[Archived] The Battle For Third

No, not that one, the Player of the Season.

I don’t see how Bradley Dack won’t win Rovers player of the season. He is potentially going to be the L1 POTS.

After that, Charlie Mulgrew has been so talismanic for us that he would have been the nearest candidate but then both he and Graham really should stand out at this level.

So what I’m interested in is your third choice player of the season.

For me it has to go to Elliott Bennett. He has been the heart and soul of the team and has been happy to play wherever asked. His interaction with fans has been a real plus this season too.

I'd go with Bennett just for his sheer will to win. He's not the most creative but he's the Robbie Savage of this team, he drives the team on when others are flat.

Smallwood 4th. He was a revelation pre-Christmas and carried the centre of midfield on his own at times.

Think its an interesting point. If it was a gold, silver and bronze, bronze would we well behind.

Smallwood - Exceeded expectations in a slightly troublesome position. Has had a noticeable dip when he was on 9 yellows that obviously span over a couple of months however.

Graham - Been brilliant since he got his form back, shown the application that Samuel as a rival lacks, far more than just goals as he showed yesterday. But barely played for the first 2 or 3 months.

Bennett - Consistently reliable, 100% effort and attitude, have said before I am personally a bit disappointed by his lack of goals and assists, thought hed shine in that regard at this level.

Armstrong - Has been superb since he joined, but hes only been here half a season so ruled out.

Williams and Nyambe have also been in the main, solid. Think id plump for Smallwood personally, POTS is a split decision too.

Dack

Mulgrew

Raya - yes his distribution is hit and miss but you can't think of many real errors this season and he''s comfortable playing it out rather than always lumping it long. He won't get many votes as many still remember Friedel from not long ago but I think he has been an ever present part of this strong side.

  • Moderation Lead

Bennett plays the way any fan would play. He lives and dies for the cause. No frills, no fuss, just 100% commitment to the cause. He can arguably take the competitiveness a bit far on occasion as he’s prone to the odd booking and yes, more goals and assists would have been expected but desire is never lacking.

So yeah, bottom line, it would be Bennett for me.

As good as it is to see, should social media usage etc make a difference in terms of voting for a player of the season?

No, not really but it adds to the package. A bit like his fist pump.

Personally I love that Bennett plays with his heart on his sleeve.

This club needed to build a bridge with the fans and Bennett has been a real spearhead for this.

So do I but I do feel like hed do that if he had no social media presence at all. Been players in the past who have been pillored for similar, based on the results, tweets after wins will always be taken differently to apologetic ones after defeats.

Hes been consistent throughout, always gives his all, but I do feel he has the ability to have contributed more offensively.

Have to agree on Bennett, he wont impact on games in the same way Dack, Armstrong and the likes can but its his drive, determination, professionalism and passion that makes him a footballer that is very hard to dislike. When we win he is the happiest bloke on the pitch, at least in a noticeable way. As others have said, the way he connects with fans is also fantastic.

he does have the ability to impact on games though, you just have to look at his goals last season in the championship - its just that this season he has not really had to - we have so many other match winners.

Dack

Mulgrew

Bennett

Graham

Armstrong

Smallwood (started amazingly but has not been at his best in recent motnhs)
