Interesting that if Lambert stays true to his word and we don't pay a transfer fee this window then it will be 2 years this summer since we last paid a fee for a permanent signing, with Shane Duffy being the only cash signing that summer.

When was the last time the club had such a period without spending any money at all on signings?

He did talk about the possibility of spending money post match Saturday.

Didn't we buy Steele on December 31st 2014, just before the ban ?

Did we pay a fee for him? I always thought he was on loan and out of contract at Middlesbrough the following summer, Middlesbrough were happy for him to go so let him sign for us before the embargo came into place so we could pay his wages without restriction from the league.

Maybe Lambert wants to change our way of playing with a hold up type striker and the midfield getting forward in support much more than at present. Graham, or anybody else, won't get the goals on their own playing the way we are now. Graham and Rhodes may work but it appears to me that Rhodes hasn't found a natural striker partner in all the time he's been here.

I'd be concerned to just effectively swap Rhodes for Graham without significantly strengthening the midfield.

We need to be bringing in players of character with a real work ethic and a winning mentality to gee up whoever stays at the Club. Something Bowyer signally failed to do.

Never heard of this Bennett lad. Thought he must be a young lad but turns out he is 27. Still, Lambert signed him at Norwich in 2011. This is a quote at the time.

Norwich boss Paul Lambert said: "He's a young and exciting player with plenty of pace. He can play in a wide position or in behind the forwards - he's a quick lad and he's got a winning mentality. He played his full part in what Brighton achieved last season and that desire to succeed will stand him in good stead here."

Sounds what we need, tempered by the fact he hasn't done much except trot out on loan.

Undisclosed fee apparently, I'd guess it wasn't much though considering his contract was coming up.

Blackburn Rovers. Closing in on two deals. Danny Graham thing progressing. And a winger. Name hopefully in paper tomorrow.

From Alan Nixon

Not sure on either really. Graham needs to be brought in to partner Rhodes not to replace, or we screwed.

Literally know nothing of Bennett.

What's Danny Graham's record like in the Championship? Has he scored goals at this level?

For Watford a while back yeah. Think that prompted his move to Swansea when they first went up.

Not so much recently though..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Graham_(footballer)#Career_statistics

Can't say I'm elated over the prospect of late 20's journeymen like Bennett and Graham, although they at least fit the profiles of pacy winger and powerful striker that we desperately need.

Transfer dealings is actually my main concern about Lambert, as we've switched from a coach who regularly found good players on a shoestring budget to a manager who's transfer record is spotty at best. The successes he has had in that department are usually younger players plucked from relative obscurity (Holt, John Ruddy, Russel Martin, Ryan Bennett), but Bennett and Graham hardly matches that profile.

"BLACKBURN Rovers could be set to hijack Bristol City's move for Elliott Bennett, according to the Daily Mail.

The Norwich City wing-back, who has been a shining light in a struggling Robins side while on loan at the club, is reportedly in discussions with Rovers and could link up with old manager Paul Lambert at Ewood Park"

From Bristol post, their fans seem to be annoyed he's coming to us.

Played every game for them, been subbed quite a few times though but he seems to be one of their better players this season looking at the reaction.

Hang on... Are we signing Bennett on a permanent or is it a loan?

Andy Cryer seems pretty peeved on Twitter;

And because we have no clue - Eliot Bennett won't be coming back. We had months to sort that out.

Is Bennett left or right sided? Sounds like this one is more likely than most that have been mentioned.

Also, I just can't see us selling Rhodes with Graham as the replacement. People seem to think this is the case because Graham is on big wages at Sunderland, but that doesn't add up to me. Why sell a striker who scores goals (albeit going through a rough patch lately) and bring in a striker who hasn't scored goals consistently for a few years now? If anything we need to offload a couple of the donkey backup strikers and bring in more capable strikers to play alongside JR. I would be ok with Graham up top with Rhodes but not to replace him.

Elliott Bennett is a winger known to Lambert from his Norwich days and is currently on loan at Bristol city til January and Marvin Emnes who is never PL quality cant get a game at Swansea can be a right handful with pace to Burn and Kevin Foley who is a very experienced right back at this level currently in Denmark

I wonder if both deals for Graham and possible Bennett are perm deals.

According to Transfermarkt, Bennett is out of contract this summer.

Maybe Graham is aswell

I suggestion Bennett name a week or two ago.

think i can trump you Chaddy lol :tu:

Lambert has to get some of his own guys in to play more the way he wants and basically just freshen things up. They might not appear to be much better than what we have but they may be a bit different and we are only able to operate in that kind of market anyway, average players and possible potential.

What's blindingly obvious is things need changing and ramping up a bit so some fresh blood is the way forwards. If we were in the top 6 I'd be yelling for quality loans from Prem clubs but it's unlikely we have that budget at the min anyway.

Having said that we must keep our decent ones and try and bolt on to them. No more of this replacing with cheaper options that's got us in this position in the first flerking place.

Venkys take note.
