Ewood Ace Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 I noticed when we had a corner today in the first half he was stood on the edge of the area. Very strange to me that a 6ft striker isn't getting into the box looking for a goal. I wonder is Mowbray telling him not to go in there (if so hardly a vote of confidence)? Or is he choosing not to put himself in there due to a lack of confidence? In which case the manager should be encouraging him to put himself in the box. 1 Quote
G Somerset Rover Posted February 17, 2019 Posted February 17, 2019 The height counts for nothing as he’s scared to head the bloody ball. 1 Quote

So much about the deal doesn't seem right. The timing, the fee and the loan aspect are serious questions that should be asked. It was reported recently that Brereton and Davenport weren't Mowbray signings. When I hear Mowbray talk about inflated fees and wages in January I get the impression he wants value for money and yet the Brereton signing and fee was a huge gamble which has so far massively backfired. It almost goes against what Mowbray preaches. 2 Quote

yellowsubmarine Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 As much as i want Bereton to succeed here (who doesnt! after such a hefty pricetag), he just doesnt look ready this season. Tony should just man up and put him in the U21s, toughen him up, score some goals and come back good next season. Quote

Refer to Alcd's earlier post - just what does the lad have? 1 Quote

He's played quite a bit now and the only thing he seems okay at is running with the ball at goal, but not in an exceptional way that will worry a competent defence. For example I would rate Joe Nuttall as slightly better at this, and he's nothing special either. Apart from that BB looks very poor in every department. Most criminally he can't hold the ball up even in the most cursory way, or finish good chances, both which we really really need and I thought was the reason we signed him. In fact - as others have said - he actually prefers to not get in the box. I'd love to know how we ended up signing him as I just don't believe Mowbray wanted this player. blueboy3333 Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Mowbray said BB will be a 'superstar' for many years at Rovers and that we should forget about the price. These aren't the words of someone trying to distance themselves from responsibility for the signing. Quite the opposite. Quote
Guest Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Starts and ends with Mowbray. His use of him is setting him up for failure before he even gets on the pitch, same with Armstrong. 2/3 good games on the right so where does he get put? Wide left. Quote
tomphil Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 (edited) Player development imo it often happened under GB and we know that despite the usual superficial words about building a promotion team they were really developing players to sell on. I fear we are going down the same route again now as now just as then if you want to get the best out of the ones you have and build a good settled side to grow into top 6 contenders you play the best suited players in their best positions to compliment your preferred system. That rarely happens under TM even last season but we were strong enough to get away with it, I refuse to believe he is imcompetent so for me he's doing it with a lot of these guys for other reasons. Mattyblue Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Mowbray always talks up his man management credentials, ‘good human beings’ and all that. He needs to follow up on the talk with this lad. Because for me he’s not in a good place. His head has completely gone for what I can see, no confidence at all and just basic standards of proficiency you’d expect any pro footballer to have, even if it’s just instinct, have disintegrated. I look at it this way, if he was from the academy he wouldn’t be anywhere near the squad, nevermind staring back to back games, he’s obviously starting games because of the fee, not because he’s pushing for it. For the good of the lad and the team he needs removing from the squad immediately before this ‘investment’ is damaged beyond repair (if it isn’t already). 5 Quote

If you watched the " Highlights " video somebody put on here when we were talking about signing him that's all I could see. He was picking the ball up wide and running in field. There didn't seem to be much end product. He wasn't particularly quick or strong. He wasn't looking to get a shot away once he'd opened up the defence. The wasn't much penalty box action and certainly no 6 yard box action. You couldn't judge his heading ability because he never headed the ball ! I thought was amazing for such a tall guy. He didn't seem to be aggressive or relish physical contact. In fact there was nothing on that film that would have induced me to pay much more than about £500k for him. And that was his highlights FFS . I got shouted down by plenty on here for saying these things at the time but the same people are very quiet now. I could have put a short video together of Samuel last season that would have made in look 10 times the player Bretherton is and we know how good Samuel really is. Quote
OldEwoodBlue Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 He was very easily knocked off the ball every time he got it, which gave away possession. Just seems very weak to me. And he isn't the type of player who can receive hoofball. And he isn't a winger Why did we buy this lad ? Not to mention the fee. Quote

Hasta Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 (edited) I do really feel sorry for the kid now. It seems the case for the defence has rested looking at this thread. He looked a different player against Boro yesterday than he did in midweek at Reading but I think that was purely because Reading gave him time and allowed him to start running at them. On form, he shouldn't be anywhere near starting for the first team. He should have gone U23's when he first joined and worked his way through. Putting him in there now will probably break the lad and from next season onwards he'll have been here 12 months so he should be making an impact. Edited February 18, 2019 by Hasta Quote

Bigdoggsteel Posted February 18, 2019 Posted February 18, 2019 Think we would have been better off spending 4 million on John Egan and pairing him with Lenihan. 2 physical center halves who are relatively young. Quote

No one seemed to imply they had lost a gem or real talent which again draws attention to the astronomical fee. Also there seems to be question marks over his attitude. Again doesn't mirror Tony's philosophy of hard working humble men....buts this is rovers. More questions raised than answers. This transfer goes against everything Tony has said.
