Dann and Hanley were equally poor. Both flapped about, slippied around and had a clanger in them most games - luckily, sometimes we got away with them. Both have clearly improved.

Regardless, neither are a patch on Berg & Short, Nelsen & Samba, Hendry, Henchoz or Jones.

Balance in those partnerships, one aggressor and one thinker. Very similar are Hanley and Duffy and struggled when together regularly but improved when Lambert tightened the team up and tried to force the opposition to go down the middle more instead of teams playing right through us nearly every week previously.

Under a similar style they can be the best CB pair in the champ even though they don't really compliment each other. Play an open style and they'll struggle again imo. Either one plays better with an experienced steady Eddi next to them.

Not Wes Brown though, just another busted flush him.

Big day tomorrow as players report for pre season training. Would love to be a fly on the wall as OC gives his rallying call. Back to this thread I don't think OC will go for Brown simply based on his "reputation/name". I think he is more astute than that and it will be squarely up to Brown (what's in a name?) to make his case to the Club's Management team

Forgive me for posting this here but I thought it was an excellent feature but wasn't convinced many would see it on the Coyle thread

I read that earlier today on newsnow. The usual Coyle babble. One thing he's brilliant at is talking. Whatever it is he says appears to rub off onto anyone who listens to him - chairmen, players, media, fans.

I thought there were some interesting quotes in there.

'On his staff he has the vast experience of Alan Irvine and Rob Kelly, and despite no sign of his arrival just yet, it would be a surprise if long term sidekick Sandy Stewart wasn't next to him in the dugout by the start of the season' - I'm still convinced Coyle will have him in here soon and it seems they think so too.

Coyle said:

'WE have to understand this is a club with tremendous history'

'Its up to US to come in and make the best of it'

'WE have shown we can wheel and deal and get good players in with the finance we have. I have started already'

'WE'LL do our best in our circumstances'

'People know how hard WE work and what WE do and now WE have to replicate the success WE'VE had elsewhere. WE'LL leave no stone unturned'

'WE come in with a real work ethic and WE'VE shown WE can be successful'

----------

That all sounds very good but who is the 'WE' Coyle repeatedly refers to here? Certainly isnt Irvine or Kelly given they've never worked with him before.

Stewart will be in the house soon. Question is who goes to make way for him.

“When you look at our squad, I think we’ve got some very good talented players, but I think the one thing that we will continue to look to add is that real blistering pace"

He then lists a lot of wingers so I doubt he'll be looking to bring in more wide men, sounds like he's looking for pace up top... Which would be a good thing, much needed in my view.

When does the agreement for watt expire? Him and Graham seem close. Both facetiming and posting over twitter lol matt grimes sent a love heart to them both.. I know it's nothing but it's nice to see players of ours or former players get along so well

I'd be happy if Watt came back. He's got some talent and as he's young, under the right management (not saying Coyle is mind you) he could develop into a really good player.

Looking at our business so far and what Coyle is saying, it seems unlikely we are going to be spending any money on transfer fees this summer.

Shame though.

Interesting football day coming. Wouldn't be surprised if there are trialists than Brown training with Rovers.

I've been in Nice a week now and really looking forward too see England today. Sweden Belgium match wasn't the worst and Swedish fans were great. Let's see how England will do. My second England match on live, first was in Helsinki about a decade ago.

Yeah like most on here would like Watt as the third striker, but if a fee involved don't think it will happen, possible fourth striker could be Delafounso as he has been spotted a couple of times at the training ground, could be he's just keeping himself fit,but I wouldn't be suprised if he signed a short term deal,be happy with two more strikers and another left back, with Bryne confirmed this week.

2 things stand out for me with Owen Coyle, he talks the talk but often can't walk the walk.

All the positive spin and rallying calls won't win football matches, he'll be judged on results and probably won't be here for the start of next season because nothings changed at the football club other than the manager, and the environment doesn't lend itself to success on the pitch.

How about Kolo Toure?

Coyle needs to be really careful with the way he talks. Talking positively about everything and anything will only get him so far once the season starts. There has to be more balance to what he is saying or we'll all just get sick to the back teeth of it like we did with Kean and his comical statements about new signings being the new Rooney, Batistuta, etc.

I think I saw him describe Feeney as an exciting signing....I mean really?

All in all I am generally pleased with the dealings. As others have said above, Tony Watt would be a good third striker to have as well.

3x the player Wes Brown ever was but fantasy stuff probably. Good chant though......

Not sure why it would be fantasy stuff - he's available and Celtic are talking to him. We've already beaten them to one player recently, no reason we couldn't do it again. But once again it would be flying in the face of what Cheston outlined as our recruitment strategy.

It will also be interesting to see how he puts a positive spin on our hest players leaving.

Andy Bayes from Radio Lancs has posted a couple of photos on twitter of Wes Brown in training at Rovers this morning.

Hopefully we'll see this Byrne lad get announced today and they can move onto the next batch of targets hopefully, we definetely need a few more.

I worry for him in such circumstances Neal, having listened to his sound bytes in the past, it could be nauseating.

Lets hope it doesn't come to that.

I wonder if they can find a way around it by offering him a set amount over 2 years on a rising scale or something or maybe even a pay off at the end if he doesn't get the 3rd year. Seems odd we'd suddenly offer him the 15/20k pwk he surely still commands all of a sudden.

Keep in mind that our skeleton squad to start the offseason also means our wage bill was probably pretty small to start. All those out-of-contract players were earning something, not to mention the loanees who are now gone, Rhodes is off the wage bill, we may finally be done paying off Vukcevic haha..., etc.

Suggests Coyle's willing to gamble on paying high rates for Graham and perhaps Stokes, with the Feeney and loan deals more indicative of how the rest of the squad will be filled out. We may not have an individual wage cap like Birmingham, but the average wage will likely be similar to theirs... Perhaps Coyle is already banking one of Hanley, Duffy, Evans, or Marshall being sold too.

Someone is going to leave, one of the centre halves surely.

That kind of signing would be worth it going off strategy for I'd say. Massive statement and boost to players and fans alike plus he'd have something to offer on the pitch.

Wes Brown is going down the pension pot route of Etuhu. Murphy, Gomez etc. Even on pay as you play he'd get a retainer of 5k+ pwk probably.

Are you sure about that? £5K a week comes to £260 grand (over a quarter of a million) a year. That's a lot of money as a retainer.

Not for someone like Brown who's dropping from 35k pwk or more and could pick up more than that if he exercises his football pension or takes a lucrative contract abroad somewhere for 12 months.

I suppose it may come down to his desire to just play and maybe stay in the area over money. Doubt it though.
