Keane was very good with us and should have been signed. With a little effort it could have been done.

Brown isn't worst but it's very obvious he couldn't play every game. We need leadership and that we would get.

Absolutely nothing against signing Brown - it could be a masterstroke. Experienced centrebacks are worth their weight in gold (Tony Gayle, Kevin Moran, Ooijer (sp)). Obviously fitness could be an issue but I'm sure his wife would keep him fit

I wouldn't be averse to signing Brown, providing he can prove his fitness.

But how does he prove his fitness? Physically he could be in good shape if he comes in for a trial, could do all the training and could pass a medical too. The real test of his fitness is when he plays competitive games by which time he would presumably have signed a contract. 76 starts in five years at Sunderland tells me everything I need to know.

Far too much of a gamble for me.

Good point, perhaps 6 month contract or pay as you play? He would probably prefer a guaranteed contract though I'm sure. Just think his experience at the back would prove valuable.

Lets not forget that Brown is only coming in for Trial not to sign.

We've been done like this before. Robbie Fowler appeared on trial remember........he appeared just to get his fitness, then it was let's take a look at him. He looked great in training lets sign him.......he looked good on the subs bench..........he looked great....sorry bloody awful on the pitch.

We should be warry when these types appear on trial. It could just be a way of diverting fans into thinking that theres a chance that if he breaks down he wont sign even though he's probably signed on a two year deal already.

You answered your own question in your original post Tony - pay as you play. I would have no issue at all signing him on that basis (and nor should he if he thinks he's fit)

Pay as you play then yes but we seem to be getting generous with handing contracts out again so no doubt they'd lumber us with this guy for 2 years or something.

Experience or no experience it's not worth the gamble on this one there is better to be had out there. Some moan when Wheaters name gets mentioned yet would jump at signing this crock ?

Some strange stuff being supped this weekend.......

Brown's actually played just over 100 league games in 8 years. Easy to prove his fitness in ore-season training but not the same once games start coming thick and fast and personally I don't see much point in signing a leader who isn't there to lead often enough. Big gamble this I reckon. There was talk of his legs having gone last season as well I seem to recall, a season when he managed 6 games.

What happened to the young players Cheston said the new manager would have to bring through? Brown is 36 and would want decent money for what, twenty or so games. Unless the deal was pay as you play he should be nowhere near.

At 36 he will have to take what is offered. He's not in a position to dictate terms.

Thing is even pay as you plays can be tailored to end up at about 20k pwk. Someone like him with his name and Man Yoo background could probably still pick up a decent 12 moth contract abroad somewhere so he won't play for nowt after being on 30 grand pwk + most of his career.

He's always been a bit of a crock and I don't think he was ever that good anyway, I see nothing in this one that can't be bettered, he's just a name.

Move on I say.

It was never on. He said he hated playing for us. Prat!

GB wanted Keane but the Venkys wouldn't finance a deal. Another great decision!

As for Wes Brown no thanks; we need experience - yes - but not someone who is constantly in the treatment room. We've had enough of those over the years Grella being the stand out candidate

I was going to mention Chestons comments about young players. All the signings so far are either over 30 or heading towards 30.

Its quite the opposite of what Chestons on record as saying Ricky, but it shouldn't be a surprise to any of us.

Keane hated his time here, when he left he told anyone that would listen that he's not be coming back under any circumstances.

I thought it was GB wanted him but Man Utd wanted him to gain premiership experience so joined newly promoted Burnley instead? He also wasnt keen on playing full back

I disagree that Hanley is off. Teams will have to pay the asking price for players. wasn't there a rumour a few weeks that Fulham had bid 1.5 mil rejected.

in today's Sunday People they are reporting that Hanley asking price 5 mil plus and teams like Fulham, Sheff Wed, Derby and Burnley are interested.

Lets not forget that Brown is only coming in for Trial not to sign.

An odd post Chaddy. You say you disagree that Hanley is off but your next sentence is about a press report of interest in him from 4 Premier League teams at a fee of 5M.

Do you not believe that either?

To be fair I think Chaddy meant that Hanley won't be going for £1.5mil. If somebody wants him the price is £5mil. He could be replaced for £5mil.

That's how I remember it and the only time I've heard of him moan about his time here was the full back thing or when he's been playing up to the dingle fans a bit. 'No way was I ever going back to that club' I think he said.

I did mean that but also the 47er posted Hanley is off sounded like he was deffo off.

Maybe Hanley will stay cos of the signings we have made and Im sure Coyle will speak to Hanley and Marshall about their futures

He didn't like it at Rovers. There was 0 chance of him staying.
