Rodwell signs

Recommended Posts

It’s fair to say that Sunderland fans hold this lad in the absolute lowest regard possible.

One even wrote he was “The single worst piece of transfer business in Sunderland’s history”

Mogga always talks about getting the right type of player but this guy sounds like the total opposite.

Seems a bit desperate but we’ll have to see how he gets on.

If you told me at the start of the summer we would sign Rodwell, I’d be pissed off.

Well DG and Rodwell will know each other from their time at Sunderland at least... hope they got on!

Doubt they know each other too well, Danny will have been out on loan a lot of the time

Worth a punt. Only contracted for year and a point to prove. Has obvious potential, question mark about the attitude but this will be a clean slate for him and bit of last chance saloon. If he has anything left about him this will be his chance to show it. A great manager and great dressing room might be a catalyst.

Rich Sharpe thinks he is mostly considered a centre back option, which is not a bad idea. An athletic option that can play a bit would be useful when injuries/suspensions hit. Not sure how Downing will cope with the Championship.

Tbf Sunderland have been an absolute shambles for a few years although they do seem to be sorted themselves out this season, bit like ourselves last season .

In his time there he will have had Poyet, Advocaat, Moyes, Allardyce, Grayson and Coleman as his manager, bit of a piss take really.

Its a gamble it really is but could be a masterstroke....

He's saying the right things anyway, judgement reserved but prepared to give him a chance, surely he'll work hard for a manager willing to take a chance on him and reinvigorate his career?

Not a signing I would've wanted, but Mowbray's done enough to get the benefit of the doubt with something like this. Clearly there's ability, so optimisitically could be a blinding bit of business assuming his contract is a fraction of what it was.

Sunderland message board is (unsurprisingly) brutal. Should probably take it all with a pinch of salt, but one post caught my eye:

"Justice for selling us Steele"

Not sure what that's based on aside from Sunderland fans saying he refused to play.

Reading around, it looks increasingly like Sunderland shoved him in reserves to get rid of him because of a contract error THEY made. Hoping he would kick up a fuss, but he didn't.

There's an article in the loan thread where he says he last played regularly under Big Sam, and has been available to play ever since, but forSunderlands treatment of him.

He also talked (about 2 years ago or so) about being a centre half, but being forced to play in a 'safer' midfield position at Everton, and being played there ever since. He goes into a little depth in listing what he perceives as his attributes for being in defense too.

He has clearly not moved here for the money (he's been on PL money for yonks), and the one-year deal he's accepted implies he's motivated by the chance to play and is willing to prove himself.

Starting to think TM has played a blinder tbh...

Except they paid money for Steele and Rodwell was a free agent. Like I said in other thread, would be great if he does regain his previous quality.

Seems like a Plan D signing.

Doesnt come with good wishes from Sunderland fans and there’s a danger he’ll upset the dressing room spirit if he’s attitude is bad.

We have to trust Mowbray that he will get some form out of him, and get shut if he starts with a bad attitude.

  • Moderation Lead

The contract thing with Sunderland, whilst he probably wasn’t whiter than white with his behaviour there, Sunderland were happy to offer him a huge contract, knowing of his past injury woes.

Seemed to me that it wasn’t a case of him refusing to play, more him refusing to walk away from a contract they offered him. Coleman refused to pick him.

Anyhow, he’s a lot to prove here and if he turns his career around, we are all winners, if he doesn’t, Well, it’s only a short term deal, so it won’t have cost us too much in the grand scheme of things.

As OssyDave said, Sunderland have been a shambles for a bit, so it’s probably not wise to read too much into their views on Rodwell. Time well tell, ultimately...

A gamble. But could be a masterstroke. He fails here and it's lower league journeyman on very low wages by his standards for the rest of his career. The signing is clearly closely linked to Charlton not budging on Bauer. Whom I think we will certainly be back in for further down the line.

Its based on Sunderland fans views.

Much like Rovers fans hold Steve K**n in the same regard as something that falls out of your dogs arse but the media was quite happy to paint him as the victim and sympathise with him to the very end.

I'm not writing Rodwell off but his previous at Sunderland isn't painting him in a good light for me but i'll give him a chance when he pulls on the shirt.

His only saving grace is that Mogga is our manager and i don't believe he would bring a player like him in unless he knew he was going to work hard to turn his career around.

The fans were pissed off with Rodwell because they couldn't bring in any new signings because he wouldn't walk away from his contract. The club sold him down the river to be fair.

I'm not saying his spell at Sunderland was good , his form wasn't great when he did play but this bad attitude thing could be a myth.I don't believe Mogga would bring a negative type into the dressing room, he has spoke on numerous occasions of only bringing in players of good character

The crux of this is what kind of contract he's on.  he is obviously talented but has achieved next to nothing in recent years and has hardly played in the last couple.  We don't want another Stokes or Watt but you never know he might come good and if he does it'll be a great signing.

Cheap apparently, Mogga has said on numerous occasions that he wont be bringing people in on wages that would eclipse the top players already at the club. I wouldnt be paying him close to what i would be paying Dack, Mulgrew or Graham and would have him have to earn the chance of a decent contract.

Just watched his interview with IFollow, came across decent. Was looking forward to get involved with the group and the camaraderie that Mowbray told him about. Wasn't too interested in talking about the past, but rather looking forward. Said he didn't feel he had to prove something to anybody but himself. Getting involved and playing games. Still unsure if he is brought in as a midfielder or centre back. Might be an option for both.

Doesn't sound like the club sold him down the River. He was getting paid £70k per week to train!!

Anyway, as i said, i'll give him a chance when he pulls on the shirt but surely you can see why i would be somewhat skeptical of his arrival?

Have you read that article? He was fit and available to play, he didn't want want to go without being fixed up with another club first, when he refused to walk away from his contract he was told to train on his own.The club gave him that contract.

Yes I'm skeptical too but more due to his injury record and poor form rather than problems with his attitude. We will see how he does, doesn't look like it will be costing us much anyway
