As for the Treasury's figures I think we have to agree with John Redwood and many others that Treasury forecasts seem to at best inaccurate!!

I do though agree in principle that leaving the EU will have a significant and far reaching negative effect on the country.

Yoda as an aside Brazil's economy is in trouble.

What about the rest of the "free from EU" world.

I don't doubt leaving the EU would have an effect on the country, but why should it be negative ?

Countries like Germany will be gagging to still trade with us, we have a deficit with them of €29 billion, they won't be able to plug that gap too easily.

We had been trading with the rest of the world for centuries before the EU and can do again.

If we stay in the EU some would say the risks going forward are greater with political union the goal, and we do not have an opt out on that despite what Osbourne/Cameron says.

The EU commissionaire's are already making plans to water down what Cameron thinks he has gained and guess what, we won't know what they have in store for us until after the referendum.

You have got to ask yourself if leaving the EU is so catastrophic why did Cameron start the referendum process

I think the EU just blinked,

The European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, has warned that too much EU "interference" in people's lives is eroding support for the bloc.

The former Luxembourg prime minister said the EU had become involved in "too many domains where member states... are better placed to take action".

How are the stay camp going to explain that

I dont think theres anyone who thinks the EU works well and doesn't need reform. Its an absolute bloody shambles in many respects.

Those who wish to remain in it (like me) are doing so because on balance they believe it is better to stay. Its perfectly logically consistent to both want to stay in and want major reform.

Personally I am strongly in favour of the free market, development, freedom of movement, defence, diplomatic, human rights elements of the EU. However strongly dislike the lack of transparency, accountability, clarity and strategy.

Its a mixed bag and you have to make a judgement call.

How do you propose to carry out reform when you need all 28 countries to agree to treaty change ? it will never happen, Cameron has come back with nothing in reality

I am in favour of a free market. Full Stop. That is what we originally voted for and I am convinced that if we had been asked to vote for a United States of Europe that it is becoming the vote would have been totally different. We do not need foreigners to make our laws for us.

Some interesting comments from Obama about Britain remaining in the EU, echoing what the Premier of China said about Britain on its own being a 'small island' if not part of the EU in terms of trade. It further strengthens the need to remain as far as I'm concerned. I'm not saying it's perfect for a minute and I'd be keen to see further reform of our membership, but I'd feel far more comfortable with us being part of the EU than not.

Small island !

we are the worlds 5th largest economy.

there has been no reform of our membership,

The special status that people bang on about is similar to Vinjay's special status on this MB

Don't shoot the messenger, that's what the Premier of China said! We may be the 5th largest economy, but leaving the EU could well affect that....

I have no doubt what so ever it will affect it.

"could"

Nothing is certain, hence the use of 'could' and the series of dots! But yes, I do agree that would most likely be affected by leaving! :rover:

A part of me is thinking that leaving the EU would force us to focus on our own industries. Not a bad thing.

Free trade is great, but trade results in us neglecting our own talent somewhat.

The Chinese invented global trade, we sorted it,

Britain is at it's best when faced with a challenge, the EU is not a challenge, it is a basket case.

Why do people think jobs will be safer in a club that has twice as much un-employment as Britain has.

You'd have European employment law.

What's this got to do with the EU? The European Court of Human Rights is part of the Council of Europe, which has nothing to do with the EU and was set up in 1949 - the UK was one of the main proponents.

It would probably have been better placed in the news thread however it was a direct reply to joey_big_nose saying he like the Human Rights elements of the EU.

I think the only thing that could be worst than being part of the eu right now would be to not be part of the eu whilst a tory government is in power.

In which case we'd vote them out in the next general election. That's no reason just to be part of the EU.

If you did not like a law or regulation made by the UK government you could vote against it, try doing that with an EU directive.

Make no mistake if we stay in the EU is going to go for political union i.e. a European Sovereign Government and we will not have a say in it because allegedly we have an opt out.

The next gen election is years off and the tories can/will do a lot of harm to the common man in that time and as things stand i cant see any other party knocking them off their perch about me soon, i am far leaving the eu but i a ill think we'll be screwed either way.
