Husky Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 I watched the whole of the Hockey semi-final (It was @#/? annoying how they kept changing from bbc1 to bbc2 mid match as I had to keep resetting my VPN). Anyway, what an immense performance - under the cosh for what seemed like a whole quarter but stood firm with some stella defence, also several injured players came back on to continue playing. Reminded me a bit of the Rugby 7's mens team v S. Africa. Puts the constant wet-boy soccer performances into perspective (I'm actually beginning to dislike soccer more and more each year). Just watched the women's beach volleyball final (replay) no hijabi suits in sight thank god - the powerhouses of Germany totally smashed Brazil. Do GB even have a team?

ultrablue Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Good chance of a medal in the womens 4×100 after the Americans dropped the baton in the semis
Al Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Brownlee brothers take gold and silver in the triathlon.
Backroom Mike E Posted August 18, 2016 Backroom Posted August 18, 2016 We're good on this little island aren't we?
adopted scouser Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 We're good on this little island aren't we? Yes. Doesn't stop the French, Germans or Australians whining about our dominance in cycling. Sour grapes 😂😂😂
Baz Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Good chance of a medal in the womens 4×100 after the Americans dropped the baton in the semis The amercans have been given a chance to re-run their semi, and they will eliminate another country if they have a better qualifying time. Watching the replay, I cannot see any grounds for this other than its the US team, and they are one of the favourites, and they have a massive tv audience watching.
Baz Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Just seen another angle and the us woman hits the trailing arm of the Brazilian runner whilst trying to pass the baton. Still don't think its right the us can qualify for the final in this method, they now have a relatively easy target to beat, so as long as they dont drop the baton they will qualify at someone else's expense.
Gav Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Absolutely fantastic performance by GB womens hockey team, just brilliant. Tell you what, fitness of the mens and women hockey teams are on another level. Fantastic
Baz Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Another gold for the GB ladies hockey team, in a real backs to the wall performance. Didn't really deserve it on the balance of play, but its the results that count Guaranteed silver in tae kwan do too.
wolfie Posted August 19, 2016 Posted August 19, 2016 Don't really know anything about the horse jumping event but just caught the highlights of 58 year old Nick Skelton winning gold on a horse called Big Star. Quite majestic really. The hockey teams could really teach the footballers a thing or two about how to conduct themselves on a sports field. The referee's word is final, absolutely no play acting, and real sportsmanship throughout. Felt mildly embarrassed being a footie fan.

Nick Skelton first represented GB in the 1980 'alternative' olympics in Rotterdam, sine the GB equestrians boycotted Moscow. Yes just the thirty six years ago. Also didn't realise it at the time, but GB had Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh playing today - a married couple.
Audax Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Sweden Women gave Germany and own goal; poor girls, Sweden loses 1 goal to 2 to Germany. But I think they said Germany had not won the gold medal in football before. So, congrats to them nonetheless. I guess tomorrow, Germany plays Brazil, men's football. Bronze Medal basketball game, Serbia was absolutely trouncing Australia; but some teams have a let down if they don't go to the final match.
Paul Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 On the attendances. A friend's daughter is in Rio, not specifically for the Games but visiting, and says she's found it difficult to get tickets! From the little I've heard it's a combination of poor IT and apparent lack of availability. She says infrastructure and logistics are poor by our standards. When you look at the abysmal crowds you'd expect to be able to walk in to any event. BBC news reported last night the funding shortfall which threatens the Paralympic Games is only £10m. I'll be disgusted with the IOC if it can't stump up the cash. It's a shame these games have failed in terms of attendance, logistics and finance. I think it will be a long time before the IOC allows the games to go outside of the richer countries.

I think it will be a long time before the IOC allows the games to go outside of the richer countries. I heard rumours that because they are a top sponsor, the organisers where originally only accepting payment by Visa. Amazing to think that the Irish IOC representative is suspended after managing to sell tickets in empty arenas for a big profit too. The call should have been made several days ago, that if a seat isnt sold, or taken 30 minutes into a session, that it given free to local families. I doubt given the costs incurred, that many less rich countries will even bid for the games for a long time. The money for the Paralymics should not be dependent upon ticket sales for the main games - that in itself is a disgrace.
Husky Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 Oh man! That taekwondo final. Why didn't he just step back? Step back, just step back maaaannnnn
adopted scouser Posted August 20, 2016 Posted August 20, 2016 And the medals keep flowing ! 😊 What's with that woman diving over the line on the track the other day ? Technically legal, bloody stupid.
Backroom Tom Posted August 20, 2016 Backroom Posted August 20, 2016 Stunning scenes here as Brazil win the gold in football - Neymar scores the decisive penalty and cannot control his emotions. The place is going absolutely mental with pure joy
Norbert Rassragr Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 It made me want to vomit. As soon as Germany missed, the prick of a commentator was rimming Neymar like he was auditioning for pornhub. He declared them winners as soon as the save was made The sycophancy towards Brazilian football is the reason I don't like them that much. The other Brazilian medal winners were great though.
Audax Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 At the World Cup in Brazil in 2014; Germany 7 1 Brazil. For this one match to me, there really seemed to be something riding on it for Brazil, even being defeated by Iceland isn't that awful. Jogo Bonito, Brasil, they've lost their groove and their karma in football, really. I don't know if it's going to return any time soon either. As recent as 2006, Brazil just seemed to be the overwhelming favourites in the international game, they've really been taken down a few pegs. And yes, in turn, Germany really is the team out there to beat now. And yes, France defeated them in the Euro at that.
adopted scouser Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Great Britain winning medals for a laugh. Brazil win a football match and they're dancing in the streets.
Gav Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 GB finished 39th in the medal table 20yrs ago in Atlanta and in Rio we're set to finish 2nd. Government putting lottery funding in all those years back has certainly made the difference. The national football team has been in decline for the past 20yrs, this when the money in the game has gone through the roof? Inward looking, unable to reform, money obsessed managers, agents and players, it's an absolute disgrace.
Husky Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Boxing is such a joke sport sometimes. "Everyone thought you won but in the end you lost". LOL!
matt83 Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Really enjoyed these olympics. I don't know if it's anything to do with my rapidly declining interest in all football but at times found myself on the edge of my seat watching sports barely know anything about like women's hockey of all things. Footballers in general should watch all our Olympians and take note of their professionalism, dedication and seeming humbleness when excelling on the international stage rather than overpaid underperforming cry babies we have in football. 27 golds total of 67 medals and finishing 2nd in the medals table. Not bad from little old Great Britain who some would have you believe can no longer stand alone and make an impact on the world.
