[Archived] West Ham United - Fa Cup 5Th Round

Recommended Posts

Been getting lots of emails from the local cinema recently. Gave in and went to watch a film there eventually. Sadly, the film was a pirate version. Grainy and wobbly.Sound not great either. Mentioned it to the manager afterwards. He asked me what my problem was, you saw the advertised film, didn't you? then unbelievably he said anyway it was my fault. The cinema had fallen on hard times. If i had bothered to go along more often with some mates, they could make more money and, given time, say by the summer, I could maybe see a better version. Thought that was a bit bizarre.

Walking out bumped into some mates in the foyer. didn't want to spoil their evening but said the picture quality was a bit flaky and they might want to think about paying to see it. Surprisingly, without me realising, they said they had been going along every couple of weeks or so already and knew about the 'issues'. they said they didn't really mind paying good money to see the film as going to the cinema was more of a social occasion for them anyway. I thought that was a bit odd. I can see why the manager isn't bothered about the quality of the film.

Then, left my mates, walking to the car park I saw the manager. Getting into a car, Mercedes C class. with a gorgeous girl probably half his age, laughing and joking around. Something's not right round here, I thought to myself, pockets empty with that Alice through the looking glass feeling and half expecting to see caterpillars on mushrooms smoking pipes.

Couldn't agree more Jim. When did Dougie or Clayton need to be rested? - and they were playing at a time when pitches were mud heaps and refs gave them no protection at all. What baffles me about yesterday is resting players for the game against Derby. I would have thought next weeks clash with MK Dons is far more important and if Lambert wanted to rest his players then why not put out the strongest team yesterday and then give them a week's rest before the MK Dons game. It's all very well the manager saying that he wanted a packed Ewood Park for yesterday's game but when he then sends out a weakened team and bleats about how he'd prefer to lose than have a replay is it any wonder that the fans stay away.

When did Dalglish rest players ?

Shearer nevet missed a game unless injured ...

This is late. It's all been said and chewed over. Just one thing, though.

At 90 minutes we had lost the tie 4-1. I was sick in the stomach. A minimum of 2 minutes was announced. Our defence had the ball but, instead of passing to the keeper and trying to keep possession and not threaten West Ham anymore so as to limit further damage, they play it forward and lose possession for the umpteenth time. That 5th goal was like a punch to my already sick stomach.

Collectively the team hasn't got a footballing brain cell between them.

Was Ward captain? He is worse than Killa. If he is an example of what Lambert will bring in in the summer God help us.

It is being shown again on Rovers Player for anyone who wants to watch it for some reason. Payments for Rovers Player go to FL Interactive Limited so clearly the football league take their cut. Wonder how the FA Cup rights for Rovers player are worked out? Especially for games which were televised and the new matches are added the following day. Not sure if they showed Premier League matches again and those games (and full games prior to last season) have been removed.

Most of the websites are still using the same skin too. I believe the initial deal was signed in 2000 and Rovers said they couldn't change the look of the site because of that. If the deal had expired by 2011 (not sure but might have read it was 10 years contract and don't know if there was a buyout option) clearly Venkys didn't care and I doubt they even know about it. Doubt they would have stopped Lee Grooby, etc just going ahead with it anyway.

We had to protect lads who were carrying little knocks, and Danny and Matty couldnt play due to being cup tied. - Soundy Bowyery :)

It's just how managers aka people speak.

I used to love telling people to stop going overboard on interviews, not.

Clubs have no choice but to use the FL interative site, its part of their contract with the FL. Clubs dont even upload and manage the sites themselves they just give over the content.

A small minority of clubs are exempt from this though. Fulham are one, Leeds I think also, Portsmouth used to be but aren't any more. Not sure how many others that have their own independent website formats which are far better than the garbage format Rovers and most others put up with.

Only clubs that were in the Football League around 2000 when the PremierTV or whatever it's called was first brought in seem still to be tied to it.

Though saying that, Fulham were with us at that time...

I thought you said you'd calmed down? Why sack Lambert because we lost yesterday? Who would you get instead? What would they do with the players we have? Win more games? I don't think so as general consensus is that the majority of players are not very good to rubbish. Yesterday didn't matter in real terms. It might be about pride and bragging rights for us so it hurts but for footballers it's just another match, one they would have liked to have won, because that's what they like doing. It's not a disgrace to lose to West Ham at the moment. It will be a disgrace if we lose to MK Dons at the weekend.

No, I said calmed down enough to comment. Yeah I was angry, mad that he put out a soft side. Over react, yeah, I did

Its a strange one, as there are only 3-4 clubs that I've come across in the Football League at present that don't seem to be tied into the same system as Rovers. Quite how/why those few are able to do it independently I'm not sure,

I would think in todays day and age of internet use that Premier League/Championship clubs would have grown frustrated with the constraints of this system and found a way to break free and do their own thing. Having a website that is easy to use and suits the people running the clubs media department I would imagine is imperative these days. I think the format is very dated and in urgent need of an overhaul. It doesn't seem to have been changed very much at all in the last 5-10 years. One example is the low resolution images, so when the club puts a match gallery up all we get are small, poor quality images which is poor.

The top boys of United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea etc. who have always been in the Premier League have managed to develop their own independent websites. I can't imagine them putting up with the system Rovers have.

Yes I remember Stuart Metcalfe ( sporting a crew cut/skinhead hairstyle ? ) having a really good game that night, I was in the Riverside , just nine years old. That year my Mum bought me a Rovers shirt off Accy market ( before club shops I suppose ) cut out a number 7 from some red material and sewed it on the back. Best birthday present ever !

I was in the Riverside too, near the front. The free kick was right in front of me so I had the perfect view of it sailing toward the leaping, mutton-chopped Fryatt. Did he get another header a few minutes later but put it over the bar, or am I imagining that?

Jim, Jim, bang one in!

I was on the Blackburn End, all standing of course. We were packed in like sardines, it was a bit scary even for a twenty year old daft lad. The gulf that night was massive even though we had some good players in the team. The saddest thing for me was Bryan Douglas coming on as a sub when the game was all but over. At one time he would have danced around the ' City midfield but the magic was gone and looked as lost as the rest of the team.

A very young Stuart Metcalfe was outstanding for us that night out on the right wing. He took the fight to 'City all night. It was a free kick from a foul on him out on the right that Jim Fryatt headed home from

There were quite a few on the roof of the snack hut in the corner of the Bburn End

Your memory is much better than mine . The atmosphere that night was amazing

Are there really no promising youngsters knocking on the first-team door?

Lambert has admitted that he chose to play a second-string side due to the fixture pile-up. It would've been good to see the likes of Nyambe, Tomlinson or Mahoney given a run-out.

May have destroyed their confidence being mauled as the reserves were. I'd sooner blood them in games when we're relatively safe.

Some young players thrive on the pressure. Phil Jones was thrown in at the deep end and he turned out aight.
