here I was totally down on football and Rovers. Can't wait to get back now.

Are you/were you a teacher?

Well done TS. I took early retirement in April this year. Absolutely loving it. Mrs CLB should be following suit in the not too distant future.

We're down in Northwich now but I'll be up for as many games as I can, at least until the Rugby League starts again in February.

we were the same at the end of last season. Not sorry to have missed any of he matches this season as most weekends we were doing something more enjoyable. It felt strange to go to Ewood today, but looking forward to match next week. Would have gone to Preston but we are down in Slough this weekend. Not the nicest of places but the premier Inn was cheap and I want to go to Windsor.

No thanks ! Mrs Shoelaces was. I was an engineer for most of my working life. Still am I suppose. Last 11 years I spent as a technician in another Secondary School to my wife. I really enjoyed my time there but nothing is forever.

Ah! We've overlapped occupations. I have been an engineer (broaching) and teacher (still frequently). I also dream of moving to Spain - sooner rather than later!

I had a great time in engineering ( machine tool fitter ) but it's hard on the body and these days nobody values engineers in this country. When I was about 25 a pal of mine was a teacher. I was earning about 30 % more than he was. Now that situation will have been reversed. I had a pal who joined the police at that time, he took a big cut in wages to do it. That wouldn't be the case now.

We got our apartment out in Spain about a year ago. It's in a small village ( 2,000 pop ) in the middle of nowhere halfway between Granada and Almeria. We didn't intend to buy a place out here but we got an offer we couldn't refuse. A lovely apartment, fully kitted out, for 40,000. You do need some Spanish at the very least, nobody but the village optician speaks any English !

We intend to spend maybe 4 months of the year out here. Unfortunately some of that time will be in the football season. Were been out here for the last three weeks, apart from the first two days the weather has been glorious. Like an English summers day, not too hot, every day. I'm not a sun worshiper but a I do like the consistency of the weather here.

You sure about the salary thing? Admittedly I'm only on supply, but I earn about £200/week on average. Supply work is hard to come by at times.

I do know that the starting salary for a full time NQT is £22,020 though. How does that compare with engineering (or does it depend on which area/field you work in)?

A lot depends on the area. The Rochdale area where I live has had a real caning regarding the collapse of the engineering industry. The number of redundant engineers looking for work plus the lack of demand for those sorts of skills has massively depressed wages in the sector. I remember looking in the window of an employment agency in Blackburn several years ago and being surprised at the wages on offer for my sort of work. Even then they were offering £ 3 to £ 4 an hour more than similar jobs in Rochdale. Maybe a lot of the jobs in Blackburn had links to the aerospace industry ( sub contract shops etc )

How many days do you work for that income Mike ?

By the way the purchase of the apartment was financed by my wife's pension lump sum. No way could I have ever accumulated that sort of dosh from my earnings.

Engineering differs with field, the field I am in (aviation) varies greatly on qualifications and experience.

we have a static caravan in france where we too spend about 3 months of the year. Disadvantage is that it's not open in winter. Wouldn't want to live abroad permanently but love being able to spend extended periods there. Always miss the start of the football season but make up for it by attending matches in france.

Interesting, thanks for a detailed reply :) It would be 2.5 days income. I tend to get 2-3 days each week (mixes of afternoons, mornings and full days). It's very frustrating and I've only had 1 interview and one acknowledgement of application from about 8 FT jobs applied for :/

Everyone seems to demand experience that an NQT simply doesn't have, but I still apply for any job that appeals to me regardless.

Yeah getting into full time teaching seems to be really tough going off my limited experience. My three immediate work colleagues ( all under thirty ) struggled getting interviews and permanent appointments. Eventually they all got fixed up but it wasn't easy for them. They all did plenty of supply work at first.

I'm ambivalent about teaching , I liked my job as a technician which involved a lot of one to one " teaching/ coaching " in the workshop but I don't think I'd enjoy full class teaching as much. It wouldn't be for me. Mrs Shoelaces has had a lifetime in secondary education and loved it. She worked full time until she was 64 and if it wasn't for the rules regarding drawing her lump sum she'd still be working now. In fact she's doing internet exam marking now as I write this !

Having said that for the last twenty years she's been an Assistant Head with the commensurate lesser teaching load.

What subject do you teach Mike ? If it's PE the last time the school I worked at advertised for a teacher they had about 150 applicants !

Dorito, I don't have your number these days, send it me. I know a chap who's a headteacher in Greater Manchester, he's always on the lookout for staff, bit of a high staff turnover as I think it's a difficult school. However if he can give you something worth a go.

Don't divide your salary by the amount of hours you actually do...frightening!

I was disapointed with the attendance yesterday, i think the awful weather and xmas coming soon were factors, however i felt after all the positivity from Rover's fans since PL's appointment, we would see increase (2-3000) how wrong was i!!

And before anyone mentions me moaning or being negative, i am not, i feel the club have just done an outstanding piece of business, it looks like we will be out of the embargo, the future looks so much more positive, I feel it's time the fans started to back the club now, we need you!

What do fellow fans think?
