[Archived] Danny Graham Signs

Recommended Posts

Paying £10k p/w for Koita was ridiculous, let's be clear on that. It's not a comparison point worth making.

Ipswich don't have a single player on anything over £10k p/w and they're in roughly the same amount of debt as us. It won't take much for us to fall back into an embargo if we start splurging wages on ex-Premier League players after one last pay day, and do we really want to increase the speed with which we're piling up debt? Putting Graham on £20k p/w, as an example, would assumedly make him much better paid than the majority of our squad. Do we really want to go down the route of having certain players earning much more than others? It can only breed resentment, and if team harmony is what Lambert is going for it can't be allowed to happen.

I'm not sure why you state Koita's wage isn't a point worth making.

Facts are that 20k a week isn't a lot of money for a free transfer, experienced, ex-£5million player. You only need to see the wages to turnover percentage figures to work out that the going rate here is much higher than sub 10k wages. If Ipswich don't have anyone above 10k a week then that's great for them, although ultimately they have spent a lifetime in the Championship and will have filtered high earners out but are still left with a squad not good enough to have got them promotion - so bit of a catch 22 situation.

At Rovers, players who have signed contract extensions such as Hanley, Lowe, Evans, Conway and Marshall etc. will be on a lot more than 10k a week.

What I'd give to be a 10k a week squad filler!

Mainly because it's a wage only a fool or an extremely inexperienced manager would have paid somebody like Koita. As we now have Lambert in charge that's not something we need to worry about. What we absolutely don't want is aging players on big wages. I'd prefer to see us go down the route of a younger target with potential than the likes of Graham, who is coming to the end of his career and in terms of goals has been winding down accordingly.

Of course, he could have a Daryl Murphy wonder season next season, but the difference is Daryl Murphy wasn't being paid £20k + p/w...

You only read the headline, didn't you? :P

How misleading is that! I even read the article and still didn't grasp that it wasn't him. It doesn't help having a big picture of Blackburns Danny Graham in the article!

From what I have seen I would also sign him if the deal is right.

Granted I've only seen him once but it was a cracking all round performance against Fulham.

Ive seen one live and the other 2 on Rovers player. Bonus of being having Rovers player.

If you have a different opinion then please share with me?

My opinion is non scoring average workhorse who at best needs to be the foil to take the pressure off a goalscorer. An upgrade on Brown but thats about it.Would only sign him if he were free and on cheap wages.

The guy does at least seem to be trying to earn a contract and from what other clubs fans say he's usually a grafter. Just what kind of contract he'll want though after being on 35k pwk is interesting. Surely we shouldn't be handing out deals of more than 15k pwk to his type these days.

Not quite sure what people are expecting of any striker at this level, but if we can get him on a lot less than what he's been on at Sunderland and a free transfer, he's got the pedigree at this level. In any case, assuming we get some better players in the summer to help him out more it could be a shrewd bit of business. Even if we do sign him, we'd need to sign more than one other striker!

As it stands, there won't be a single recognised striker in the first-team this summer. Like Khod said, if Graham joins permanently that doesn't mean he's going to become our main frontman.

If his wages aren't a stumbling block, I'd have no problem with signing him. He's an experienced striker at this level, has a decent strike-rate, and he leads the line well.

A few games on and this view is strengthened tenfold

Changed your mind yet Rev?

Agreed. His all round play is fantastic. Reminds me of Newell. A must keep.

JAL, Rev - are you still of the same opinion that you kindly shared earlier in this thread?

Looks like there's a large case of egg on face early on in this thread, long may it continue.

I must say Danny Graham has been very good in every game I've seen him in so far and has been the main ingredient in our upturn in form.

There's no point trying to get people to admit they were wrong on this or Lambert's score, as I said before on another thread, where does it end? We might as well just focus on the present rather than the BRFCC obsession of being proven right. The fortunes of the club are way more important than whoever was right or wrong from behind a keyboard/phone at one point in their life. :rover:
