joey_big_nose Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 I'm not sure about Rooney on the left of a midfield three. It smacks of the bad old days of shoe horning the big names into the team and having a lot of square pegs in round holes. To be fair in that side last night out of the midfield and strikers probably only Kane and Dier were in their natural position. However technically the players are very strong now and can play in multiple positions relatively easily. Playing Rooney on the left is much more doable than when we had Heskey or Lampard out there.Rooney will play, he is top goalscorer and captain, but it is hard to see where he fits. Theyll have to bend something. I think Id rather have him in midfield rather than on the wing as being central suits him
yorkblue Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 The gauntlet has certainly been thrown down to Rooney to earn a place in the starting 11. If it inspires him to get to his best form then that will only be good for the team and as Roy's captain he would surely start . If he is not able I show that sort of form or if he fails to get properly 100% match fit then Roy has a big decision to make . He is worth a place in the squad for his experience even if he becomes a non-playing captain. You make a good point about the number of players who are simply very good technically capable footballers able to play confidently and effectively in slightly different roles.
perthblue02 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Just got to hope the England FA did not sign any silly contracts with their commercial partners stating that the "marketable stars" must play, like Brazil reportedly did. Otherwise Shrek will be starting every game in France
Gav Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 I'm sure the way England played last night, is the way Lambert wants rovers to play. and the way Bowyer wanted to play, sadly Gary didn't have the players or the ability to achieve that goal, lets hope Lambert does.
Husky Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Why do england always beat germany when it does not matter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2t_AXkTopg But,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I remember this like it was yesterday.
Stuart Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 and the way Bowyer wanted to play, sadly Gary didn't have the players or the ability to achieve that goal, lets hope Lambert does. We scored 3 goals, GAV. That's two more than Gaz wanted in his approach.
jim mk2 Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Butland has a broken ankle so Burnley's Tom Heaton could be England's reserve keeper on Tuesday. More bragging rights for those nice Yorkshire chaps but can anyone name the last Burnley player to make an England squad ?

Mr. E Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Hodgson.....I think I would almost rather have Kean at this point. Read this: http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/35908204 A golden generation of strikers for England is set to go down the drain sitting on the bench watching Wayne stumble around, chase aimlessly, and miss every chance possible.
Norbert Rassragr Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 I saw the headline and decided not to read it. I did say I thought he'd be in the team regardless of form and match fitness, and this almost confirms it.Hodgson will probably put Walcott, Sterling and Milner ahead of Alli, Barkley and Vardy because he's a coward and will just favour the well known mediocrity.
Backroom Tom Posted March 28, 2016 Backroom Posted March 28, 2016 and the way Bowyer wanted to play, sadly Gary didn't have the players or the ability to achieve that goal, lets hope Lambert does.I don't think that's the case personally Bowyer never really seemed to play with anyone up supporting the men up top even when he had players with pace to select to do so (King and Barrow for example)Lambert has shown an obvious intention with varying results so far. We just have to hope Roy wants to play that way as well and not revert to type
JAL Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Why do england always beat germany when it does not matter. Because Germany fielded an experimental team most likely.
roverandout Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 No they didn't, they were missing 1 of 2 players, we had more players out, your pessimism knows no bounds jal
den Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 and the way Bowyer wanted to play what makes you believe that Gav?
Moderation Lead K-Hod Posted March 28, 2016 Moderation Lead Posted March 28, 2016 Because Germany fielded an experimental team most likely. It was full strength bar Boateng and Schweinsteiger....

gumboots Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Dobson?checking the lists it would appear so unless I or Wikipedia missed something
Iceman Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 No they didn't, they were missing 1 of 2 players, we had more players out, your pessimism knows no bounds jal Well, its not like the England team has been cause for optimism before right? It was an international friendly, but its once the Euros fully start, and they can produce that sort of results consistently, then you can say well this squad might finally be the one

Posted March 28, 2016 Backroom Posted March 28, 2016 Some people just love to moan, even after an excellent win against Germany as a direct result of ambitious, aggressive and entirely uncowardly tactics that Hodgson has introduced to the team. In a friendly. It was nice to see, but probably best to save praise for if those same tactics are employed in a few months time.
Norbert Rassragr Posted March 28, 2016 Posted March 28, 2016 Some people just love to moan, even after an excellent win against Germany as a direct result of ambitious, aggressive and entirely uncowardly tactics that Hodgson has introduced to the team. As DE said, wait until the 1st game. As captain Rooney is almost certain to start, and he's been sh-t for years. When it comes to a competitive match, Woy will go back to the same mindset, tactics and players that will lead to turgid failure. Kane will not be up front with Vardy for instance, Alli, Drinkwater and so on will hardly get a look in. It's not just Hodgson but every England manager seems to do this e.g. Sven took a 46 year old Sheringham instead of Jansen in 2002, Anderton and David Platt instead of Wilcox and Sherwood. It isn't moaning but a realism based on past experiences, one of which was the abject failure of Hodgson's England in 2014
