Talking to some Latics fans they reckon he's as soft as the proverbial and can't tackle to save his life but can pick a pass out of nothing and has an eye for goal. They reckon we've not seen passing like it, oh how I laughed at the poor deluded fools, then I remembered they would've been in division 4 or something when we had Tuguy cutting teams apart with a mere look glance of an eye.

Lol, but I'm fairly sure Tugay would have played against them a good few times for us.

Could be a Smartprice Savage and Tugay. It's gonna be interesting to find out. Just glad to have someone who can put their foot on the ball and pass it about a bit. Might not have to punt it straight it up to strikers head / chest as much now!

Gomez signing (and watt) points towards a different style - much appreciated from where I was sitting. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to implement.

Wonderful signing, 11 goals and 9 assists in 46 matches last time he was in the championship, he should add creativity and goals from midfield, but how will he fit in and what formation will PL play?

I like the idea of trying something like..

Graham

Gomez Watt Conway

Akpan Evans

? Ward Hanley Marshall

Steele

Would need a new left back though, Spurr just does not have the pace to fit into that lineup and Henley imo is not good enough.

Anyone else think Spurr's going to get a new deal? If he does a half-decent job till now and the end of the season, I can see Lambert keeping him on as a squad player. For me, that would be the lazy option. There's no reason to keep an average plodder like Spurr when we could free up his wage for someone else. Personally I'd get rid and use Henley as backup.

I wouldn't mind having Spurr as backup. He looked decent for us until his injury and extended period out.

I'd get rid of Kilgallon in the summer and have Spurr cover both left back and the fourth centre back position. It's a bit of a waste to have four dedicated centre backs at this level, it's not a position you want to rotate in like the rest of the field. Having Spurr cover two positions could allow us to bring in an extra creative player.

Obviously a class player at this level, but I'm somewhat concerned about how Lambert will use him. The amount of strikers he's brought in suggests he will play a 4-4-2, but does Gomez really have a place in that formation? Bowyer's reign proved pretty decisively that we leak too many goals with a midfield diamond.

Can't remember which thread I posted it but my mate who's a Wiganer recons he'll be the equivalent to what Hoolahan was to him at Norwich.

A few people have said the same. This was years ago. Spurr has been pish-poor for a good couple of years now. He's older, slower and worse than ever. Needs shifting.

He's spent a lot of time out injured - I'd be prepared to see him given a bit more of a chance again before completely writing him off.

I think we will play a pressing 442. Like this.

---------------Steele

Henley----Hanley----Ward----Spurr

Marshall---Gomez---Evans----Conway

-----------Watt----Jackson

Having so much pace will put oppo on the back foot and we will try and control games through Gomez.

Ideally I would have preferred a good rw to come in and move Marsh to right back, and get in a decent lb, but the wondow has been okay.

Never been a fan of him tbh but he's been off the boil whenever I've seen him play. For an already slow player to suffer such muscle injuries, it's gonna be hard for him to get back to the level he was at pre-injury. I'd bet he doesn't reach those dizzy heights again. Spurr is never going to be good enough for a team with ambitions of finishing above mid-table. He might work hard and be a nice lad but he's not good enough - too slow, poor passing, poor movement, no good on the ball. We can and MUST do better...

As for Gomez, little worried about his lack of strength and whether his legs are up to it but it'll be nice to see a midfielder who can pass the ball that's for sure.

Not a chance that Graham will be on the bench if fit, otherwise probably about right (maybe Akpan for Evans).

I've never rated Lowe as a midfield player especially as a " destroyer " . He's too impulsive and is too easily drawn to the ball in heavy traffic. That's when he gets easily by passed. You need to know " when to stick and when to twist " in that position and he doesn't. For me his best games have come at right back where he has a clearly defined role and the play is almost always in front of him.

We didn't sign Gomez to tackle players any more than we signed Dunny, Berkovic, Bohinen for their tackling skills. He's there to get the ball from our danger zone to their danger zone in a controlled manner. We need him to distribute the ball skilfully and carefully, not in the completely mindless and obvious fashion that has become the norm at Ewood. We've got plenty of spear carriers to play behind him in midfield.

I agree Spurr looks to be the weak link at full back but he's even worse at centre half. You need four recognised centre halves in the squad these days.

Graham and Watt will certainly be the first choice partnership up front, Jackson is the impact sub for sure, which seems like a decent set up. Let's just hope Graham and Watt hit it off up there together. On paper they could complement each other quite well.

Gomez could end up being the most important player on the pitch for us now as he will be the link between midfield and attack.

My team for Sat.

Steele

Marshall

Hanley ( capt )

Ward

Spurr

Bennett

Akpan

Conway

Gomez

Graham

Watt

Subs

Goalie

Evans

Duffy

Jackson

Henley

Lenihan

Williamson

That's been a hard selection. A big part of me says we should go with the team that won at Oxford but we're desperate for a passing player in midfield and someone like Graham to hold the ball up down their end. That's not really Jackson's game.

I've given Bennett one last roll of the dice on the assumption he's got to be better than his performances have suggested up to now.

I've got a feeling that he may form a good partnership with Marshall.

Williamson's in because I'm not familiar with any other reserves that might deserve a trip to get their lungs ruined up there.

Or possibly

Steele

Marshall. Hanley. Ward. Spurr

Evans. Akpan. Conway.

Gomez

Watt. Graham

Hopefully with the RB & LB overlapping when they can, probably more so Marshall than Spurr. I heard Gomez wasn't that good in the tackle, but is a master at passing and feeding through balls, so might work in the hole feeding the strikers.

Definitely more options now and a better looking bench. If there's goals in the team we are looking not bad.

Edit: Just seen Tyrones pick, similar idea.

I could go with Evans out there instead of Bennett, slightly more defensive but maybe that's what is required. He can give Marshall licence to get forward a bit more.
