I used to work there - sad to see. The majority of what they sell goes directly from China to countries overseas - so hopefully this won't have too much impact. Tyrone Shoelaces
One of our large local shopping centres has been bought by “ the Blackburn based Adhan Group “. They got it for a song really, Anybody know anything about them. What I can find out on the internet leads me to think this isn’t going to end well. The conservatory has seen better days of course and 'the friends of corporation park' have done a great job in helping to secure funding as the building is superb, a real treasure and deserves to be saved and put back to its former glory. Tyrone Shoelaces
Not exactly Blackburn but there a long article in my paper today about Whalley and how stag and hen parties are ruining the place for the locals.
SIMON GARNERS 194
Made a rare trip to my Bank in the Town centre this week,Christ almighty!,I couldn't get out of the place fast enough.Really sad to see what is unfolding... Lived in the Borough all my life and so much character has been lost its untrue,so many great shops shut down and long gone, replaced by pound shop shit holes, cash generators and Kebab houses. So many shop fronts boarded up,the famous old Market long gone, the iconic Thwaites Brewery vanished from its Skyline etc,etc...all done in the name of so-called progress. Appeared strangely empty of Shoppers and dare I even say felt unwelcoming,my memories of being a Teenager in the late 80's and Blackburn town centre being a vibrant boom town now sadly consigned to memory.I feel like a stranger to the place now. Dont mention the nightlife? now non existent. For those who have long since departed for pastures new...it aint what it used to be folks.Sorry to put a downer on the place but I say what I see. I missed the old market, it had so much character. I remember going there as a little kid with my grandma an the place was absolutely buzzing. The three day market especially. I haven't been in England for over ten years. It was a shit hole when I left and by all accounts it's massively gone downhill since then.

Although the holes do keep appearing faster than they can be repaired 😣 Those holes in that picture are due to pavement failure. This is generally mitigated by doing asset maintenance operations like reseals and rehabs. Preventative treatments. When the Tory scum got into government in 2008 they viciously and cynically slashed any and all funding allocated to areas like East Lancashire and BWD in particular resulting in the local road authority being left with no choice other than to do less than the bare minimum. With the total lack of funding available and the constant bad weather, the roads have completely deteriorated. Then there's also the local corruption and pocket lining that's gone on as well. I haven't been back in over ten years and have absolutely no plans to do so. Edited July 8, 2024 by Upside Down
speeeeeeedie
Can someone who lives locally give me some background on this; LET: Planning permission granted for 600 homes in Blackburn Why do people not want it? Will it create a mess? I think many people are concerned about the infrastructure, the school places, the roads becoming jammed, available GP's in the area, the usual stuff @speeeeeeedie. This particular area has seen big changes in the past few years, what was open fields has now become a housing estate and they want to build more. We have a NIMBY culture in UK, 'Not in my back yard' and in some cases for good reason, but in most cases its for selfish reasons like my house will lose value..... If this does go ahead I hope they build a significant number of social housing on the site, because we have a desperate need for social housing, its always about affordable housing, when really it should be about social housing, big difference.
