Was told today that Aiden mcgeady is a dead cert to join us. Don't know how much truth in it but he seemed pretty adamant

. As much as exciting it would be to sign him , there is at least 4 or 5 other positions we need filling before another winger ... A right back , at least 1 centre mid (possibly 2) 1 forward (again possibly 2) and if I'm being really greedy another centre half.

Oh and btw , signing Danny Graham might not be as cut and dried as we thought , I'm hearing there's another championship club in for him too

Can't blame any players for leaving during the time Anderson and Kean had a stranglehold on the club. The stink surrounding that entire situation was not something any player would choose to be a part of. The only ones that stayed were those who couldn't get better deals elsewhere, Kean loyalists (usually brought in by him, but some who were using his inexperience to further their own prospects), and youngsters who were just trying to make a name for themselves.

Judging by Hoilett's career trajectory post-Rovers it's fair to say we got the best of him, he's now on the same path as the likes of David Bentley.

Aye they were putting it about that he was offered a stupid amount that would have made him our highest paid player. I wonder how much of it that pair of chuunts wanted though !

I don't know if he is a dingle fan, he used to play for their youth team. Good player though, kind of player we need.

Just checked. Definitely a dingle - shame.

At risk of getting abuse. I do not give a monkeys toss if he is a dingle, nob ender or not lob. If he can play football with some pace he is welcome. I remember Wally Joyce a dingle of the first degree but when playing for us gave everything. Not the most tallented footballer but gave everything. Cannot ask anything more.

He's a dingle fan from Bacup isn't he? Can't see him coming here on that basis!

This really made me giggle, for so many reasons. He grew up living near to a relative of mine.

Hates Rovers (in the usual ways)

I can't see Bournemouth parting with him, but if they did there's a few clubs higher placed than us ;)

Good point. Adam Blacklaw the same. And Connelly, even though I thought he was hopeless!

Newton gave his all when he went the other way for that matter.

In any case getting a good player who used to play for Burnley is getting one over on them isn't it?

Some very interesting names available in the summer who are out of contract.
We could dramatically improve the quality of our squad for a decent wage in the summer.

Sam Byram - RB/RW. Only 22.
Chris Gunter - Could become the 1st team RB we all want. Plenty of Championship experience. Only 26.
Alexander Kačaniklić - Left winger who can also play as a creative center midfielder. Has played at Championship level and out on loan at reasonable level. Only 24.
Yun Suk-young - Tall South Korean International Left Back. Only 25.
Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson - Talented Forward and Winger. Only 24.
David Wheater - One of the better defenders at Bolton which is saying something. Can play CB/RB. 28.
Emerson Hyndman - USA central midfielder. Only 19. Highly rated. Fulham in transfer embargo so need to sell.

In fact all the players listed above are at teams that cannot really afford to pay their wage and giving them a new contract will only deepen the transfer embargoes.

All available on a free come the Summer. All have Championship experience.

Thoughts?

Some rovers fans on here are delusional. Sam byram, crouch, mcgeady and bamford are all on the last couple of pages. What planet are you on to think they would sign for rovers in this window or the next. I would be very surprised if you can afford to pay them let alone tempt them to a team that is a lower championship team (at present - which I can't see changing for the rest of this season.

I would just be looking to get a couple of players of the standard of Bennett, who is the right age and callibre of signing you can get in. Then in the summer look for some decent free l transfers. Would also look to sell Rhodes if the money could be reinvested in a couple of good championship players.

No need to be rude! You never know until you ask!!

Though I imagine Byram is pie in the sky and off to the PL! Bamford and Crouch would only be loans and if there were no offers from higher placed clubs, why not?

Is anyone else concerned that a major summer overhaul will only lead to more excuses about the side needing time to gel etc? The more I think about it the more I fear this could be another 2 or 3 year project for lambert. Let's be perfectly honest, it would be incredible if he managed to bring in 4 or 5 players in the summer and forge the side into promotion candidates. A huge ask imo. We could really do with signing a couple this window which can form the spine of the side for next year.

We're out of the embargo and have very rich owners. From this Summer the threshold for FFP is increased to 13m a year and the checks are done over 3 years instead of one. We may or may not throw a wad of cash at getting promoted this Summer, but it isn't beyond us and would make sense as the reason that Paul Lambert and his team are here. If we want to have a good go at it next year, we have the money and we have the manager, facilities and recent(ish) Premier League history to attract good Championship / lower PL players. If the likes of 'Boro, Derby and yourselves can have aspirations to sign people like Bamford, Ince, Darren Bent, etc. then we most definitely can. Don't think that because we've been struggling with an embargo for 18 months and no actual manager for nearly 5 years that we are suddenly one of the Yeovils of this world.

I agree but I'm not overly concerned. The January market is notoriously hard to do well in. If the right players are available to loan with a view to buy then great. If not then consolidate and go back in the summer.

The best teams in that league are made up of decent players with 4/5 top ones. We are missing 2/3 of those (I believe Rhodes and Hanley prob fall into that category in the champ)

If you look at Derby and Boro, they bought 2/3 players for decent fees (£2-5m) and the rest were relatively cheap.

Looking at the squad we have and PL's vision so far I believe Hanley, Duffy, Conway, Rhodes and now Bennett are completely safe. The likes of Steele, Marshall and Evans are more than capable of forming a team around better players but can be improved upon over time. Which leaves us with three top players needed to improve the first XI (Bradley Johnson, Ince, Nugent types).

Then I'd use the young lads (Nyambe, Lenihan, Tomlinson etc) plus some cheaper gems or even freebies from the above list to pad the squad out. Maybe keep Kilgallon.

The rest, just move out, loan out or whatever...

As above, the game changes significantly next season in terms of being able to spend. I know that Venkys don't mind spending money!! We'll see!

I think it's a huge question now.

Undoubtedly, Lambert's appointment was made because the V's thought a late top six charge was within our grasp.

Sadly, at this time, things have barely improved and if we are being honest, don't look like improving between now and the season's end.

Where does that leave V's ?

I feel pretty sure that when they sanctioned Lambert's appointment, it was their last throw of the dice thinking they would 'risk' another £20m if it gave them half a chance to recoup the other £140m+ that's disappeared down the toilet.

If things haven't clearly improved come the end of the season, I think V's will seriously feel that they have a huge listing oil tanker heading for the rocks, and one that can't be patched and turned round. Very sadly, they might decide it's time to cut their losses and scuttle the ship.

How's Ben Marshalls medical coming along ? Oh and that record bid for Jordan Rhodes ? :D

I'm just amazed at how quickly other teams sign players, and not any players but actually good players on low fees or loans. I'm not talking just about this season, but for many years, and yet Rovers somehow end up with absolute rubbish at times.

Good call on Sigurdarson. When he broke through here in Norway I thought he would go on to great things. Had a bit of everything, good pace, power, stamina and finishing. Seems like he never lived up to his potential, but worth a punt as a squad player. His good work rate would endear him to the fans.

There are many facets of a signing, loan or otherwise. Deals that look cheap on paper are often far from it. Loan signings are generally very expensive in the short term with lots of hidden unreported fees added in. Some of the signing bonuses that lower league players get are obscene.

Yes, all of that is possible and I guess we will find out..

BUT the appointment of Lambert, even more so the way in which they appointed Lambert and his staff smelled of something resembling organisation...even vision?

I can't believe Lambert promised them promotion this season. Similarly I can't see him taking the job without the promise of serious funds.
