[Archived] England's Next Manager?

Recommended Posts

Ridiculous appointment. Not one PL team would touch him yet he is the manager of the premier team in England. I thought Bruce was interviewed at the time they gave it Allardyce? How come 60+ days later he is not being considered? One of the best around 3 months ago, now a total non-starter? Strange old goings on.

Terry Vegetables had us playing good football 20 years ago but then he was blessed with the likes of Gascoigne, Waddle and Beardsley in his squad.

He had people like Shearer and Sheringham for his Christmas tree formation plus a solid defence. Leaders all over the park unlike today where it's to me to you ged rid with a short sideways pass quick as possible.

Just seen an interview with Southgate, it showed exactly why he was picked. He was asked a simple question, albeit about a difficult subject, he then spent two minutes talking without answering the question. He was then asked the same question, worded differently, he then spent the next couple of minutes talking and again did not answer the question. More a politician than a manager!

Hodgson was exactly the same in terms of talking round the answer to a question. Southgate reminds me very much of a younger version of that, good safe appointment after the Sam debacle, won't upset anyone or ruffle any feathers.

Nonsensical appointment really in terms of his managerial record but the reality these days is the very top managers prefer the day to day cut and thrust and involvement of Club management.

Notwithstanding the fact that Southgate wouldn't have made my top 20 list, and has the personality of a packet of custard creams, taking on the caretaker virtually always ends in tiers.

Why does football make millionaires out of these people? Because he went 2 goals up against Spain? Sheesh.

Just shows how diminished international football is these days.

Guardiola, Mourinho, Wenger etc. wouldn't touch their national side when at their peak and using Conte as an example, it is now seen as a stepping stone (or last payday in semi-retirement)

I'm not. Custard creams are nice (escuse the biscuit pun) but I don't want a nice England manager, I want the best manager for the job - based on the complete criteria. It's the pinnacle of every manager's career, or should be, not a token or steppining stone. It certainly shouldn't have 'L' plates on it.

This is were Allardyce would've been a good tournament manager imo. They seem to struggle when the heat gets turned up once a tournament is underway and it's been pointed out by the bigwigs that the team seem to freeze therefore they really need someone who can motivate, whip up a siege mentality and overall get them enjoying it.

We know the real reasons are a combination of factors and mainly we aren't really good enough but think we are yet over countries overcome this. In an era when individualism and characters are largely being replaced by robots it's time for something a bit different. English players have been known for having a good craic but also have always been amongst the fittest and hardest working in the world so it's time to buy back into that a bit maybe.

They turn up these days expecting to fail and most just seem to go through the motions and World Cup or no World Cup you can tell half these lads would rather just be on the beach with their mates after a long season. Playing for England is first and foremost a way to boost their endorsments. Ban them from adverts etc unless it's a full squad thing and get them concentrating on the tournament nothing else.

Southgates appointment represents everything that is robotic, corporate and sterile about the modern game.

A rushed appointment if ever there was one. We could have qualified from the group without any manager.

If they'd just waited to see the amazing Coylio in action a bit more - turning relegation favourites to play-off certainties . . they could have had him.

Same old useless FA. Expect the same old useless results come the next tournament. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

You do wonder if having a larger than life character as manager would help. Takes the criticism and engages the media, allowing the team to get on with it. Venables was like that, and to l lesser extent Hoddle.

Allardyce would probably not have done any better than Capello/Hodsgon etc. but some part of you thinks maybe he might have changed things just by being different and willing to ruffle a few feathers.

On the other hand Southgate is just crackers. What exactly has he done? In all honestly Coyle has a better CV.

There's just no sense in appointing Southgate apart from non footballing stuff. Thing that gets me is why they keep throwing 4/5 year contracts in front of them, surely a 2 year rolling deal is better. Get us qualified get to the tournament and see how it goes and if it's ok get another 2 years.

They know they'll be paying him off halfway through so why waste more money, who benefits here apart from him ? Hmmm....
