From those 1987 photos, who remembers June Birkett who used to stand on the Riverside with her rattle? She'd well and truly been hit with the 'ugly stick.' Apologies to any of her family who may post on here! The lass with the glasses, behind her on the same photo, was a Darrener if I remember correctly.

A memorable game indeed but didn't the Argyle fans arrive mostly via Arnold Wallace coaches which I think had done a deal for the game that day packing the entire Ewood car park.

Loads arrived on a train that brought them into Blackburn at 8.00am. That was the reason that they ended up trashing the town centre. I am sure plenty arrived by coach too, but there was definitely an early morning train.

It was an overnight train. I've mentioned this before but my mate was helping his dad prepare the meat at the family's Little Harwood butchers. He rang me at something like 7am to say there were Plymouth fans everywhere.

I thought as much and thanks for clearing it up.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

Me and my mates played football here the day the painter man came and did the prices on the wall....Iwas there the day that sign went up....lived down the road.

I always remember in the summer the old painter man in his white coat would come and change the prices on the wall at the turnstile....happy days

Some of his blue and white signs are still on the walls, on the concourse at the back of the Riverside.

Suppose this could also have gone in one of Preston Blue's recent threads...

Rovers have consistently been innovators since the foundation of English football...is this another first?

I think that story is quite misleading and unfair, once again making football supporters the scapegoats. I presume it refers to the same story that was in the Lancashire Telegraph the other week about the councils attempts to bring in special measures around Ewood. This isn't just in relation to Ewood Park, but the whole area, with concerns about fly tipping, dumping, vandalism, urination/defecation in public places and allowing animals to roam the streets. The majority of these issues take place all week every week and not just during 3-4 hours one Saturday every fortnight.

I've been going to Ewood Park for more than 20 years and have never witnessed anyone urinating in the street around the ground.

Then again if the council hadn't closed down all public toilets in the region in an attempt to save money perhaps people wouldn't need to go in the street.

Once again football supporters are being tarred as some sort of evil people who behave like animals when the real people responsible for the mess around the Ewood area are the people who take part in fly tipping, rubbish dumping and animal exercising on public land (I think we know who I'm talking about here).

Wrong interpretation.

The byelaw mentions keeping horses and flytipping. Look towards the canal for the intended target.

After all the money and effort gone into the Ewood area to modernise it with more mad road systems etc it's about time they moved the pikeys somewhere else.

They are supposed to be travellers right ? Well get them travelling.........

Isn't that a permanent site for them now? Sure I read that somewhere. As you say, the antithesis of travellers though......

Yeah it probably is but I'm sure they could find them somewhere else. Talk about an eyesore, it'll cost the council / authorities more to try and keep enforcing the new laws that it would to move them probably.

That's been a permanent site for the best part of 40 years. The Gypsy Warden used to come under my remit when I worked for Blackburn Council. One time, when the Warden was off sick, I had to go round and collect their rents etc. I inadvertently killed one of their dogs that had been cruelly locked in an electric meter cupboard. The poor wee thing jumped out as I unlocked the cupboard to read the meter and I instinctively kicked out as - frankly - I sh@t myself, and caught the dog right under the chin. It died instantly and I can tell you, that took some explaining. I think there were about 12 caravans and only 2 or 3 family names.

Probably originated from the Easter Fair and Pot Fair that still pitched up at Ewood every year at that time.

Yeah I've seen complaints about the most blatant eyesore. It might have been this thread but people talked about the stadium itself recently. Mould on the windows for instance and it really shows apathy at every working level of the club. Walking through Ewood isn't exactly like the middle of Chelsea but the stadium at least should be maintained perfectly.

Never seen that around Ewood either JH. Sure older fans on here probably been unlucky enough to encounter it on the old terraces by people who were too drunk to see (or care) what they were doing!

Yeah should have noted its the council's "pee exclusion zone" not Rovers behind it.
