Armstrongs goal to get us back in the game today was admitted to be a fluke just as Ipswichs goal was. Weve also scored fortunately direct from a corner and got away with a blatant penalty shout for Villa. I do think we have a point today but we get some luck ourselves lets not forget. Quote

But today they got 2 very soft penalties. The ref against Villa had a soft spot for the poor man Bradley Dack Jack Grealish. He got everything. Under-achieving teams always blame the referee when they ought to be looking at themselves to their own failings. Referees don't win matches but good footballs teams do. We're doing okay but it could be so much better. 4 drawn games at home out of 5 is too many Quote

Tugay's Right Foot Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Teams will begin to take notice of us and our players like Dack. Need more consistent stepped up performances. Reed should be a starter, Hope we can make the move permanent. So impressive when he has played. And what about Davenport? When can we see him play? He was impressive at Burton like Reed? our defence seems to be the soft spot and should target a nasty bugger in Jan. Quote
donnermeat Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Before their second I felt Armstrong wimped out of chasing the ball with the keeper, he should have carried on and knocked it past the him instead of pulling up and letting the keeper take it. 2 minutes later they equalise. And Lenihan needs a word, that's three penalties conceded in his last three games. I don't know what he was thinking, a blatant shirt pull today, terrible. I like Lenihan but he needs an organiser playing alongside him at this stage, Downing certainly isn't that. After some of the yellow bellied performances in the last 8 years or so, it's really enjoyable to watch this team though. 1 Quote
Backroom Tom Posted September 30, 2018 Backroom Posted September 30, 2018 (edited) Yep if Armstrong was brave he could have lifted it over the keeper or knocked it around him for a nailed on penalty but he backed out What was slightly disappointing for me was that they equalised with a good ten minutes left then we were hanging on a bit, we didn’t threaten once after the goal. tonyoz Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 (edited) I agree with TM, Groundhog Day! (Love that film). shaky start Lenihan gives away a penalty opposition miss.....lucky break Eventually we get on top......lots of neat football Dack scores we lead.........commentator talking about double promotion.......nothing to fear in this league. Opposition equalises last 10 minutes it’s another classic film.....”The Alamo” Raya pulls off a worldie in extra time. whistle blows and we all curse the ref. I'm coming to the conclusion that Lenihan is one of those centre backs who is only ever as good as the partner he's playing alongside. I know he's ours and he came through the ranks and all that but I don't personally ever see him as being good enough for the premier league. Championship is probably his level (and there's further work to do before that's a given...) Quote
Mattyblue Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 (edited) At the end of the day Lenihan’s a converted midfielder. A rash tackle in the centre of the pitch is usually less risky, indeed it can actually help to stem the flow of the opposition. At centre half it can lead to cards, penalties and goals against. With Wembley being sold and 600 mil pounds should be invest in better football factilities around the country, helping smaller clubs with youth academies and improving refs standards and recruiting more. These goals havent come from us being cutting open by the opposite team but from a fluke, a bad wall and ref giving bad penalties decisions. Edited September 30, 2018 by chaddyrovers Quote
Bigdoggsteel Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 Lenihan is a good defender and I think he could play on the premiership some day, but he needs Mulgrew beside him right now. Williams and Downing are poor replacements in many, many ways for Mulgrew. Leadership, talking, reading the game, these are Mulgrew defensive strenghts. All this things seem to allow Lenihan to focus on his game better. Williams did OK there in fairness, better option than Downing. There is obviously a reason why Mowbray had pretty much frozen Downing out til yesterday. I am pretty sure he has never played in the championship. To be honest any of Lenihan, Williams or Downing would benefit from having Mulgrew beside them. Hopefully this injury is a one off and he gets back to his fitness of last season Quote

He has the ability and qualities to become a good Cb but these rash decisions of his need cutting out. We cannot keep giving sloppy penalties away - though he has been fortunate that two have been missed. I think Rodwell has shown enough to be backup CB now. 1 Quote

