So Rooney is Big Shams captain going forward, lets not forget how many posters have been calling for Rooney to be dropped, let alone be captain of the national side.

Thoughts

What do you have against him? I understand his football isn't to everyone's taste, but he saved us from relegation.

I think he'll be successful for England in terms of what he can get out of a limited pool of players. The only thing that bothers me is that he won't have autonomy over player fitness like at club level.

Sadly some cant accept that they called it wrong when Sam was at Ewood. Thats the truth of the matter...............IMO

Doesn't make any difference how anyone called it other than the owners, they sacked him, not the fans who had to endure the tripe he served up, especially away from home.......IMO

So Rooney captain? Great moved?

It's was 'tripe' that had us in a better position than we are now. In any case, it's a lazy accusation imo.

The football from 09/10 onwards was nearer to how we played under Hughes than hoofball.

It was tripe, especially away from home, I know, I saw most of it, sadly I wasn't surrounded by many others because they'd simply stopped going.

Mark Hughes was twice the manager Allardyce was, no contest Mike in my opinion.

Now then Rooney as captain? Great move? or predicable nonsense?

Not away from home, Mike. I travelled up and down the country and, a lot of the time, it felt like we didn't even compete. A constant consistent failure to achieve much away from home. - and I don't just mean the WHL AND OT debacles towards the end of his time.

As someone who followed Rovers away since the late 80s, I found it really started to weary many a supporter.

There were several occasions where Rovers fans vented and sang : "We're ******* sick of it."

Would I take that now, do I wish he had stayed ? absolutely.

But his unfair sacking and subsequent demise doesn't mask his failings. To say everything was rosy is rewriting history somewhat.

It was utopia compared to now, though :(

If we're talking away from home, I'll have to bow to superior knowledge as I rarely go to away games anyway.

Nonetheless I think his pragmatic style will suit England. At the very least, we can agree he has no hiding place :P

Making Rooney captain is in my opinion setting the bar, he's going to tow the party line, like Hodgson and the rest of them have done for years.

He's failed his first test in my opinion.

As for Michael Antonio, strange pick that?

I don't know about "twice" but I am on the record as saying that Hughes was the best manager we ever had in my lifetime(long).

When you look at how he picked us up from the depths and took us to 6th, and playing attractive football (yes we were Arsene!) it was amazing.

Sam would have got us there given time and backing though, imo of course, I don't actually think he wanted to be boring!

And for once Gav, the stats don't lie! You might have mates who went missing but attendances held up. It's on the record!

Rooney as striker is a strange pick for captain.

At the top of midfield, it could work well. I'm willing to give it a chance, but it must mean he is NOT a striker. I have to admit though, it'd be better to pick the right pegs for the right holes.

Antonio is interesting. He apparently lobbied for N'Zonzi too, but was hampered by his single U21 French cap.

Rooney is our all-time record goalscorer who has started the season relatively well. I've no issue with him being captain to be honest (though others will).

Antonio has been playing well and deserves a chance it could be argued.

I don't want to speak out of turn Gav, but it sounds like you're keen for Allardyce to fail so you can lambast him......

Rooney as a ball winning, pass-making, game reading attacking midfielder is nailed on all day long for me. Just as long as he doesn't spend his time tart-lining, and contributes at the level we all know he can, then I don't think anyone can question his selection. Captain? Well, I think the jury is out on that one, but who would be a credible alternative? In a captain you want someone who will get stuck in and lead the line by example, not someone who can point a lot and lead the inquest after the failure...

Allardyce knows what he has taken on. As long as he doesn't do that baffling thing that Woy did - sparkling possession football and tippy-tappy zippy-zappy attacking in the warm up / qualifiers, followed by rabbit in the headlights and inevitable dismal failure when it matters most.

C'mon England!

Venkys OUT!

Must admit I'm not sure who I'd give the captains armband to, but it certainly wouldn't be Rooney or Jagielka (Whats he thinking picking him?)

Anyway its all about results in international football, everyone agrees he can get results, at home anyway, so lets see what transpires.

I doubt he'll get much beyond his 2yrs deal, he's way out of his depth.

So do you believe the present attendance stats, also I think Gav may have been referring to the numbers who travelled away. I know I gave up long, expensive, away matches during Sam's tenure. It was Sam's way, I am not criticising him, I personally would just not pay for it!

25000 fans attended every home game when Sam was manager.

Fans who knew anything about the game realised the club was in big trouble as soon as they sacked him. They were of course, right.

You're talking bunkum again Gav.
