[Archived] Rhodes To Boro

Lambert's statement today, particularly the last sentence, seems a pretty clear indication that Rhodes won't be walking back into the team anytime soon and is likely to be spending time on the bench, although I doubt he'll be in the squad for the trip to Middlesbrough. Sadly, it completely scuppers Lambert's plans to rebuild the squad to mount a promotion challenge whilst remaining within the FFP rules. It really is a no win situation for the club. Stuck with a player who wants to be elsewhere and who doesn't feature in the manager's plans for the future.

With JR on the bench, being a pro he will be chomping at the bit

Will it make him run any faster ?

We'd be pretty foolish to take him up to ' Boro at the weekend. Why give them an angle to motivate their players and fans ?

Watt can do the running,

JR will be more fired up than the boro throw backs

When I see quotes like that I shake my head. Why should anybody do all the running for a guy who's probably getting paid three times more than Watt ? If you think most players don't think like that you're fooling yourself.

No need to shake you head, it was more a reference to the type of player Watts is, a great foil for JR I would say.

JR is still the most prolific striker in this league, great asset I would say,

you know what ABBEY would say about it :)

Hmmm. It may be a natural reaction to give JR the cold shoulder if is his fault. But not the smart reaction. Does Lambert have the subtle man-management skills needed now? Must keep JR onside to get the best out of him for the team and to keep him in the shop window for the best financial interests of the club if we are to sell him in the summer. At the same time, keep new players happy.

PL isn't going to come out and say we don't need the JR cash to rebuild. I still think regardless of JR cash or not we'll see some proper activity in the summer, PL wouldn't have taken the job without that assurance. I believe he wants JR out for technical reasons.

We ain't going up this season even if we sign Messi and Ronaldo.

Almost certainly it does wreck tomorrow's transfer business because of FFP.

Of course Rhodes has to win his way back into the team after the Oxford showing but I don't see PL being vindictive about it- Rhodes for sure has another ten goals in him in the rest of the season.

Pretty sure he didn't mean this season.

Yeah bloody Platini...

NO WAY!!!

I agree. Why should our club lose out because of greedy players/ agents or other Clubs dragging their feet. For once we've done nothing wrong in this scenario. If Rhodes wants a move badly enough he needs to lower his demands. I think ' Boro have belatedly done their sums and worked out Rhodes isn't worth that sort of money.

How anyone cannot rate a goalscorer is beyond me

Round and round and round we go. How did we score 3 goals yesterday while our goalscorer was away having a medical in Middlesboro ?

We need to remember here Lambert's comments a week or two ago about doing limited, sensible business in January with a view to a major overhaul in the summer and signing some 'big hitters'. He was clearly under the impression when making those comments that there would be significant resources at his disposal. Now he would have been premature and fairly naive to promise an overhaul in the summer if that could only happen IF a club made a decent bid for Rhodes and IF Rhodes agreed to the move. Too many ifs, buts and maybes there. What IF Rhodes had broke his leg at Charlton last week? No money for Rovers for a very long time.

As for this theory that the only chance we have of spending money and strengthening seriously is by selling Rhodes asap, then I'd like to draw people's attentions to Middlesbrough. A prime example of a club no bigger than ours with similar revenues who have managed to ride roughshod over FFP rules and have spent huge sums of money over the last 3 years and were very close to a deal worth in excess of £10 million for a player many on here seem to now consider inferior to Simeon Jackson!

Rhodes has shown repeatedly that despite relentless speculation in the media, that he is a professional and will give it his all. We need him to because we're in a relegation dogfight and as per 3 seasons ago his contribution COULD be the difference between us being in League One and the Championship next season.

As impressed as I was with our performance as a team yesterday, I'm going to wait a few weeks before hailing a great new system that will see all our problems solved. We beat Oxford United of the 4th division with a pretty much full strength side. If we do the same to Middlesbrough on Saturday then perhaps I'll start to come round to the idea that Rhodes isn't needed and we can progress in the league without relying on him, but in the likely event we struggle for points over the next few weeks whilst facing some of the better teams in this league we are going to need all the quality we can get, including the help of our top scorer.

What a strange situation, I wonder what on earth is going through Jordans mind right now.

He surely has to go back tomorrow and agree to Boros terms for his and Rovers sake. How can PL build a team around a player who wants to leave?

He hasn't said that at all, good deal if agreed yes but we' are pound store so if anyone wants to buy Jordan they pay full price. Simple as that!!

Him returning and blocking the manager's plans is the worst case scenario for us.

It's about us improving our team, if we have to lose a million on Rhodes to do that then so be it.

He has said we should have sold him 3 windows ago, he clearly doesn't rate him. Throw in Mani's info and the picture is clear.