Reeds position is a dcm, he certainly isnt a right sided midfielder. No matter what the manager just seems to want to play players on the wing, who aren't wingers, samuel, armstrong, Reed, brereton, antonson etc. Bennett works hard, very energetic, but creates next to nothing most games playing on the wing. Everything we do goes through the middle, if we had two natural wingers who were able to run with and cross the ball then we might be able to stop worrying about the opposition so much. Basically yesterday we had 4 defenders, and then two defensive wingers on the pitch as well as two playing in cdm. So 8 of the 10 outfield players were defensive minded players, granted evans and Reed got further forward occasionally. 1 Quote
ChrisyG Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 If we had 2 decent centre halves we would have won that game. We really missed Mulgrew to calm the back four and also his distribution. Downing is a solid league one player but not good enough at this level. I thought the ref was very poor and it was ages before he booked their no6 for constantly fouling Dack. Also, it didn’t look like a corner for their 1st pen and the second pen was a dive. Plus points; Armstrong did well when he came on and Rodwell looked ok (better than downing!). Evans and Smallwood looked good. Graham was class all game! We’ve got the makings of a decent side. I also had both teams to score :O Quote

Which team plays with wingers these days? it's not 1995 you know. TM sets us up quite narrow and compact and overall I'd say we were the better team against a Forest side who've spent big money. The modern way seems to be fullbacks bombing forward and that's what we should be doing. Edited September 30, 2018 by ChrisyG 2 Quote

Barring the dubious penalty, we win the game and there is no issue about 8 "defensive" players playing Quote

Did Raya even made a save 1st half? Both teams 17 shots at goal. Rovers had 9 on target aswell. Edited September 30, 2018 by chaddyrovers 1 Quote

We can compete alright. I feel like @jim mk2 made a very valid point, but I knew that the phrase "under-acheving" which I agree was harsh would make the whole opinion very unpopular. Our ability to compete at this level is clear, but jim also said "We're doing okay but it could be so much better" which is absolutely spot on. We are mid table but we could easily be in the play off places, had we not developed an achilles heel for giving away late goals, silly penalties and struggling to turn draws into wins at the point of creating plenty of chances in games. This doesnt mean that we are doing rubbish and need major changes, so much is right with the team at the moment, but it doesnt mean that we should ignore when something blatantly is causing us a problem. He also mentioned that we should be looking at what we are doing to rectify these points being lost rather than writing it all off solely onto referees, as seems to be the most popular and convenient method. Yes they are poor but for all of @chaddyrovers ideas about spending multi millions on them, they arent going to change any time soon. Lets look at both what we are doing well, ie plenty, and also what we can do to do even better, and try to knock the conspiracy that our main downfall is referees always being against us on the head. 1 hour ago, ChrisyG said: I agree Reed isn't a RM but I don't understand the obsession with wingers. The modern way seems to be fullbacks bombing forward and that's what we should be doing. Its a popular myth that wingers have no place in the modern game. Yesterday, we faced Lolley and Cash who gave our full backs a hard time, and they also brought Dias on, another winger. In recent times, we have played Stoke who had Tom Ince who scored, Derby have Jozefzoon and Harry Wilson, 2 very effective wingers at this level, and Gwion Edwards of Ipswich and Eliasson at Bristol City are 2 wingers that have caused us major problems this season already. I have provided a list of wingers in the Championship a few weeks a go and it was a very long list. Even if a wingers role is not necessarily to float crosses in to 2 target men, and whether the winger is on his weak or strong foot, a good winger has as much of a role to play now as they ever have. Quote
bluebruce Posted September 30, 2018 Posted September 30, 2018 It's one thing, anyway, to say wingers are dead (don't buy it but hey). It's another thing to perpetually play people there who were never brought up to play in that whole area of the pitch. If you don't want the blood and thunder winger style fine, but you at least get specialists at whatever you DO want to play there. 2 Quote
