Plenty of Sheffield Wednesday supporters getting very giddy about things at the moment. I suppose when you spend almost an entire generation in decline and lolloping around in the Third Division and the lower reaches of the Second it's to be expected that the first signs of improvement are heralded as some sort of rebirth. Same nonsense crops up every time Forest or Leeds have a decent run.

How long have Wednesday been in the top six this season?

How much has their 'mega rich' fishmonger spent on new signings since he arrived? Talking about spending big is cheap.

We have had 5 seasons of constant improvement and things are looking up. I wouldn't describe Wednesday fans as giddy, we are just a bit optimistic about the team we have, the style of play and the people we are buying.

Spending money isn't what we are just doing, not like Derby or boro. We have only paid fees for hunt and forestieri from the team that started on Tuesday night. We have signed some good frees (bannan, Wallace and Lee) and used the loan market well (pudil, hooper and sasso). This is what rovers should be doing, as you try to live within your means - which i hope you can.

I think that's really interesting and quite insightful. On the other hand, @#/? off.

To be fair to Wednesday fans they've had a pretty @#/? time of it over the last 18 yrs or so. It's no wonder they are getting a bit excited at the merest sniff of doing well. Give us another few years and we'll be getting excited at finishing tenth

Interesting post Whatdial - for what it is worth, I think you will come close but probably fail in the playoffs this year. I'm glad you are having a resurgence though because you lot have gone through a similar fall from grace yourselves.

Think back (if you are old enough) to when you had David Hirst, Sheridan, Palmer, Warhurst, Trevor Francis, Chris Woods, Pearson etc, then compare them with some of the dross you will have seen over the last 10 years. It takes some getting accustomed to.

We have had 5 seasons of constant decline and dismantling of what was a Premier League squad and club. We have seen some very good players depart, not to mention watching the likes of Bellamy, Benni Mccarthy, Tugay etc not so long ago. It is hard not to consider players that we could have easily signed 3 years ago.

We presently have a squad of mainly spineless individuals, with little ability and even less affinity for our club. These were assembled by 'rookie managers trying to follow a mandate of buying players to make a profit

Our 'means' are very poor. We would really struggle to compete in this league now, without the 20 million or so each year that the owners are covering.

Our pulling power has gone. An average player, given the choice of Rovers or Wednesday would no doubt choose you at this present time.

So how do we address this imbalance? We do what we did years ago - appoint a decent manager and then throw some money at it. After all, its how we won the Premier league! Players these days won't come to a Rovers or a Wednesday because of who we are - it will be because of the wage/deal on the table. We need some quality to get us back up there and that costs. The manager has indicated that this summer will be a 'massive' window for us - whether the club/owners deliver on that is another matter.

Just watching Millwall v Oxford in the Football League Trophy. Oxford (League Two) and Millwall (League One).

Oxford look very good and have played very well so far (72 mins).

I wonder if we could sign their whole starting eleven?

Oh for Appleton's team to have played like that the last time he went to the New Den in a cup match!

I also heard the commentators say that Oxford were pretty dire in the first few months of Appleton's reign until he had the chance to bring his own players in and develop his own style. It had a ring of recognition about it!

No need to be rude! You never know until you ask!!

Though I imagine Byram is pie in the sky and off to the PL! Bamford and Crouch would only be loans and if there were no offers from higher placed clubs, why not?

Yes Byram seems to be on his way to Everton (BBC and Guardian claim differing figures of 4 and 5 million) though West Ham may attempt to derail that bid. Not exactly unfair for someone to state Byram to Rovers was a delusional suggestion.

That cup tie was the worst I've ever seen two professional teams perform on a pitch for 90 minutes. "Awful" doesn't even begin to cover it.

It was a p not an f. That was being nice. Go enjoy some modicum of success. Coming on here just makes you look like a tw#t. And that was an a not an i.

Are you being serious? This isn't the first time he's come on this messageboard and he's not once said anything wrong, nothing wrong with the odd discussion with other fans lighten up Patrick mate. On Wednesday one of my friends I went to uni with was a Wednesday fan so I do take a bit of an interest in how they are doing, good luck to them they are playing a good style of football and have made some good signings. Let's hope we'll be feeling the same at this point next season!

Some very interesting names available in the summer who are out of contract.

We could dramatically improve the quality of our squad for a decent wage in the summer.

Sam Byram - RB/RW. Only 22.

Chris Gunter - Could become the 1st team RB we all want. Plenty of Championship experience. Only 26.

Alexander Kačaniklić - Left winger who can also play as a creative center midfielder. Has played at Championship level and out on loan at reasonable level. Only 24.

Yun Suk-young - Tall South Korean International Left Back. Only 25.

Björn Bergmann Sigurðarson - Talented Forward and Winger. Only 24.

David Wheater - One of the better defenders at Bolton which is saying something. Can play CB/RB. 28.

Emerson Hyndman - USA central midfielder. Only 19. Highly rated. Fulham in transfer embargo so need to sell.

In fact all the players listed above are at teams that cannot really afford to pay their wage and giving them a new contract will only deepen the transfer embargoes.

All available on a free come the Summer. All have Championship experience.

Thoughts?

Hyndman is supposed to be out of contract in the summer and has reportedly already made it known that he wants to leave. It would be interesting if they try to cash in now instead of waiting for a compensation arrangement later.

Speaking of American central midfielders, I wonder where Jermaine Jones will end up. He apparently felt lowballed to return to MLS and did not sign in Mexico. I wonder if he would return to Europe on a short term basis even though he moved his family to the United States.

Not sure how people think Graham wouldn't be a marked improvement on what we've currently got.

His career is an improvement on Koita and Delfy, that is pretty obvious.

Was a good player in the Championship. Let's hope he can rekindle that.

Not the classiest of responses. We are not kids, we do have the intelligence to take other genuine fans opinion.

The lad always speaks sense.

Am I the only one not too fussed about not signing anybody now? Think we have a squad better than 3 or 4 other teams, so should stay up.

But it's the New campaign, that I'm looking forward to if we stick with Lambert.
