Has the rule changed regarding goalkeepers? I understand that the loan situation generally has changed to coincide with the transfer window but thought exceptions would be made for goalkeepers with it being a specialist position.

Ridiculous if so. Perhaps we need to put Evans through his paces with the gloves on (Garneresque).

Evans would break a nail and have to retire from the game. That's just in the warm-up.

I know a few of us keep harking back to Gordon Lee in the summer of '74, but he brought in several new signings in a few weeks to build a promotion team.

Hawkins, Beamish, Oates and Hilton spring to mind, but I think there were a few more as well.

Hawkins and Oates were superb signings for Rovers in the old Div 3.  Both had a big physical presence.  Hawkins organised and bossed the defence whilst Oates was a box to box midfield powerhouse.  They would be invaluable to Rovers in our current predicament.

Last I heard Bolton were interested

Yeah I've heard Bolton too, listened to talk sport this morning and they stated Bolton were limited to £4.5k p/w wages ... good job we already made him a multimillionaire.

Why does it have to be a balancing act? We need at least a goalkeeper and a proven forward, quickly. There is no room for cutting corners or prioritising one over the other. If we neglect either it could ruin any hopes of promotion.

We need a keeper, whether that be purely back-up, to challenge Raya week by week or to start ahead of him. That decision is Mowbray's depending on his opinion on Raya. What is unacceptable is to think we can 'do without'. We ain't going into this season to make up the numbers and just get through the 46 games or plodding around this league for a few years. We have to get promoted and going into a 46 game season with 1 keeper in the squad is lunacy.

Likewise the forward department is in equal need of strengthening very soon. This has been an obvious issue now since the end of last season and even before that as Gallagher and Emnes were never going to drop to League One. To have only added 1 relatively unproven forward all summer is a disappointment and something I believe will be our undoing unless action is taken quickly. Again, if our ambition were to float between 7th and 17th with a hope of a play off push then it might be ok to go with what we have in the hope Samuel does a job and Graham stays fit and delivers 20+ goals, but we've all seen Graham's issues with fitness.

Do we have options from the bench? If we're losing 1-0 at Southend and Graham is knackered and Samuel ineffective what options do we have from the bench to turn a game on its head in the last 20 minutes? League winning sides need people who can come from the bench and win games and as far as I can see we don't have them with the season starting in less than a week.

Work to do.

We have gone quiet on the transfer front. Will there be any incomings this week? See from this Ripley and Bogle seem like targets. Any news there? Any talk of a centre half? Would be great to get a signing in this week. Would be a big lift before the Southend game.

aahhh yes I see

in the old days none of those things could happen

So you don't see how the game has completely modernised over the years. We could play with no keeper on the bench and treat the team like is the 50s. Why not bang four up top why where at it. Who needs a midfield. Infact why not just have no subs at all. It was good enough back then.

Yes we do need a keeper and striker in this week which I am expecting to happen. Mowbray's comments after Friday game pretty much suggest he wants players in this week

Would I want to buy a keeper or Striker? and with the other position sign a free transfer or loan?

I would rather spend money on a striker and sign a keeper on a free or loan. then vice versa

I don't believe Mowbray would do without.

Mowbray wanted to revamp the midfield area and he seen that as most important. We sign a striker but that's deal took over a week to sort out.

Ripley would be good addition alright but personally I think we need a centre half this week. Really looking forward to the weekend hopefully a win to get us goin.

Any mention of a name for centre half?

I don't want to see us bring anyone in as back up, I think you should always try and bring in better than we have.

If that means Raya or anyone else drops down the pecking order then so be it. We don't owe anyone a starting place, and it should be a fair fight for every position.

Poor lambs, how can they be expected to cope on an annual salary of £230k?

Excellent points.

This club has spent most of the last few years downgrading every position so no harm in the odd upgrade and no point sticking with adequate if you can get better in for not much money.

I agree entirely.  At this stage of their development both Raya and Ripley need games.  Cannot be achieved at the same club.  I believe Raya has earned his chance and although we need cover in the goalkeeping department, at this moment Ripley is not the right choice, maybe unfortunate but not right for us now.

We need someone to cover for Raya should he get injured or lose form but also someone who has gone around the block who he could learn from.  I see Raya being a very good keeper for us and if Venkys being Venkys worth a lot of money in 3 or 4 years time.

As much as you seem to think Mowbray is perfect , and although I do like him myself, we are going to see how meaningful his words are this week with Mulgrew and Lenihan.

Sorry, the first part is wrong as per usual with you.

Just been very impressed with him since day 1 and yes he has made some mistakes

Mulgrew and Lenihan are both fit for Saturday game aswell as Gladwin according to an article just released on the website

Sorry have to disagree that a back up keeper and another striker is more important. But I would like a another defender in before the deadline

As am I, he didn't manage to pull off the job he was set out to do last season, but I am confident that he can take us up, dependant on if we keep Mulgrew and Lenihan,

My point is that actions speak louder than words and Mulgrew and Lenihans involvement next weekend and them being here at the end of August are the first real test of his integrity.

Assuming Mowbray is telling the truth about the 2 centre backs, and theres no reason to not believe him at the moment, Wharton and Ward are fine as back up. We need a left back, fast winger, sub keeper and striker though because our squad is still worryingly thin in them 4 areas.

The article doesn't say those 3 are fit or available for Saturday. It says they weren't risked at Carlisle due to 'little knocks' and that he is 'confident' they will be fit to face Southend. They need to 'get themselves ready to train HOPEFULLY early in the week then 'we'll see' if they are ready for the weekend. 'fingers crossed' they will be.

I'm not calling Mowbray here as his hands are probably tied with the whole thing but I smell a rat. Just like every window for the last 3 years.

As a fan, I agree. The real question though is: does Madame think that? If this club can wash its own face in L1 then there is a good chance it will be allowed to do so.

If we get promoted then Venkys will need to spend again just to stay in the Championship. If that was even in their thoughts they wouldn't have tolerated Coyle for so long and would have spent the £700k Dack money back in January. Alternatively we've lost Steele and a tribunal for Mahoney that will probably Viber that outlay. Any striker and/or keeper will probably require Lenihan and/or Mulgrew to go.

League One midtable would probably suit the Punatics.
