However, i can tell you that BB in his present form would also have made either the 2010 or 2014 chilean team or the 2015 or 2016 Copa América winning teams. He is not a bad player and those decent Chile teams didnt have a deep bench and was always missing a central striker. Quote

If it was up to the players & many fans, this tournament would have been cancelled. 2 Quote

Popular Post SBlue Posted June 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2021 I fucking love this lad. Always have and always will. He’s a walking meme but underneath it all he’s properly good at football. Just LOOK at the PURE JOY on his face. Warms the heart. 14 Quote
TheRoversReturn Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Wonderful story. Barely 22 years old and scoring the winner in the Copa America while playing for Rovers. There's a player in there...it's taking a while to come out, but it's happening. Chile's own Big Ben! 3 Quote
LordBaltimore Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) Chilean humor. Shell of your mother= Concha de tu madre (you mother's c*nt). It's a common expletive, like yelling "f*ck!". And since Brereton can't speak Spanish, he'd have to yell it in English.... Edited June 19, 2021 by LordBaltimore Quote
Popular Post LordBaltimore Posted June 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) Chilean social media, press, and general public are abuzz about Ben Brereton. There seems to be little consensus as to how to say his surname and there are at least 10 different pronounciations. As the Chilean announcer celebrated his goal he said about BB, "A dream come true for the 22 year old kid, who travelled alone, with only a dream and a passport, without knowing a word of Spanish, and winning everyone's hearts, scoring like one the greats!" He seems to be a breath of fresh air for the team. People were moved by the genuine joy and emotion he showed while celebrating his first goal for Chile. You can tell he really felt it. And it was a good goal to boot. There was a heap of criticism towards BB's accompanying forwards, Vargas and Meneses, for not passing enough to BB at times, and for trying to showboat and doing it alone too often. At the same time, everyone is still trying to get a feel for Brereton and it is not easy for players who play almost by heart (by memory--since they've been playing together for years) to introduce a dynamic new element as BB has proven himself to be in just two games and one start. BB will become more assertive as he gets to know his team mates and learns more chilean spanish (they say he is making a serious attempt at learning the language through books, lessons, and family now). Popular Post PotterLog Posted June 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2021 Hello all. Thought I'd register on here tonight as I'm a Stoke fan living in Chile for the past 15 years, following the local football all that time through thick and thin, completely bewildered by the fact that a kid who grew up about 3 miles from me in Stoke-on-Trent is now playing and scoring for the national team and is a complete fucking sensation on Chilean social media. Absolutely bizarre. Genuinely a bit emotional about him scoring earlier for some weird reason. I've got Chilean friends, neighbours, acquaintances here sending me memes and articles about him all over the place. There was a short documentary piece about him on one of the major news channels the other night. What a story. Good lad Ben. Let's see how he gets on in the rest of the tourny. It's certainly added a bit of interest in these parts. Anyway, hello. 😉 31 Quote
bboy Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 At least if Adam goes we've got Ben to stick around and build the team round. *Looks at how long BB has left on his contact* 😶 2 Quote

I'm new here. i'm a chilean from the US who has been following your boy Benjamín Bréreton recently. he has generated a lot of buzz in chile, which from reading this thread comes as a surprise for many BRFC fans . having nationalized players or players with only tenuous cultural ties (beyond any bureaucratic citizinship rights) is not unknown for many national teams and chile is not alone in this (there was a half chilean half swede bench warmer during the last cycle). he does not speak a word of spanish and the only spanish song he knows is "feliz navidad" (and probably not very well). that said, welcome to chile, ben! chile does not have many promising young players so as some have suspected, the recruitment of BB is a bit of chile scraping the bottom of the barrel. i am optimistic that he weill do well on the team. Chileans are not tall and BB is a giant among dwarves (i am 5f 7in, like Alexis or Chile's central defender and former Cardiff man Gary Medel). He shows promise in playing in the center. I think he has been mismanaged at Rovers and he will benefit from training with south americans and a different footballing language (and i don't mean english to spanish here). Ben Bréreton is slated to start tonight vs Bolivia, immediately following the England-Scotland game. This is his big chance to make an impression against a covid-depleted Bolivia team, that chile tied 1-1 against at home just 2wks ago. I hope he does well. I love how the accents over the I in Benjamin and E in Brereton have appeared. He is a proper Chilean now. Me gusta Ben Grande. Quote
Popular Post TheRoversReturn Posted June 19, 2021 Popular Post Posted June 19, 2021 After a terrible second half to the season, with: a collapse in league form, another serious Dack injury and Mowbray somehow staying as boss, this has been a heartwarming story just when it was needed. It's all absolutely bloody bonkers. Surreal yet lovely at the same time. Don't know whether to smile or pinch myself to try and get back to reality! Thanks for the information LordBaltimore and PotterLog. BB smashing one in at the Copa America. LOL!!! 10 Quote
G Somerset Rover Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 Brereton nearly has half a million Instagram followers - 4 times as many as the official Rovers account. Mowbray won’t like that. Vamos Big Ben 4 Quote
