Trying to be positive but my gut feeling is it's going to be close.

A number of City institutions have been running their own private exit polls today, so they should have more accurate data than the polls. The FTSE was up quite a bit today, particularly those shares who would want a Remain vote e.g. banks, IAG etc. Although contrary to what Jim says sterling has hardly moved.

Stop talking about the grey vote. I know a lot of grey haired voters, myself included, who will vote remain. It depends where you live, what your own experiences are, how you were brought up, all sorts of things

Fair enough, I have a lot of grey hairs myself but don't class myself as a grey voter, I was particularly talking about Blackburn in general although re-reading see it could be interpreted differently

I have just looked up the official definition of what is considered the grey vote, I thought it was 65+ but it is actually 55+ (still not included )

I think it will be very close, and I can't say which way. Hopefully even if it's something like 53% in 47% out, the narrow result will rock the EU gravy train and spark a real change in the way the EU operates. It's a massive gravy train for the likes of Farage, and those right in the centre of it (e.g. Merkel, Junker, Hollande) will see that this unwieldy institution needs greater democracy and transparency otherwise the nationalist and far right parties will get stronger. I doubt the elite will take decisive action whatever happens other than to try and screw Britain up if the people dare to leave. It seems that they just love meeting up, and not really tackling the major issues.

Good point, but perhaps just using the Parliament (and keeping it in one city) or electing a representative for each country and then using a majority amongst them would be more democratic. The Parliament is nothing really whilst you have the leaders' get togethers, the Commission and so on all add to the messy confusion and inertia.

That's why I'd get rid of them. For the EU to have any future, it needs to reform in the ways we mentioned so it has democracy and much more transparency. Otherwise it's going to be as crazy and fragile as the Austro-Hungarian empire. And end up falling apart, though probably not after a world war.

The fact that the UK has held this referendum may empower others to try regardless of the result.

I think we are seeing the start of the beginning off the end for the EU as we know it.

Germany may have a section, but they'll probably be squashed by the grand coalition that's in power. The EU has done some good things in the past, but it's a really sloppy complacent shambles in it's middle age.

Not really to do with the EU but was reminded of this by the mention of Austria-Hungary above.

I was talking with a mate (aforementioned left-winger I often enjoy disagreements with) about Nuclear weapons. Unusually for a leftie he supports trident, while I don't. I finally feel like I won a debate with him. We got round to chatting about comedy, leaving the debate behind, beginning to quote Blackadder.

'In order to prevent war in Europe, two superblocks developed. Us, the French, and the Russians on one side, with the Germans and Austria-Hungary on the other. The idea was to have vast opposing armies, each acting as the others deterrent. That way, there could never be a war.

Does anyone know how the process will be declared? Will it be declared in terms of constituencies, ie Sunderlands results out by 11:30pm, or will there be a wait until the overall vote is counted? If its the second, what time will the vote likely be released- just so I can decide to stay up, or go to bed.

The forecast is around 8:00 am, depending on how the totals are looking, so a close vote will take longer to tally up the totals

The count will be done by constituency with first a bit after midnight but the bulk between 3 and 5.

The difference with a general election is that there will be no exit poll as in a general election as there is no historical data on voting patterns and its a cumulative score, so every vote counts.

If there is a clear leader there might be some attempt to call the result early but that doesn't look very likely. I would expect a fairly confident call on the result around 5am unless it is really really tight.
