Cherry Blue Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I am not too sure of the structure of the EFL Cup. How many games do we have to win to reach the final, and will we play at Wembley? It is just the league cup rebranded, so yeah the final will be played at Wembely. WINS/CLUB 8 Liverpool 5 Aston Villa, Chelsea 4 Manchester United,Nottingham Forest,Tottenham Hotspur,Manchester City 3 Leicester City 2 Arsenal,Birmingham City,Norwich City,Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Blackburn Rovers,Leeds United,Luton Town,Middlesbrough,Oxford United,QPR,Shef Wednesday,Stoke City,Swindon Town,WBA,Swansea City.
Mercer Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Looks like Byrne and Stokes had an impact, again. They must start on Saturday. Defensively, we seemed anything but convincing - better teams will punish us a la Norwich. Went and 'lost myself' at 3-1, disappointing to see we couldn't get a fourth in the end (would have been worth £245). Never mind, picked up a bob or two for the win alone.
Blue blood Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 As much as it's only Mansfield and we should err on the side of caution, it's nice not to be losing to a team in a lower division in a cup competition for a change! Agree, this has been an irritation of mine for quite a while. Truth be told this was a must win game for Coyle after the debacle of the weekend. Lose this on top of the Norwich game and it could become a very hostile crowd towards him, and ramp up the pressure even further. As it is he won, and the cliche about can only beat what is in front of you is on this occasion true, so a good night for Rovers.

Jock Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 .@kevingallacher8's final thoughts on #rovers victory. https://t.co/0TZcBQPkVeCan't be bothered with that Kean apologist
JBiz Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Stokes 3 in 1 and a bit games is a big positive. Early days, and we still need options upfront in case of injury but pleasantly surprised by his start.
Backroom Mike E Posted August 9, 2016 Backroom Posted August 9, 2016 Plenty of upsets tonight, glad we weren't one!
JBiz Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I see Hendrie also played, any thing to say? If he's a viable championship left back, he may come in handy!
ada2020 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 That's it, this will be our catalyst, we'll win the league now.

JBiz Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 You can hear Coyle right at the end of that video! Who put Stokes cross in? Some of his running at players looked decent.
Neal Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Match highlights for anyone who hasn't seen them http://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/10529922/mansfield-1-3-blackburn Stokes and Byrne look decent.
tomphil Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Stokes looks a strong lad and natural finisher which is good although the level he's up against tonight will be similar to what he's used to. Good header for their goal to be fair. Whilst he's here Duffy should be captain no doubts and just where are the contracts for our two remaining best players ?
AggyBlue Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Job done, pleasing that Rovers had lots of shots on target tonight
Backroom Tom Posted August 9, 2016 Backroom Posted August 9, 2016 You can hear Coyle right at the end of that video! Who put Stokes cross in? Some of his running at players looked decent. WELL DONE JYACK! Byrne looks a talent the weight on his through balls is spot on put two through so the runner didn't need to break their stride. Stokes looks far more dynamic than I thought as well
Husky Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 At last!!! A proper manager playing a proper line-up. Better than those shower of @#/? managers we've had to endure in previous years, embarrasing us in this prestigious competition. IN COYLE WE TRUST!
harryhealless1928 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Not to get too carried away, but that looked exciting football and was no scrappy win.
Blue Cabbage Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 Any news on what Bill Taylor referred to before the game last night?
chor808 Posted August 10, 2016 Author Posted August 10, 2016 Stokes looked very good in the highlights, in fact he looked a bit like Shearer in his movement, I'll go a lie down for a while.
Parsonblue Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 A decent performance, particularly after Mansfield scored. Byrne looked very good in midfield and Stokes and Graham looked a decent partnership up front. Greer looks very calm at the back and the sort of defender that Duffy needs to play alongside. Feeney was impressive when he came on using his speed to get away from defenders. It might only have been Mansfield, but a win is a win and it will give the players a bit more confidence after Saturday. A number of Championship clubs again fell at this hurdle so it's a boost that Coyle has managed to get us through to the second round by selecting a strong team and treating the competition seriously.
Waggy76 Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I agree Parson and the fact we played a strong team (of sorts) should give the players , some confidence....
