[Archived] Are some Rovers players omitted from the greatest Premier league teams of all time?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of these teams being named by journalists on social media recently. Usually the team looks something like this

            Schmeichael

Neville Terry Ferdinand Cole

Ronaldo Keane Scholes Giggs

         Shearer Henry

You have others who are often named like Beckham, Gerrard, Drogba, Viera, Lampard, Cantona, Adams, Rooney etc etc

I never see Hendry there. Is it because of what he has gotten up to post career, or was he just not one of the greats?

Any others do you think, Sherwood? Sutton?

I don't think anyone can make a case for Hendry, Sherwood or Sutton being ahead of Terry, Ferdinand, Keane, Scholes or Henry in their respective primes when the likes of Adams, Viera, Lampard, Gerrard, Drogba, Rooney, Cantona are on the bench.

Neville is lucky to get into that team, what about Marcel Desailly instead of Ferdinand ?

Ferdinand is one of the greatest defenders to play in England. He can't miss out on the team. He was quick, good in the tackle, good with the ball, good in the air and a good leader. Everything you want from a centre half.

Sol Campbell is overlooked too often. Campbell and Ferdinand for England definitely filled you with more confidence than bloody Cahill and Jones.

I think the team was selected on longevity tbh. So, Shearer as he is the all-time record PL goalscorer pretty much has to be in there.

Whilst a lot of Rovers lads were obviously instrumental in our success, they never did it to the same level after leaving us.....

Precisely. Part of the rationale for the team that Lineker, M***hy, Shearer, and Wright put together for the BBC was longevity and honors in the Premier League.

Not a Blackburn player but how Dennis Irwin is not on the list as Right Back is downright criminal in my opinion.

Absolutely, 200% agree with you there. A dedicated, hardworking, no-nonsense pro with both steel and class in abundance. The mind boggles at how much of a fee he'd command these days. Incredible player and definitely one of our (RoI) all-time greats. Either flank, like. No difference!

Their team was laughable due to the fact that was their rational, yet they left Roy Keane out. A few personal gripes came into play there.

Penalty and free kick specialist too.

To be honest it's hard to argue with that lineup. Also telling that Scholes is in there, and the two players who kept him out of the England team and ultimately led to his retirement - Gerrard and Lampard - are not.

Defense is not that great - none of those names except for maybe Cole was truly world class - but there isn't really many better names I can think of.

When he was at his peak Cole was as good a left back as I've seen play for England. Up there with Ray Wilson. Terry Cooper and  Kenny Sansom were also top class.

Scholes was great to watch, but not a true 'great' and certainly not ahead of Gerrard or Lampard.

I think he suffers from being so vastly overrated now because of how criminally underrated he was in his playing days.

This twitter thread explains my thoughts nicely (and adds a few bits), btw you can all read it, twitter not needed:

Scholes was a footballer's footballer. Sir Alex Ferguson realised what he was missing when he retired the first time - and talked him into pulling his boots on again. That sort of move is virtually unprecedented at that level, I would think. That suggests he was irreplaceable! And as much as I despise the club he played for, I would have had him in the England team in central midfield before Gerrard and Lampard every time. That isn't to say they weren't a couple of great players as well.

The timing of his tackling let him down on occasions but that's about the only slight flaw he had in his game.
