Who was the long haired left winger for Iceland? Can we afford him?

Its Birkir Bjarnason. He Plays for Basel where he has 29 matches and 10 goals since 2015. Plays European football and collects trophies With Basel. Doubt that we can afford him and doubt that he would come here.

That Aron Gunnarsson chap though from Cardiff. Contracted until 2018 after signing av New contract summer 2015. His value has risen a lot.

Agree about the sentiments about Spurr. Liked his characted, but I think we show good business sense when we stay away from offering him 3 years and also reducing his pw as he has become a backup player.

I see - I doubt he would come either then.

Birkir Bjarnason, if you ever read this - loving your work. 6 years ago we would have been in a position to sign you and I think you'd have been brilliant.

It seems to have gone quiet regarding Jack Byrne. Do we think this one is still likely to happen?

Apparently its done but they have to wait until 1st July to confirm it as until then he's still officially on loan in Holland.

Buying players on the back of tournament performances is a dangerous game. Playing well in tournament football when emotions are running high is different to being required to turn out performances week in week out in the cut and thrust English football.

Karel Poborsky ........ i rest my case

Pob was great, jordi cruff not so much, what was the name of the guy Liverpool signed at the same time, attacking mid brown combed back hair with a headband in, good player though, played there for a few seasons i think(may have been a croat, i cant remember)

El Hadji Diouf is probably the best example, after his performance against France Liverpool stumped up an awful lot of money for him. He had a decent career and went on to be a reasonable premier league player but he was bought to be world class.

Oliver Bierhoff was similar at Milan after his winning goal at Euro 96, never lived up to expectations.

Bierhoff would still have been a great signing for us had he chosen to come here, we offered five mill didnt we?(or was it 10!) He would have been a decent like for likeish replacement for shearer

Edit:- just lookef at an old article from 96, we did offer 5mill but we he wouldnt come because we had 30k salary cap at that time and he wanted more, also we tried to sign klinsman and bloody Bebeto that year, wr reslly did struggle to attract foreigners and estsblished players

Spurr hasn't been the same since his injury, but replacing him will take time and resources better spent elsewhere. For one thing, we're still in desperate need of an out-and-out right back. I don't think I can take another season of alternating between an out of his depth Henley, a tragically wasted Marshall, and a moonlighting Lowe.

I do think Lowe could be coached into being a decent full back. It's unlikely he will be a world beater but he does have a lot of the necessary attributes to be a good championship full back. There seems to be a toss up with championship full backs where they are either good going forward and terrible at defending or vice versa, whereas I think Lowe could be fairly good at both (although more defensive minded). He's never going to be the same attacking outlet as say Marshall is but then full backs are defenders first and foremost.

Why cant we just sign a proper RB, instead of these makeshift ones. I really cant remember when last we had a team, where a player was actually playing in his correct position.

Just because a player started off in one position it doesn't mean they can't convert to being equally as good or better in another. Gareth Bale, Phillip Lahm ring any bells.

Jason Lowe isn't good enough to be a central midfielder at this level, rather than chuck him on the scrap heap it would be economically more prudent to invest in him becoming a right back where he has shown he has the ability to do very well. Much like Brett Emerton, who had the best period of his career after being moved to right back. I would argue that Lowe's best games for Rovers have all been at right back.

As for playing out of position, the days are gone where players positions are static, barring possibly centre half, even then they can be asked to do a job at full back or holding midfield from time to time.
