That's all part of the plan, Abbey. Fans will keep adjusting their expectations to accommodate the dumbing down process.

Nearer home,Fred Pickering was a full-back and Newton was a centre-half (as we called them then).Duggie was a winger and McEvoy was a mid-fielder. And that's in one team! Think Mike England started as a wing-half as well.

Yeah, England was a right half. The youngsters won't know what that was.

Those sliding tackles, where he slid in, took the ball, got to his feet with it in his control and took it away were unbelievable. Mike England was a fantastic, footballing centre half who was absolutely commanding in the air as well. Gutted when he left.

My nan had a date with him and dumped him because she didn't believe anyone would really be called 'England' :P

Lads, i am under no illusions. Venkys have completely destroyed this football club and i agree that hailing the loan signing of a 20 year old city player is a far cry from where we were before these clowns showed up.

Jason Beckford or some similar name I remember us signing on loan from City and getting exited

Times have gone full circle .....

again pal, then why are we so bothered with trying to sign players in their specialist position? Why not just take a current player, and see how he does at Left Back. If he does well, keep him there and we save money. We brought in Hendrie at Left Back, but now looking for a replacement for Spurr. But why not move Henley there, seeing as he did well against Man United.

You are trying to make space for Lowe, because he is rubbish as midfielder (supposedly his preferred position), to try and move him to RB to accommodate him. Marshall should be further up the pitch imo, not be at RB, when he could be influencing the game in a more attacking role.

And as i said, i dont have an issue if during a game, circumstances change either an injury or red card, and we have to shuffle the deck a bit to move players around. But when we start a game, let the players play in their proper position.

I don't know if you're deliberately trying to ignore what I'm saying but you continue to miss the point.

I am not trying to make space for Lowe anywhere. Judging him as a midfielder he wants throwing in the bin. However, Jason Lowe played a number of games for us in the Premier League at right back where against better opposition than we currently face he did very well. So well in fact that I believe right back to his best position (I believe he played there in the youth team also). As a result I would like to see Jason Lowe played at right back because in my opinion he has shown in the games he played there that he is better than what we will be able to bring in. This has nothing to do with players playing out of position or shuffling for shuffling's sake and this example can in no way be used as a blanket approach. I am saying Jason Lowe is not a midfielder, it has been a mistake to play him there, you refer to "playing players in their proper position", I am saying midfield isnt Jason Lowe's proper position, Right back is, he just doesn't know it yet. The same as Gareth Bale isn't a left back, it was a mistake to play him there. Just because a coach at some point gave someone a position doesn't mean its the best one for them.

Some good examples there. Another one was Liverpool's Ray Kennedy. How anyone had the foresight to see that he would be such a gifted midfield player after his Arsenal appearances as a burly centre forward is beyond me.

Anyone mentioned Paul Warhurst - played full back, centre back, centre midfield and centre forward - all at an excellent standard. Lets not forget Chris Sutton - centre back, centre forward - and centre midfield for Celtic.

Lothar Matteus became a very good sweeper (pre Euro 2000)

Ruud Gullit played all over the park.

Steven Gerrard was an excellent right back in his early days at Liverpool.

Class players are flexible lower end championship players aren't if you want to prosper. Or do we just want to get any old 11 on the park and hope for the best ?

That's not whats being said though is it? Nobody is advocating playing people out of position, I am actively advocating them changing position for the long term as they are better suited to those positions. I really don't understand why this is causing so much debate and/or confusion.

No wonder when it perfectly reasonably starts of about Jason Lowe then names like Warhurst etc get thrown about as examples

Absolutely no comparison whatsoever. The best case in point is indeed Marshall BUT he was a good player already anyway. Goes to show the better they are the more flexible they are.

If it came to using Lowe as RB in order to put Marshall right wing again I'd actually prefer BM stay at right back and put Feeney or Bennett or Conway in front of him as I feel the team as a whole would be far stronger.

As always my preference would be a proper right back, Marshall on the wing and Lowe benched as cover. Plenty options there.

Its looking like Marshall will play right back this coming season.

So we will have Conway, Bennett, Feeney and Mahoney as winger options

Feeney out !

No coincidence that Byrne coming in has been announced on the day Irvine leaves. Good day to bury bad news

I'd suggest it's merely a coincidence! Tenuous the correct word?

Don't be silly. We've been led to believe that Byrne couldn't be announced till July 1st. Now Irvine leaves and suddenly it's announced. I'm not a conspiracy theorist but it seems like they've got the 2 together quite nicely

Honestly though does it really matter, We've signed a potentially brilliant player and lost a coach, there was a time that a coach leaving would be so insignificant it would barely get a mention other than maybe a couple of lines in the LET, but we've become so totally focused on just the negative stuff lately(on here anyway)
