Appalling attack on Remain campaigner Labour MP Jo Cox today. She's in critical condition in hospital. She has 2 young children.

Attacker apparently shouted "Britain First" before shooting her.

For her sake, and the country's, let's hope the vote is for Great Britain not Little England on June 23.

You'd make a great politician jim, jumping on a potential tragedy to further your own viewpoint.

Nonetheless, hoping for a speedy recovery for the poor woman.

I think it's dangerous to pre-judge the motives for the murder before they actually come out.

I think Tim Shipman Political Editor at the Sunday Times just summed up today on twitter:

All the heat and nonsense of the last two months is thrown into immediate perspective. Sad. Disgusted. Angry. Sickened. RIP Jo Cox

This referendum has to be postponed now.

How can anyone campaign in safety for either side with this level of mania?

I think that's your worst post on the topic to date. This really is a threat to your way of life, isn't it.

This is a democracy. The real issue will be if this horrendous crime is used to influence the debate.

I didn't think it would be so soon.

You cannot allow atrocities to suspend democracy,

Jim that is one of the worst post's of all time, cheap point scoring when someone has died,

shameful

Yup, the Bremainers will be rubbing their hands with glee after this sacrifice.

Sacrifice ? That lovely young woman has died and leaves two young children without a mother.

Wind your neck in.

More opportunistic than 'Andy' Burnham, disgraceful.

Amarillo is right though, I'm sure the majority of the 'stay' voters will be just as saddened as the rest of us, but there will be a core of them that will be seeing this as an opportunity to manipulate voters(and i'm sure the healines in the 'stay' supporting media outlets leading up to the vote will prove that.

Deary me. We are cynical.

Such a deep-seated mistrust of politicians in this country that even displays of grief and sadness by MPs will be viewed with suspicion.

What has become of us? Of our humanity?

Absolutely disgusting act and huge sympathies with Jo Cox's family. The Labour MPs receiving death threats over the Syria vote was bad enough but this is another level. Whether a Leave or Remain voter, everyone should be against scum who act to forcefully circumvent democracy. RIP.

Regarding Jim's post, I can only assume he wasn't one of the number of people calling Trump a disgrace for exploiting Orlando if he's gonna come out with posts like that.

We are being governed by some who think they are unaccountable and some that know they are unaccountable, hence the suspicion.

Typical lefties,

democracy on their terms only,

as demonstrated by PhilipL's post

What a tragedy. RIP.

I have to agree that you cannot suspend a vote because of violence. It only encourages further violence. You have to soldier on.

There are no winners out of acts like this. It makes people on both sides feel less safe, and as people feel less safe communication breaks down, and as that disappears the ability to function as a society goes. It is one of the reasons I support Remain. It is a pro-communication, pro co-operation platform, and that's what I want more than any specific bit of policy.

WTF DUDE

It's a strange split amongst the people I'm close to.

In my close family (5 rovers and 1 wigan), we quite literally have one supporter of each of the Tories, Labour, UKIP, LibDems, Plaid Cymru, and SNP. All voting or at least leaning to (could change) OUT.

My girlfriend's family, all Tories and all @#/? DINGLES voting IN.

It's going to be a fascinating cross-section to look at whatever the result. Despite all the scare-mongering, I don't believe a vote either way will affect your average joe all that much. In the same way changes in Government don't result in the country's imminent death as we're promised at every election.

The heart wants what the heart wants.

You cannot allow atrocities to suspend democracy,

Or civil liberties.

because sadly politics(and the media) has time and time again proved to inhabit some of the most disgusting, self serving, narcissistic humans in society.

Absolutely not. One of the ways we stand firm to protect our democracy is we do not let those who oppose it change our way of life. Whether it be an individual killing or mass terrorism life must go on.

To change hands victory to those who would attack our democracy.

Yup, the Bremainers will be rubbing their hands with glee after this sacrifice.

This is appalling.

Moving back to the referendum itself. I read an article in the London Standard developing a thought which I've had for sometime.

The referendum result is not legally binding.

It seems increasingly likely a leave win will see Cameron ousted, hopefully the government defeated and a general election. If this happens I would want to see those who support remain, from whichever party, stand on a ticket which makes clear if elected as an MP they oppose EU exit.

Our MPs are representatives and not delegates. This allows them to act in the way they feel best represents our interests. Delegates don't have the same freedom. Currently around 70% of MPs are remain supporters. If Leave win and Cameron triggers article 50 he has to put this before both parliament and the Lords. If the referendum result is very, very close - say 51 out and 49 in on a low, 50%, turn out - there is a good argument only 25% of the people want out and MPs should act in the interest of the 75%.

Always in the small print.

This is why people hate politics and distrust politicians.

So if we vote Remain it's all smiles and we move on. If we vote Leave, let's have another go.
