Mark Atkins on Radio Lancs was cutting - ‘out of his depth, making basic errors that tells me he isn’t ready for this level’

The way I look at it is this. If he was our own 19 year old academy lad, what would we be saying? ‘Raw, not ready, needs more time with U23s or a loan out’.

So, just because he’s got a price tag shouldn’t make a difference- currently he is nowhere near ready for the first team and needs taking out the firing line immediately for the good of the team and the lad himself, because today was painful for all concerned.

If Samuel was fit he'd be starting out there as well !  It's pathetic really it's creating a problem when there needn't be one, we moaned about Bowyer at times playing square pegs in round holes but I don't remember him playing strikers on the wings every week !

No, bowyer played central midfielders on the wing instead. Cairney was always played out wide and because of that I thought he was crap, then he went to Fulham and played central midfield and I thought wow what a player we had. Another season at rovers probably would have ruined him, same will happen with brereton.

Very true but as wrong as it seemed they being actual midfielders did contribute at times but it's nonsense now and leaves the team with no balance when strikers play there. Like a lot of other things we got away with it a league below.

I've exercised patience and given the lad the benefit of doubt up until now, excusing him because of lack of game time and being played out of position when he does get on.

But jesus wept, out of position or not, he should still demonstrate something to warrant his 'potential' tag: today was abysmal. It doesn't look right to me and increasingly looks like a Balaji punt over Mowbray's head. If Mowbray sees in training all week what we have seen in cameos, it's no wonder he's not bloody starting.

Let's hope it's an option to purchase in January and not a done deal.

Come on guys. Lay off him, give him a chance, he's only young as an investment he's worth every penny of our transfer budget.

Brown made 20 appearances and didn't get a goal - and he was revered as some sort of God on here.

Or did I just make that up?

This transfer appears dodgier by the day. Was he signed off some kind of video game appearance? Did the loons not know the difference between real life and the amazing graphics on 2018's consoles?

He makes Paul McKinnon look like Shearer. Dreadful performance today but as others have said he's not a winger, just like AA is not a winger, and just like Sam Gally is not a winger but will play there when he signs.

Mowbray is 'tactically astute' though so who are we argue.

£7m FFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mowbray is the only manager I have heard talk about 'wide strikers', it's like a description he has invented to justify playing players out of position. Both Armstrong and Brereton fall into this category and while the former look ok in patches the latter has generally been abysmal. Mowbray is far too clever at times and on this occasion he needs to swallow his pride to possibly prevent spoiling a young players career.

But it does make a difference. The price tag makes it necessary to make it successful and reduces the time that a player has before they will be judged. If he wasn’t ready or didn’t fit into Mowbray’s system then it was very poor scouting indeed.

Right now, Nuttall should be on the first team bench ahead of Brereton but how embarrassing would that be for Mowbray?

We should never have committed that much money - even if it was some kind of use it or lose it scenario. Half of that cash would have gone a long way in January to improve where we have issues. This signing has huge question marks over it.

Mowbray thinks every player can play in every  position. I think this is a bit of an old fashioned view. Players specialise now more than they ever had. I just find it odd, especially as he expects the "wingers" to do so much defending. Just bloody play wingers then, not strikers.

Players like Dack don't come along very often. I am fearful we are wasting having him there due to this nonsense of not supporting him with proper wingers.

Anyway, on Brereton, the young lads confidence looks shot. Probably becuase he is being brought on out of position for 10 minutes a game.  I don't blame him.

IM GOING TO USE CAPITALS FOR THIS

WHY DIDNT WE SPEND 7 MILLION ON A WINGER INSTEAD OF SPENDING 7 MILLION ON A STRIKER TO PLAY THERE, BADLY???

It's becoming more bizarre by the week

Fans will be blaming fans for this before long you can see it coming, the excuse book will be being written as we speak so I agree it's time to leave him out for a bit but I fear he's on every week to be justified in some way.

Already some slightly  heated conversations on twitter.

Can anybody remember when TM said something like he had to reel the owners in from splashing the cash, was it prior or after the Brererton signing?

Just thinking aloud, A owner with cash to burn buoyed by their first successful season in 8 years, a manager who has seemingly turned a 750,000 player into a 10/15 million one , an agent with the go ahead to find a buyer for a player with the gift of the gab about future profits . A set of officials from a club that wouldnt want to upset the owner and told to get the deal done ,

Would the owner be tempted to purchase to pass on to the manager to work his apparent magic again?

Yes I know pure speculation and a rabbit hole that we don't want to go down again :)

As it stands, I would say Sam Gallagher is far more effective player

I can remember him saying he had to dampen their expectations re promotion. He may have also said it about spending money. He definitely said after we signed BB that as the money was there he may as well spend it.

Personally I think he had a very good budget and was expected to spend it but couldn't attract the likes of Celina and Freeman. BB was therefore a panic buy IMO. It was very last minute.

I'll say it now that Brereton would have looked just as effective as Gallagher was when that dingle tosser managed us last time we were in the championship. Why?

He'd play every minute of every game.

Wouldn't be dropped at all

Would just play with a freedom to get on with it.

Now I'm not saying bring the dope back but. I am saying both Gallagher and Brereton are at a very similar level in terms of ability and style of player.

Celina and Freeman either side of Dack. Oh, don't do that to me

Sounds a bit like Nolan at Notts County last season. Team then went from comfortably in the top 2 to struggling into the play-offs. Psychological over-achievers.

The other danger with Mowbray sticking with the old guard is that it doesn’t give a lot of confidence to any potential targets in January - or even the Summer.

On the one hand he could be saying to every prospective player “you have to earn your place” - and I’m doing so put off any prima donnas in the making - but on the other it could look like he has his favourites. He should have upgraded on Smallwood by now but continues to pick him and even rewarded him with a new contract in the Summer.

Rovers even published recently: “Tony Mowbray says Richie Smallwood remains a key cog in the Rovers machine, and adds that he doubts many have the same determination as the number six.”

https://www.rovers.co.uk/news/2018/october/richie-brings-the-soul-to-our-team/

If Mowbray continues to build teams around League One standard players then the inevitable will eventually happen.

Yes it makes a difference to how bad a signing this is looking. Like Kevin Davies before him. Chris Brown was shite, but he was free, a squad man and you can kind of look back and laugh. Davies was brought in to be the talisman and was a disaster for the club.

But it doesn’t change the fact a 19 year old isn’t anywhere near good enough for the side and needs to be away from the first team squad for the foreseeable.

Don’t disagree. But that will take some serious swallowing of pride by Mowbray and he does seem to be a very stubborn bloke who will stick to his guns no matter what.

I wonder if he will pick Evans and Smallwood again in the centre for the next game. I suspect he will.
